Onomatopoeia is the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named, and we can almost hear those sounds as we read.
As an ancient oak creaks and groans,
wailing winds rattle its branches.
And the pitter-patter of drops
starts drumming on patio stones.
Raindrops morph into sleet and hail
as an ancient oak creaks and groans.
And its twigs snap like brittle bones
when howling gusts stir up a gale.
Raindrops strike, rat-a-tat-tat in
a cacophony of loud bangs.
As an ancient oak creaks and groans,
rain adds to the chaotic din.
Pelting cracking windows like stones,
hail fractures fragile panes of glass.
And lightning fuels thunderclaps
as an ancient oak creaks and groans.
