Notes About The Poem

A Poet's Gift

A Poet's Gift

A poet writes to share a secret depth
Of feelings within their soulful breast.
They write to grasp onto immortality,
To be remembered beyond their death.

A poet shares emotions inked upon the
Page that cannot verbally be conveyed.
They dwell in a world of dreams, of dark
And light, of imagination, of metaphors,

Where heartbreak heaves and love believes.
Poets dwell where nature inspires, and
Longing desires may elevate or decimate.
They feel compelled to write day or night

From their innate state of expressiveness.
Music, dance, and art entwined, are all a part
Of creating that sonnet, free verse or rhyme
Which may capture hearts in belabored sigh,

Cause tears to well, the heart to swell, joy to
Bloom, cause lovers to swoon in blissful reverie.
Poetry...the greatest gift a poet yearns to share
With sensitivity, with their open heart laid bare.

Hello Connie - I turned to this entry because I missed many entries with being away. The title caught my eye and your words of truth kept my attention. We all second your thoughts of such a gift completely. You captured the very essence of it all. May you have a hint of some peace today if that is ever possible for you. Blessings always. Thank you for sharing. Remain safe and well. It was a pleasure turning to your page and entry this morning. (smile)

My life was upside down this year during the holidays. I am just now reading this beautiful comment and I thank you so much Lisa. I too was away for many months because of the loss of my husband and son. It is wonderful being back playing catch-up and comments and on reading so much Poetry that I missed. Bless you. Connie xxoo

As promised, I came back today to view this fave, and was so uplifted by your encapsulation of what poetry means to the poet, the reader, and the legacy we leave behind. Perhaps my favorite feature of PoetrySoup is the ability to store up faves and return to them as time allows. I still love all the things I mentioned last time, and I still think this is poetry perfection. Thank you for the gift - your perception and talents are such a blessing and a godsend. Hugs ~ John

Connie, this is the language of my heart and you speak it fluently. I agree with John below, poetic perfection. I am tucking this safely away in my faves so I can return to it when I forget why I do this. You so elegantly paint the landscape of the poet's heart. I love the euphony of your carefully chosen word pairings: heaves/believes, inspires/desires, elevate/decimate, well/swell. You are so right: poetry is a gift the poet yearns to share with open heart laid bare. Thank you for sharing your gift with us here at Soup. Poetry hugs ~ John

This is poetic perfection, well at least for me, I especially love the internal rhyme, it almost seems unintentional which leads me to believe it was purely intentional and so then shows your brilliance. This has to be another fave!

YOU are a gift, Connie, to us all at Poetry Soup, and this poem is a gift to anyone who knows the slings and arrows of writing verse, and the rather naked feeling of putting a piece of your soul on paper for others to read and critique ... this is a favorite, obviously, and going in my folder! Wonderful write, My Dear Friend - you are doing some powerful writing of late, so keep up the great work! Blessings! :o) <3
