Notes About The Poem

Written Feb 24, 2026 entered in contest

At the Funny Farm

There’re many names for this place
Where sanity slips takes a break
Sometimes called the nut house
You can hear the squirrels shout

The funny farm I’d rather say
For someone laughs in the day
Even if it’s no joke to be there
There’s always a person who stares

Some are nice some are kind
Some mean drugged out of mind
A hospital to save you from self
Empower better mental health

Even then wrote poems in my head
Didn’t share as ambition was dead
Decided to stop talking to voices
Gave the muse all of my choices

“How did you sleep last night”
Like a rock but frozen in time
Always cold in that sterile place
Made it out by amazing grace

Looking back in the reflection glass is painful yet empowering and the reasons I pick this moment is the same. Being broken inside was very hard and I felt helpless and hopeless. It took time for despair to peel away like an onion. I recall being strapped to a bed and not caring refusing food or liquids so I was fed intravenously. Eventually I found the will to live after I had tried to take my life. I lost vision of what made me so ill I only knew that I at one time wanted to die. I almost did as I was in I.C.U. and intubated for weeks in a coma. God refused me in heaven so back to my body I went. The hardest line to write was decided to stop talking to voices because I really was tormented so horribly that I stopped talking at all for a while. I had a chemical imbalance and I knew it! It’s much kinder to be oblivious to madness. I removed from the first draft the free write style which was dry and full of despair.

Hey I am back here for at least a third time to congratulate you on your win . We both made it on the winner list of around 30 out of 100 entries! Hurrah! Mine was for funny poem. What category was yours meant for? Yours is a sobering topic but I also love its humorous tone.

Looks like I saw your winning poem already. I remember it now. I am really curious about when you said God refused you and back to your body you went. Were you able to have a near death experience? I am really fascinated by such things! Big congrats on your win here

Thanks Andrea. I lost memory of my icu weeks. But I do recall waking up to a praying mother who was reading to me refusing to let me “follow the light”. You see the doctors didn’t know if I would wake up. I didn’t for weeks. My head had swollen the size of a tv and of course I had to learn how to walk again. So I know God intervened I just don’t remember it. My aunt had a near death experience and she remembered it.

This has moved me to tears. Dear Karen, l can understand the agony you must have been going through during your hospitalisation and the day prior to that when you decided to end everything. God has been kind and you have sprung back to a life of creativity. Keep up your spirits and never take a defeatist turn in life. Congratulations on your win.

I’m sorry it made you sad. I’m better but had to write from the truth which is an ugly thing.

Thank you dear Valsa. I understand my illness and the motivation to end my life was a symptom rooted in a chemical imbalance. I’m glad God intervened and I’ll never do that again. I take my tiny little happy pill lol! And my therapist gets to read my poetry lol! (I overshare)

Beautifully written with humour & charm, Karen. I love that you’ve used rhyme for this articulation. ThkU for the notes too. Well done for releasing yourself from the Funny Farm. Chemical imbalance is becoming more prevalent as modern society goes through its current turmoil so I’m happy that you highlight it with this gem. Congrats on a well deserved placement. Great Love your way for your strength.

You were brave to lay it all out this way. I can't even imagine this sort of suffering. My dad was schizophrenic but my own pain always takes physical form and rarely emotional. Very well written, dear.

How resilient you must be as the daughter of a man with challenges in mental health. Yes I don’t often dive so deep but I didn’t have anything else to say that was and is my truth. Thanks for reading.

So well written! You handled the subject with a little humor and grace. I’ve known of some that have been in the same place. The funny farm, so called. Yes, chemical imbalance can play a good deal into it. You put yourself out there. This will speak to many.

I know this is too personal but unfortunately it’s my truth. For whatever reason God wasn’t ready for me to quit so maybe there’s a reason a bigger plan for my life. Yes I’m foolishly putting myself out there. Hoping I don’t regret it lol! Thanks for reading your support is encouraging and inspiring.
