A Distant Dream

In my mind, God was but a distant dream,
nowhere to be seen, and yet, everywhere.
A bedtime story, with a feel-good theme,
spread by religion through fear and prayer.
I gave little credence to the thought that
a bridge o'er troubled waters could be real.
For life's always used me as a doormat,
destined to squirm under a bully's heel.
After years of denial, I found faith,
Jesus entered my heart for the first time.
And the presence of this spectral wraith,
brought me hope that slowed anxiety's climb.
It took me a lifetime to figure out
if God exists, but now, I have no doubt.
