Quite interesting, Jeff...not only the form but the content. So, what is "parity?" Should anyone be given a "leg up" because they "deserve" it? Hmm...good topic for debate. I have yet to see "equal opportunity" (although I believe in it) play out in reality. I like to think of it like handicaps in golf. Fact is, those with high handicaps are generally lousy golfers. Unfortunately we still live in a "it's who you know" world. Get my drift?

But, no one got my thumb on their scales! Ah, some tried hard to gain unfair advantages, but it rarely worked with me. I was usually able to spot these characters, although I will admit, some of them were quite clever.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm surprised administration didn't come down on this...and, perhaps, they did! She used an unethical method to achieve glory for herself, in my humble opinion. On the first day of classes, I would tell students you are all starting at ground zero with me, but you have an opportunity to move upward. If you have what it takes you can move all the way to the top of the class. It's all up to you and your abilities; I had no way to measure potential at this point.

I'd have been OK with equality of entry if she had maintained the original high standard. But she tried to make it so that everyone could get a good grade, whether they knew the material or not, and that is the problem with equity - it drags everyone down to the lowest common denominator. And athletic and academic abilities are NOT the same for everyone, no matter how much folks scream about it.

I was in a 300 level Chemistry class which had a requirement of 3 semesters of Calculus for entry. A new professor arrived; she wanted to be "liked", and waved the requirement. The whole class suffered because we were constantly dragged back to Cal 1 and Cal 2-related issues. Equality is: let anyone enter the class. Equity is: give everyone who takes the class an A regardless of what proficiency they have.
