A Father's Lament - To My Children

The die have been cast The cards have been played I can't reconcile Decisions I've made Made out of love And not out of spite I won't say I'm sorry Though I'm feeling contrite When you were young I was a god As you grew older I was just odd It just goes to show What a difference time makes Your perspective on life And the wisdom it takes Just be objective When considering the facts Don't judge me too harshly While grinding your axe an original poem By "poemdog" Daniel Turner for all of those times I said" No" and you didn't understand

Parenting never ends...and sometimes we end up at loggerheads with those we love the most. I recently told my son that "no one likes to be laughed at", now it has become an inside joke to the 2 of us. I know that the axe is being ground, but perhaps now, without as much edge as it could have had.

It is up to us as parents to be objective with the things our children bring to us. One can't say no or yes every time. It was always a long discussion at our house. Usually they know the answer before they ask. Thanks for your comments.

This touched me...you have expressed in simple but powerful rhyme not only a father's but most parent's lament. Does a parent ever make a decision out of spite. It is always out of love, just as you've written ...PS. Re your reply to my other comment, I don't know about the intellectual...I do know, as with most readers who also write, I try to reach that place from where the writer comes. Best regards! :-)
