The Wreath of Chives Celebration
"The Wreath of Chives"
is believed to originate from
the story of Lovers.
They remained nameless and only
revealed there name is there
partner wished to marry them.
They would plait the long stems
of chives and attach olive leaves to them
they said chives were a pleasant onion
more suited to romance,
and the olive leaves represented
t he peace they wished
to keep by remaining secret.
the story goes that the oils of
olives and oranges were
drawn to create soaps
the lavender oils
would be added more for scent.
they would test the soaps
by having people
plait the stems of garlic,
onions and chives.
and then would wash there hands.
the most tamed smell was
said to have been the chives.
they would give the winner
of the soap contest
100 gold coins
and a wreath made of dried chives
and green olive leaves.
During the time of Early spring
during the rainy season
Contestants would pray for
the warmest days
at the Celebration of chives.
Bouts were done upon the
mounts of clay with a burlap canvas
pinned to the edges.
the winner
were gifted a Cup full of coins
and a trophy with a wreath of chives and olive leave
on them.
