My baby turned twenty one today...

In the morning, as I was going to drive her to work..  I reminded her,

'its going to rain, you need a jacket'

I asked why are you going to work, and do your colleagues know it is your birthday?

nonchantly, she replied, she was not really bothered, but then tears rolled down her cheek...

I asked, 'whats wrong, you are an adult today, why the tears?'

as always, not wanting her dad to worry.. she said 'nothing, just a bit sensitive'

I tried to make her laugh and managed a smile from her..

But, remained sad, that my baby cried on her special day..

A gardener was gifted a seedling. Before planting its teeny weeny stem, he gently prepared the earth, carefully, vigilantly, so it was soft, but tough enough to hold its roots. Everyday, affectionately he would provide it with water, especially when the sunlight was too strong. At times he would place an umbrella over the top, so the stalk would not become dry. When the winds would blow with force and the sapling would shiver and shake, the gardener would place a solid support against its trunk, so it could lean on it during the storms and when the puddles were too deep, the gardener would wipe them away and make sure it wasn't affected by the moisture. Slowly, as the gardener nourished the young tree, its roots spread deeper into the ground and gradually it began to reach out its elegant branches. Before long, verdant leaves spread, all glossy with their satin sheen sparkling in the sun. When callous, colder days arrived and leaves began to wither, like sorrows the gardener would treat the bark and cleanse away the moss, so no beetles would ruin its skin. When snow angels fell from the sky, he would remove all the snow and build snowmen around its base, so the tree would be jolly on bitter nights. As it grew all high and mighty, its curly brown branches became home to baby birds and hibernating squirrels hiding their nuts. With sincere vigour the tree would protect them from predators... Now the tree was big and strong, so the gardener would sit underneath resting from tiring days sheltering from the rain. After a while the gardener never returned, but the tree kept flourishing, because it had unyielding foundations to battle the elements.

Lovely tribute poem to your daughter Sara, Silent One ... It's always hard to see our child crying, even when it's happy tears. The metaphor of a tree was well chosen. We can only do our best to prepare them for their life and purpose. I just returned today when Poetry Soup unlocked my account. Hope to post, read and comment in the coming weeks. Congratulations on your POTD, my friend. Have a great day! (a month late, but the first chance I've had to comment on it) A poet friend in Texas, Bill

What a beautiful poem you wrote to and for your daughter Silent One - i so enjoyed it ! I hope you are doing well and I did promise to read your poems a couple of days ago but our son is here from Australia. They immigrated there two years ago and don't like it at all and are now immigrating to Ireland, so stopped by South Africa To visit us. Ireland is so much nearer for us to visit one day also I am going to try to definitely be more communicative on soup. Blessings Jennifer.

Dear Silent One, you are such a wonderful father. This is beautiful, tender and inspiring, all at the same time. On 9/5 you posted this saying happy birthday to your daughter. My daughter's birthday is today. 9/6. Her name is Destiny and she is 21 yrs old as well. I feel so blessed, indeed. Your thoughts caress gently around me and my heart. Congratulations my dear friend, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy

Being a sensitive soul can be difficult, but it sounds like you raised her well with a strong foundation. Nice analogy. Thanks for your visit to my page. (I've been in survival mode lately.)

Love the conclusion! Yes, if we give our children the guidance and protection they need, even the humor and entertainment to get through bitter days, they will be strong as their support disappears!

Dear Silent One, First, a huge congratulations on your POTD, which is so well deserved. I loved how your poem illustrates how consistent love, care, and support during formative years enable a child to develop. Parenting is so important in order to become resilient, self-sufficient individual capable of withstanding life's challenges. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel
