"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."
--Anne Bradstreet
It’s winter here, almost burning into the raw flesh,
Gasping the grey dread, the ache
Pouring out darkness, melancholy – at once
Doubting and believing, a gust of wintery feelings,
Snow and frost, double the freezing dread,
Lonely and silent, aching to be heard but never crying,
The way the thirsty prayers tremble on chapped lips,
Bidding heaven a hope, a wish, a need –
For sweet sips of coffee and grace, goodness
Lasting all night, speaking to the twilight,
Winds, furious silence, pouring out glad flakes,
Embracing the hills, the valleys, the music
Needless to say, a breath of lasting grace, peace,
In quiet hues – wonder, beauty, purity –
Friends, together for the purpose of lifting hearts,
Comforting the lingering chill, the air,
Gasping like wind’s heavy breath, despairing
Of the gentle, the moments when laughing breezes,
Whispered through the night, springtime,
Rushing into the summer – wonderful dreams,
Stirring the spirit with a kindness, eternal joy -forever
On the wings of light, reflecting the heart’s fire,
Accepting the fact that winter will leave its mark on life,
Trembling in bluest gray stars, shimmering high above
The noisy memories who hold the moon’s laughing embrace.
