       Navajo Madonna                          Dead Cottonwood                          

Art - Olaf Wieghorst

Native Indians,
   Wild horses on gold prairies,
      Sprawled desert landscapes:
The "Dean of Western Painters,"
Olaf Wieghorst captured them.

Mystical beauty
    Springs forth on sunny highlights
      Splashed gainst the dark earth.
Grand images of nature
Come to life with each brush stroke.

Rugged western scenes
  Filled with life and earth's splendor
      Stir deep emotion.
Favored most: "Dead Cottonwood,"
And "Navajo Madonna."

I have always been drawn to Wieghorst's colorful and masterful western scapes, (Remington, too), especially his grasp of light and shadow - the long shadows of the plains and refracted light of the spacious skies.
