A Chicago Love Story
There was once a road not taken for complicated reasons
They say that for everything, there is a time and a season
He was nineteen when he learned a most valuable lesson
It came quietly, quickly, and vanished with some questions
She was friendly, endowed with an air of freedom, and nice
Like none prior, she brought pure joy and laughter into his life
But their relationship was never to become a magnificent one
It turned windy after initially being one so gentle and calm
Feeling such loss, he found it too painful to say goodbye From a second story window he sadly watched with a sigh,
as she slowly walked out of his life on that warm summer day
They felt the love in their hearts but had nothing more to say
They faced their future separately, he and she against the wind
They chose not to ascend that mountain, unlike the little engine
Perhaps theirs was a relationship never meant to advance
The mindsets and social barriers never gave them a chance
Pain, sadness, and tears; short-lived but never forgotten
There was so much more to be said that never was spoken
Two college students developed a quick romance in Chicago
but took different roads to happiness more than 50 years ago.
