We planted a walnut tree three years ago and are eager to see it producing walnuts that look like these. I was surprised to learn that first you have to remove a green hull and THEN crack the brown shell. In time, the green hull falls off the nuts that lie beneath the trees

a walnut tree -

the fruits of its labor

spilled at its feet

One of my unpleasant chores as a child was gleaning this harvest in our back yard. Enjoyed. Congratulations!

I don't think I have ever seen a walnut tree, but I've eaten many walnuts in my life! Congratulations on your win, Andrea. I would have rated this one higher up the list. Regards // paul

that was sweet of you to say. I adore walnuts and it really sparked my interest to learn it is actually a fruit! And when you see them green on the outside that way, it kind of makes sense!!

My parents had one that hung over the drive way. You can't park under these, they make a mess of your car. And we just got sooo tired of picking them up. Endless. Enjoy. :):):)

Ah, something you see in your own neighborhood, Andrea. Lucky girl. Indeed, their "fruits" fall to be taken by scavengers. Enjoyed your haiku! Best wishes in the contest. Love, Carolyn

This brings happy memories of my childhood in Iran. We had many walnut trees on campus and our hands became colored from rubbing that outer hull against rocks to have it peel off before getting to crack the nuts. Lovely haiku. Thanks for sharing.
