A "highly" Debated Issue

From glaucoma to chemotherapy
Medical marijuana has its place
But you won’t find any prescribed
In the conservative Sunshine State

Chris couldn’t eat while under treatment
Watched him lose one-hundred pounds
He had no access to an appetite stimulant
His weight was 85 when laid in the ground

Hefty Jen had lived a life of kindness
Taught spiritually uplifting courses
She suffered when chemo raced through her system
Until people said, “How beautifully slim her corpse is.”

When Dad’s glaucoma grew severe
He relied only on eye drops that made him tear
His gift of sight was taken slowly
Though THC might have helped his eyes clear

And when I first wrestled with ulcerative colitis
A college friend brought me a joint, said, “Try it”
Less than an hour later I was eating without pain
But laws are clear, Florida doctors can’t prescribe it

Research has proved there are benefits
Only medical marijuana use can provide
But those who worry about drug abuse
Say those who could benefit should be denied

Each day in the headlines we read of drunk drivers
Mostly teens who seek access through friends
And if they want marijuana, they find a way to get it
But for those who abide by laws, agony never ends

If smoking pot or ingesting a tablet of THC
Can help a person who is suffering great pain
Don’t you think the time has come
To ask prohibitionists to explain

Why people who are hurting needlessly
Cannot have access to any remedy
That soothes their aches, improves their last days
Diminishing the symptoms of their tragedy

Hey Carolyn great quatrain. to play devil's advocate, marijuana is a gateway drug to crack and heroin. therefore allowing it any access to the population, regardless of cause, will convince teenagers and other no good hooligans to try it as well and then the entire morality of our society would collapse under the weight of purple smoke.I for one feel the laws should be made more strict! now watch me go smoke up when the cameras are turned off as I am a raging hypocrite, or you know, a republican.

Dear Carolyn, you just said it! When I was young I used to smoke Maryjane once in a while and it did not harm me. Even had cookies with THC and it did not harm me neither!!! I believe smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol is much more dangerous. It is a shame that it is also forbidden by law in Germany whereas you can freely by it in the Netherlands. Thank you for your ongoing kind comments and have a great day!...Love, Gert

So true Carolyn, laws are made and maintained by the most narrow minded people. Agape, Moses

Had a friend who recently died from cancer and was prescribed medical marijuana because of loss of appetite. When he died, he was as slim as he was when he was young or slimmer...He looked much as he did in youth...If people can get it as a precription those prescriptions will be abused as are other prescribed meds that people use illegally...There is always good and bad as is there is always good and bad in us which one we feed the most wins out..Good luck in the contest..Sara

You have presented it well. I am conservative on this, but I am not unfeeling or unbending on this, as I am on some issues. My primary verboten is lighting up in the home with young children or infants. I have to say NO! If they could have administered under strict constraints, say the clinic or an reserved , assigned area, I might come on board with this. But, enough culture wars. You're great and you've always been so kind and encouraging to me. I can never say Thank you enough. Love, Gerard.

A great poem. You said it all. Laws were made for criminals and justice should be able to figure it out. There are lots of legally prescribed medicines that are more dangerous if taken unwisely. I have no experience with it in any form but I know what makes sense. Thanks for your kind remarks about my poem. Love, Joyce

some things will never come to an end.and its always depressing thinking of the things people will do & sacrifice just for money and drugs, or any other unhealthy addiction that they don't actually need, only want. it never takes away the pain, because the events that happen while they use these drugs add on to the trouble, misery & guilt. great write, always. ~Always&Forever Lynette

If it's handled and distributed in it's pill form. The system of any country is not doing it's duty by blocking it's usage. Another terrific piece Carolyn >> James

Strong poem that shows how people suffer, society sometimes is a little nuts, especially since some of the legislators use what they make difficult for others to get. If this is for contest good luck!
