Alter Your Course
ALTER YOUR COURSE
The captain steered his vessel through the dark and foggy night,
His eyes scanning the water for danger he might sight.
And as he drifted slowly, he saw not far away
A light shining so brightly it seemed like dawn of day.
He studied it and realized his vessel would collide
If that oncoming vessel would not steer to one side.
And so in desperation, he called out to the source,
“I am a Navy captain, please alter now your course!”
The voice came back to tell him, “You must steer now from me!”
The captain was dumbfounded, and he shouted angrily,
“I have the power to tell you that you must steer away,
Now do not argue with me, or we’ll collide today!”
The voice again responded, “I have respect for you,
But though you have the power, I say this you must do:
Steer now in the direction that turns away from me,
For sir, I man the lighthouse whose light you clearly see.”
The lesson from this story is clear and still is true:
The lighthouse wants to guide us on water deep and blue.
But we in our rebellion oft thing that we know best
And don’t want to obey what the owner might suggest.
The lighthouse, friend, is Jesus, and He shines forth the light
That guides us, if we’ll let it, safe through the darkest night.
No matter how we feel about the way that we should go,
The man who owns the lighthouse the best way always knows.
The true way never changes, so we must change our way
If we would sail safely through fog and dark to day.
