Bah-Humbug

Ah yes, the joys of Christmas
Excuse me if, I seem a little listless
Just thinking about, all of the work
Turns my smile into a smirk

Carrying boxes, moving things around
That fake tree weighs a hundred pounds
Untangling lights, that came unwound
The headache caused is quite profound

Assemble the tree. What fun! I guess?
Unwrapping ornaments, damn what a mess
Decorate the tree, well, more or less
Did you know popping bubble wrap relieves your stress?

After all of that, it's on to the shopping
Gotta have something to put in your stocking
Unruly children, screaming and flopping
Looks like Christmas cheer, went island hopping

Then family time, so short and sweet
Cooking the food, for all to eat
The hugs, the smiles, the tears we weep
Don't wake me up, if I fall asleep

Finally it's over, do it all in reverse
Put everything back, while you swear and curse
I can't make up my mind, which is worse
The work or the crowds, I need a nurse

So I won't be sending Christmas cards this year
No buying gifts or decorating, let me be clear
I say, "Bah-Humbug", let the ghosts appear
To hell with all of this fake Christmas cheer!

I'm going to bed with a big smile on my face, the result of reading your hilarious, masterfully composed take-down of Christmas. Sheer genius on display! Thank you, and thanks for your kind words about "Hometown."

Oh, Daniel - we great minds lay in the same gutter. You must read my, "Pinch of Grinch" - I promise it will keep you good company although it is Feb. So you returned in Dec. when I been back for a bit. Hmm, I see. Yepper doddle. I see. This is a great kick of a fun poem, I wholeheartedly embrace it, but you? I dunno. All the best, brat ... CayCay

Hi Danny...I have just noticed that you posted this poem after a noticeable break. This poem delivers several messages for those who are ready to look for them! Christmas has become too commercialized and its true meaning has been camouflaged by other interests. Luckily my young granddaughter helps to keep alive the true spirit of this special occasion. Best seasonal wishes to you! Regards // paul

I can certainly relate to your poem Daniel. The older I get the more dragging all the Christmas gear out seems more like a chore. When you have a little one that delights so in the decorations how can I not do it. I hope that you are having a much better Christmas than what is depicted in your poem. Have a wonderful holiday my friend. Blessings, Connie

You wrote with finesse, dear. My favorite line was "Looks like Christmas cheer, went island hopping". I have no patience for it all, I must admit, so I can totally relate to this poem. I haven't seen you on my page for a while. I hope all is well, dear.

You're back, DT, and what a poem! I'm glad I stopped by, you've cheered me up truly:) you're right, we can do away with all such decorative nonsense and spread true cheer around and the real message of Christmas:)

I found you, I didn't like it when lost is how you seemed, especially when I'd been gone so long. I've missed you and could easily fill many of these rectangles just chatting you up or telling you all the ways I related to your poem, found my own thoughts in each line. Seems we have Christmas every other week. You, in a very real sense, inspired my 'Stillness of Missing". I thought about how poets I've grown to care about are here even when they're gone. Talk you to me. HUGS ... CayCay
