Checking every overpass they came upon
But they never found him.
They went to the pantry that he had spoken of
But the folks there said that no one like him had come in that day
And that they hadn't sold any portable gas cans.
They gave all the supplies to the local shelter
And the young lady checked many times in the weeks to come
But the man was never found.
She began to wonder at times if she had imagined the whole thing
If maybe the car had stalled and she'd fallen asleep
Then dreamed the whole thing and awakened to continue on.
Slowly, over time, it passed from her thoughts.
Then, late that Spring she took her car to the self-wash near her apartment
And when she started to wash the rear end of her car
She noticed something unusual ...
There, in the dirty film on her rear bumper, was a message
A finger-written message of Christmas kindness that simply read:
"No worries - your angel is watching"
She got in her car and drove off with a smile
And a very warm heart ...
Leaving the dirty bumper just the way it was.
