Bears In the Pressure Cooker

Species fall to extinction every week Of natural selection, scientists speak But habitat destruction is caused by man Who neglects to take an environmental stand Ozone depletes as gas poisons the air And death watch begins for the polar bear Fluffy, white creatures who romp in the snow Thrive in temperatures of fifty below Earth’s Arctic playground is disappearing Glaciers and tundra are quickly clearing Revealing the woolly mammoth’s remains Sad echoes from the last Ice Age retained Since 2004 the Pole cap has depleted Half the Arctic ice to sea has retreated Glacial thickness shrinks a half foot each year As mother bears nuzzle their cubs in fear Preservation efforts now underway But where will the rescued polar bears stay If climate changes prevent the North Pole From shifting to a site that’s polar-bear cold Just twenty to twenty-five thousand remain Perched on floating icebergs, moaning sad refrains In fewer than fifty years all may be gone Perhaps only in children’s books they’ll live on * For Amy's "Ode to the Endangered" challenge

Sadly, extinction occurs for one reason or another. This is a wonderful poem about a beautiful creature. God be with them...and us. Love, Dane Ann

This I chose for vivid description, TRUTH and an excellent form. Believe it or not, people think the endangerment of polar bears is a hoax... WHAT????? You did an excellent job. Thank you an congrats.

What a great write about a most endangered animal. Too sad that we don't recognize the devastation and havoc we reap on our world. Perhaps, if we get more poems like this out, people will start to wake up! Dan C

This is a beautiful poem and it is so sad to think these beautiful animals might cease to exist. An yet there people with their heads in the sand that say global warming is a big lie. Thank you for your comments on my "American Painting. Love, Joyce

It's very very sad about them, Carolyn. Poor things struggling on the floating remains of icebergs. I think you should do well with this one. I hope I can find one to write about too. yes, I decided to take the less sensual way with my memory of love. I hope it works for me. haha. I had a really hot one planned (I think Constance likes them that way) but I chickened out becuase it was pure fiction!! Luv, Andrea

excellent write and I guess we all take our turn going the way of the dinosaur? Thanks for my win in your limerick contest. (Did you know you can make nice fitted bodice patterns by strapping yourself up in duct tape and [over an old t shirt] and then you cut it off and use it as a pattern!) light & Love

I've noted all the documentation you mention to be true, Carolyn. Congratulations again on a nice contest. Thanks also for your comment on my latet bolg. I just hope people have enought gumption to at least acknowledge the doorway. For I fear most people will be camped outside by the roots of the tree, rather than inside the city. Agape, Moses

This is excellent, you really drive home the sad plight of the polar bear. That last line is particularly effective. Good luck in the contest.

Such an informative poem, dear Carolyn--I sure learned a lot from your write and it's really so sad how so few are left but I am still hoping that something can be done to actually help the polar bears...I really do think that this will do well in Amy's contest :)

You really expressed the problem nicely, Carolyn. Mybe the only chance for ppolar bears to survive would be to shift them to Antarcica where the ice shield is still ok. So many species are endangered it is a tragedy and what environmental damage cannot provide, will be finalized by poachrs!!! Well written with a serious background. Thank you for your kind comments and have a great week...Love, Gert
