A Certain Age

If you live to a certain age And reach that special “senior” stage, You very likely will engage In noting your decline. The aching knees that slow your pace, The need for cane or splint or brace, The things you’ve lost and must replace, The hour at which you dine. The constant visits to M.D.’s, The nodding off to catch some Z’s, The words you know but can’t quite seize, The fast-asleep by nine. The list goes on, but what’s the use? For just the young or most obtuse Believe the years will not reduce Their lives to one like mine.

Wow, just Wow! And I might add, forever young. Living's not for the weak.

You have captured aging so well in just a few lines, Ilene: We have the desires to do what we did when younger but not the strength of agility. Best, SuZ

I read Jim’s and had to come check yours out. I do hope I get up there in age, but less doctor’s visit and bones crackling. Lol. Ilene, I certainly enjoyed yours very much too.

Wow. How I can relate…… seems more so these last few years. “Fast” is now good enough when in the past only “fastest” would do and tomorrow is now an option for things due yesterday …… nice work and thoughts combined into a charming read. Darrell

Love it, Ilene. The more "senior" I become, the less "special" I feel about it. I believe I have noted in a couple of my pieces, that "growing old is overrated". And I wish that knowing that I share some...or most...of the things in your list with so many others would make me feel better about it....but it really doesn't. PS: Hey, Ilene...I forgot to mention earlier that the French have a very nice way of referring to an "older" woman...they call her "une femme d'un certain age".

You give us all, the way it is ilene, and so true it is, and then the last stanza, the youth today, don't want to know, neither listen. is this the never ending cycle? i wonder. Harry

I have all those conditions and all the Md's ......... Ilene I can fully relate to what you abide, ...... The stick the sleep and even the knees.... .. The outside body is old BUT I am young inside !!!! ... Loved your poem, and I am sure we all feel like a young person is trapped in this old body.. Cheers Wen
