Lord, to you I pray for this ignorant, Hateful man who looks down on me With angry, judgmental eyes. A dragon Viciously breathing toxic fire Directed at folks diametrically different In skin pigmentation, race, religion, culture; Folks who look just like me. I pray for this lost soul who refuses To see the error of his ways, Who chooses not to educate himself. A man who was taught to carry The hefty weight of hatred in his heart. A benighted sheep long led astray by An overbearing, malevolent Shepherd. I am Black, Born that way through no fault of mine; My skin not light like his. And that gives him License to judge and despise me? It's not easy, But I'll try not to treat him the same way, Because I choose not to be like him. I know he's still your child, dear Lord, So I pray that you help lead him From darkness to light. Never let my pity For him graduate to hate. Never allow Hatred of any kind enter my heart. I prefer To live and prosper with love for humanity. I prefer the freedom forgiveness affords me. Even if he never becomes a better man someday Even if he never redeems himself, Lord, I pray and sincerely hope that you have Mercy on his soul come Judgment Day. Amen.

Such lofty sentiments of love and forgiveness flow from your heart ! Some people never realizing human dignity expressed through deeds and words go to demean people on external trivialities of color and creed ! We can only pity those people. God our master taught us to love even our enemy. Though hard, through grace we can do that. Great poem and great recognition. Congratulations Edward!

Truth speaks boldly in this poem my friend. Kudos to you for your sentiments of forgiveness. We all must face that day--as you say--they will too.

Hi Edward, I'll agree to pity them for their ignorance, but those who take repeated swings at innocent people...I cannot tolerate. The color of one's skin should have no bearing on any issue. We are all brothers and sisters. Well written.

Hatred comes in all colors but the dictates of one race to another, judging based on the color of skin is a horrible thing. Your poem is true to your heart, beautiful, and the loveliness of your soul shines through in the ability to love, forgive, and share your thoughts.

Edward, this is beautiful. I'll just have to admit that you are a better man than I am, because I haven't even a prayer for the bigot and the bully. I wish that they get exactly what they gave and feel the same pain that they inflicted on others. You are to be so commended for your prayer on their behalf, and I do so, but I simply cannot go there for bigots...sorry!

Thank you, Milt:-) Not a fan of bigots myself and never will be. I guess I pity them more than I hate them. I really hope I accomplished the goal of praying for them without humanizing them in any way, shape or form! Totally understand how you feel, though.
