A Hunched Backed Mobster

A HUNCHED BACKED MOBSTER It’s sunset in late afternoon, where towards a water pan, A pride of lionesses, approach with a much rehearsed plan, Followed by a clan of mobsters, Hyenas cackling luridly like monsters, All wanted the impala buck, upon seeing them he ran! The impala was unfortunately no match for these fierce lions, Nor the clan of hyenas running after them in defiance, The lions caught it with a crunch, But the hyenas wanted this munch, A stand-off between two enemies, who have no alliance. Hyenas with much stronger jaws and now many in number Threatened the lions, who did not fancy forever to slumber, And decided to not argue this kill, Hyenas hunchbacked, thick necked, will Now demolish this meal, free from any lion encumber. The Hyena a predator and scavenger with intense criminal intent, Classed as a species of only few, the Hyaenidae, this meant, Was regarded neither as dog or cat, A thief, a lowlife, a rat, A brazen mobster, who leaves behind him a rancid scent! FOOT NOTE But should hyenas bump into the king of the bush and his brother at the Kruger National Park, Visitors, will be in awe as hyenas back off, outgunned and outwitted, They will slink away!

This is an epic limerick about hyenas, Jennifer! You've really told the story and characterized the species. Bravo!... And just love that rhyme with 'encumber.' Warmest wishes, Gershon

Thank-you my friend for three lovely comments - dislike these animals, scavengers and devious creatures, but still happy when I spot one as they are scarce to see. Hugs, Jennifer

They are Arturo, but cunningly so, smelly, rancid animals scavengers - yet when we see one - hey that's great, as they are scarce to spot! Thanks for the visit Arturo and blessings. Jennifer.

G'day Jennifer ... you do live in a continent with so many different predators and prey, so it's a nice informative poem on one incident involving a trio of how nature works - thank you Jennifer - Lindsay

I don't feel I've been to the park unless we see the big five, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopards and of course the majestic lions - the most difficult to spot and more often than not, we don't, is the leopard. We have a much smaller park Pilanesberg, near Sun City, a famous Las Vegas (but tiny in comparison) type of destination. We also have a tourist destination called the Cradle of Mankind where archeologists unearthed a skeleton which indicates an evolutionary link - we are full of surprises! Great comment, thank you Lindsay! Hugs, Jennifer.

These poor Impala are so prolific in the Park Paul, they are actually just fodder for the predators and and an important part of the food chain - they are dainty animals and rather cute and, I also feel sorry for them, but that's life in the African bush! Warm regards and hugs, Jenny.

I am staying away from hyenas now for the rest of my life; I had no idea that "laughing hyena" really means "laughing because lions are afraid of me" hyena. Thanks for the education, Jennifer. Wow! You have schooled me today!

I remember on one of our trips we spotted a hyena slinking its way to cross our path - of course us being in the safety of our car -it was quite a sight and took a video. it was drizzling the whole time we stayed there and rather cool - we saw so many different types of Eagles, there were no up thermals for them because of the weather, so they gave us a treat! Glad you enjoyed my poem Caren, Hugs, Jennifer.

Hi Vijay thank you for a lovely comment, and it is so desperately sad to watch a warthog, which is very fast when it runs, and squeals really loud, cornered and caught by a predator! Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.
