Notes About The Poem

"A cloud of witnesses" is a famous biblical metaphor from Hebrews 12:1. It describes the generations of faithful people who have gone before, serving as both an inspiring example and a supportive cheering section for those currently living out their faith. 

A Cloud of Witness POTD

Thousands of candles lit.
They form hazy clouds
They gather, unseen,
in the hush between pews
where people were praying.

I felt them even as candles flickered
I looked around as I heard their prayers.
Each heart bent but did not break.
They were the echo of endurance,
They expounded their faith
Except for a few that hid
in the dim corridors of doubt.

I saw most of the candles dimming,
Smoke rose and wonder what memory carries.
High in the vault clouds gather.
I wondered about faith and doubt.
I knelt down and fervently prayed.
God, please give me light.

However, Some light them doubting themselves and do it only because its the right thing to do. The Greek Orthodox church unfortunately still mostly USES ancient Greek IN THE SERVICE AND MANY GREEKS FLOUNDER INCLUDING ME. FORTUNATELY I'm fluent in MY spoken Greek so it helps. CayCay Godwin June 26, 2026 at 3:15 PM When I read your poems, certain ones give me the vibe of being seeded within you & I think God did just that for this one. Did this suddenly flash to you? 2 nights ago, during spiritual study, I read that some souls, rather than coming back, choose to stay in heaven to provide guidance to those on earth, and your poem refers to such. My Dad did that for me. Not just good writing, but one that makes a difference within all who read, even if tiny. From all I don't know, I do know we needn't fear death.
