- An Old Coin -

I have an old box
in that box, I have
collected many "treasures"
Not treasures of great value
but small memories of time
that has passed

This box is like a "scrapbook"
that makes me so happy
Look...look what I found today:
an old coin that is
marked by time

The coin is brown, a little thick
and need to be cleaned
The coin has a crown on
the one hand, value built
and the year standing
on the other side:
5 - cent from 1912

Such a coin from 1912
was probably a great wealth
It was probably not from
a "poor man`s" pocket

The coin has been owned
by many over the years
It has paid for food for
hungry bodies
Flour, sugar, bread, milk,
potatoes, onions and carrots
Perhaps the wool to knit socks

As the coin got older
it has lost its value
But for a child it was a big deal
You could buy both candy
and caramels
Maybe, it was put in
your "piggy bank"
Yes, what a story....
This little coin has,
traveled for many years

Anne Lise: This is a great Story/poem about a coin. If you still have the coin, It might be worth a lot of money by now. I once had a gold coin from 1914, it it was stolen. Thanks for sharing this with us. God bless. Lucilla

I bought an old penny for $90 a number of years ago. It has a Native American on its face as opposeed to current U.S. pennies which have Abe Lincoln on the face. Nice poem! Peace & Love Matthew Anish

I liked this. I used to save a coin or two from each country I visited and like your poem I used to wonder about its travels and the lives it touched.

Hello Norway. I have been reading a number of your poems and I like this one. It is difficult to hold on to things from our childhood, but this little coin has done the trick. Excellent write and subject matter.
