At The Fair

The band plays joyously,
The fun fair is in full swing.
We walk along the promenade,
Stopping every few footsteps
To hail old friends and make some new.
Then from across the street
She sees a lifelong friend
She crosses quickly, unaware
That someone mad is driving
His newly bought Chevrolet.
The screech of tyres shattering the joy of the fair.
The immortal scythe descended
And death claimed its mortal dues.
I stand, dumbfounded, eyes filled with tears.

Two contrasting images of joy and sadness ... the sweet & bitter taste of life ably projected, Victor. ~ Best regards / paul

The happy mood of this poem, which is interrupted by sudden tragedy, portrays the way death comes sometimes-without a warning! A gripping tale, masterfully written. :)

Tragedy, a poets nightmare, at times a poets dream, today it was ominous not at all what the joyful day should've been. Great written~

A tragic ending in this one and joy ended that day at the fair. Death just comes and we can never know when. Good one, Victor

A very impactful work you have penned in this one and this has happened in several marketplaces in our country in the last few years and even cars crashing into restaurants and stores. I hope it is just a work and not someone close in your life. Thank you for sharing this one with us. Sara K

Yep, I lost a loved one in a tragic accident. One never forgets. Life is precious...and can be taken away in an unexplained heartbeat.

Victor, this is an incredible poem. The contrast between the festive atmosphere and the sudden, tragic ending has a powerful impact on the reader.

Wow, Victor ! What a write. “Dumbfounded” in your final line describes it all. As wisdom goes, our soul chooses when it wants to be released from body. Good movement in the poem, though title does not capture full story. Have a blessed week, Vics. Sending light.

Such a sad write…one moment delighted, fun-filled, then heart breaks in two…memories made, suddenly it’s a lifelong tragedy.

This is a common occurrence when each motorist races past, not caring for the safety of people. Such accidents destroy families and social gatherings. You handle every topic with innate ease.

This began so joyously, our county fair ended just one week ago, and we were there almost every day and saw many dear friends there. The shock at the end made me wince with the tragic ending. So sad. I was almost hit by a car a few years ago as we were on a vacation in Utah, if my husband hadn't stopped me just in the nick of time when a speeding vehicle came around the corner, I would have been hit for sure. It had the same feel, we were so excited to be there, nothing but joy was on my mind!

This is so sad dear victor, made me really sad and it really is so vividly described that i think any reader would see through your imagery and storytelling! Youv once again proved yourself as one of the finest storytellers ever! So seamless! So many incidents like this, its unfortunate some are behind wheels, where they shouldnt be. Pleasure reading you today. Sending you light always
