Notes About The Poem

Ak

The first time you kissed me it was a surprise, I wasn’t ready.
It was a sneak attack, funny ‘cause they say the girl ‘always knows.’
I think we’re lucky we didn’t chip a tooth.

The unexpected slowed me - ‘ok, that happened,’ I thought.
Because I’d wondered, before - ‘does he like me like THAT?’
and suddenly you came into sharp focus, your lips, your eyes,
your goofy smile. It changed things, for us - like Jesus’s birth
changed time - there was before kiss (bk) and after kiss (ak).

We somehow kludged our way into love - the old fashioned way
without navigation software, dating sites, hookup apps or breadcrumbs.
Like our foremothers and fathers or Columbus - we bumbled into a new world.

I think the way you bumbled into love is by far the BEST way, otherwise it is just a game that young people play for sport. And I take it you are diligently practicing the art of kissing? (After you get over your Covid of course)

I haven’t been kissed in a while - I’m kiss-dehydrated. Peter’s of interviewing. He just got his doctorate in applied physics and he’s interviewing all over - places like Geneva, Switzerland (CERN), Paris (ESA), Berkeley, California (LBL), Princeton, New Jersey (IAS), Los Alamos, New Mexico (LANL), two places he says he can’t talk about and Cambridge MA (MIT). I want him to get that last one (so badly).

Kiss: A touch or caress with the lips. "The anatomical juxtaposition of two orbicularis oris muscles in a state of contraction. =]

Bumbling into a new world, AK, indeed. I am reminded of my wife changing her mind when we gave our wedding kiss. My nose so big it "boinged" when she changed sides. Cyrano would be proud. Thank you, for your poem.

Kissing takes practice. Lots and lots of dedicated practice.
