Bankrupt
I knew a panhandler with a pocked face,
a poor man; he was in a hurting place.
Living in shadows, he hid in plain sight
and begged for change on the streets each night.
He'd often share what little food he had
for the plight of others made him feel sad.
And so, there is no question in my mind
that this man was both generous and kind.
One day a crazed drunk was wielding a knife
and forfeiting his; that man saved a life.
He had pushed a toddler out of the way,
and his soul went straight to heaven that day.
A homeless man with nothing but his dreams
and a kind heart wasn't morally bankrupt, it seems.
For though he had only his life to give,
he gave it up so that a child could live.
