ALEXANDER THE GREAT
Alexander The Great was born in Macedonia in 356 BC, led to believe
From a boy by Olympias his mother, and to conceive
He was born of the gods, legend inferred he was the son of Zeus,
Ruler of the Greek gods whereupon the people did deduce,
That he was a hero, a god somebody remarkable.
In fact, he was a murderer, a conqueror, an egotist, and not humble.
His tutor was Aristotle, who educated him in Philosophy, Culture,
Logic and Music, alert and learned he began to re-structure
His army from Citizens into Warriors, who became ruthless, fought,
Killed and conquered for years to come, Alexander’s bravery,
Became known far and wide, a fierce Warrior, who also knew Archery.
At only 16 he went off into his first battle with the sacred band of Thebes,
He defeated this sacred band in 338 BC with ease,
Determined, and greedy Alexander killed King Phillip, his father.
When she heard of the murder, Alexander’s mother,
Was devastated, but as was custom, his mother handed him the reigns,
Which no one contested , but no one too happy, as nothing was formal,
So Alexander killed all his rivals, now he felt safe.
Together with his beloved horse Bucephalus and Antipar his General,
He set forth to gain an Empire, to rule the world, I will continue his sequel.
He faced Persians and Greeks at Hellespont, victory went to the King
of Macedonia, King Darius of Persia was a coward as will be revealed.
Many battles were fought and won by Alexander the Great.
He now headed for Gordian and the fabled famous Gordian knot.
It was said that whoever undid this knot,
Would Conquer Persia, as Alexander failed, he cut the knot with his sword,
Thus claiming triumph, hence it was
Expected he would win the Battle of Isuss from Darius, which indeed
Happened and King Darius the coward fled, leaving his family and his wife,
To safe his own life.
Darius’s mother was so disgusted, she adopted Alexander.
Alexander forged ahead with his dream to build an empire, his motto
‘There is nothing impossible to him who will try’.
He continued his victorious path through the Phoenician cities and rejected
Darius’s plea for peace, and turned his attention to the Island of Tyre,
With a strong navy he breached the walls of those who defied him,
Killed them by the thousands, heard far and wide was their cry.
Darius once more approached Alexander with an offer of peace, which
Alexander rejected.
Pushing forward yet again, Alexander goes to Egypt, a battle ensued,
Darius again fled, so his troops killed their coward King.
but Alexander still gave Darius a royal funeral, he was born into
Royalty, it was only right, Darius would not be dejected.
Now with no King Darius, Alexander proclaimed himself King of Persia.
In the known world today, Persia is known as Asia.
He adopted many Persian customs, he dressed like a Persian and
Adopted the practice of Proskynesis, a Persian court custom
That involved bowing down and kissing the hand of others
Depending on their rank. The Macedonians were concerned with these
Customs so worked on a plan
To kill Alexander. Alexander had them all killed.
So much blood up to now Alexander had spilled.
He struggled to capture Sogdia,
Which also belonged to the Persian Empire, the Sogdians would not surrender,
However, they finally did. It was here that Alexander saw a girl
that he fell instantly in love with, married her although Sogdian,
And took her along with him on his travels,
So now a further venture unravels.
In 327 BC Alexander entered The Punjab in India.
Some tribes surrendered to Alexander but others didn’t – this was in 327 BC,
Alexander and King Porus of Paurava did meet at the Hydaspes River-
The battle was fought in a severe thunderstorm.
Alexander still remained undefeated.
At Hydaspes Alexander’s beloved horse Bucephalus died so he named
a local city after Bucephalus in the horse’s honor.
Alexander’s soldiers were tired, and refused to go further and wander
to conquer the whole of India, and so returned to Persia down the Indus River
They went, where at a battle in Mali, Alexander was severely wounded.
Alexander wanted to unite the Persians and Macedonians and form a new empire,
loyal only to him, so ordered his solders to take Persian wives,
And he took another 2, all this happened at the Persian city of Susa.
His men resented him changing their culture, a mutiny was evident, so Alexander
Merely replaced Macedonian troops and officers with Persians.
By 323 BC Alexander was head of a massive empire, but lost his homosexual lover.
Alexander was devastated and became more sombre.
He wanted world supremacy and began planning to conquer Arabia.
After a great and fierce battle which he survived, Alexander fell ill
To an Eastern disease, the West Nile fever, as proposed by Epidemiologists
John Marr and Charles Calisher. It was in 323 BC at the age
Of 32, that King Alexander died.
We do not not know how many cried,
Or maybe with relief sighed.
BUT THIS WE DO KNOW,
Alexander’s reign of supremacy was named The Hellenistic Period from
Hellazein which means,
‘To speak Greek or identify with the Greeks’.
He was the most influential and mighty leaders that
The Ancient World ever knew and was revered as such.
His influence ran into Education, Politics,
Culture, and throughout Society. One of History’s greatest military minds,
Diplomatic, powerful, charismatic but ruthless and power hungry.
