I never got why you always
Ate the red pink color out
The Sherbet ice cream

It was like excavation
How you removed all the cherry
Without even affecting the other colors

Leaving the orange and the vanilla
Neatly for others
Who does that?

Being a poet I used to think that one day
That could be a metaphor in some poem
Which would take the younger half of my life
To give it reason

Now watching you sleep during your chemo
Puts my every coping skill to test
Cause I could really use a hug
Or even one of your corny colloquialisms

Four years of Advanced English and
I had to ask a surgeon what he meant
By two days to live

I asked him that six times

Watching the beeping machines
Playing pinball with your
 diaastolic & Systolic
I hope I pronounced it right
You are the one who always mispronounced

Turning my head while the nurse
Changes your diaper hurts in the worst way
Five years ago I watched you
Put a diaper on sideways
July will be his sixth birthday

And though you are on that stupid respirator Thing
I slipped headphones on your head
Noticing your eyebrows moving
Only Prince could make your eyebrows
Dance in such a rhythm

So I knew you were listening
Sorry I purposely didn’t have any Bowie

Remembering your face when you got a low C
 on an exam intentionally
Just so i could get a high D
You did more work on my term paper
Than I ever could

Last night I went down to that little
Hospital aquarium thing
where they have the tiny waterfalls and plants
and danced barefoot in the tiny ponds
Like it was Malibu or Santa Monica
It took two security guards to talk me out

I refused their five finger therapy test
You would have laughed

I just couldn’t watch the last minutes
Of your life
Not even the last seconds

I would have said something to God
That would have gotten me
Ex communicated from every
Religion

Neither God nor Jesus has an answer
Why 30 year old mothers
need to die with cancer

I blame your father for your mother's
Wrinkles and Silver hair-
No way was she oblivious
 To his multiple affairs

And watching those stupid heart lines
 reverberate
 from Elvis
To Como to John Denver
From James Brown to a silent Sonata

Some guidance counselor Chaplin person
came in
Asked if I needed to talk to someone
I said, Only if they are on a wine bottle

I know I was abrasively rude

And I know your moans and groans
We're really just encrypted signals
Telling me you remembered
my three month marriage

The volleyball season lasted longer

I Spent an entire week with you
And never once did you say
You knew he was a loser

But he was...

A day later we were Laughing…
Over Sherbet Ice cream

The Doctor said it could be
All be over in minutes
So I guess I leave my final respects
I promise
Your children will never know neglect

I exited the elevator
From the halls hearing crying
Your family covering you like an umbrella

Now I get the metaphor
Of you eating the pink
Out the rainbow sherbet

Leaving us the Orange & Vanilla

Losing my mother at 10 and being shipped to a big city on a greyhound bus meant I needed a voice to survive. Words were all I had to deal with the internal pain and external fear. I was as frightened as a Vietnam soldier in that city. If I didn't write I feared I would have forgotten...

Literally one of the best poems I have read on the soup. I am greatly moved and appreciate the intimate and familiar feel of this piece, almost like slipping into an old sweater. Congrats on POTD and for having the courage to post. So many will relate to this poignant piece. Blessings Rick.

I am moved as rivers are moved by sea storms. Your words encourage me. These Poems come from a deep place of pain and are very "intimate" as you described. It takes a writer to understand a writer. After this I will seek your work. Thank You Rick for Positive thoughts. You made me braver.

Thank you so much my forever friend. I no longer remember which door in my soul these poems come from or which window they go out of. Your words mean so much however as I return after being away a year from Poetry. After 32 straight years they finally gave me a year off, well kind of...I wanted to cry after I read this poem a dozen times as I remember my mother's ordeal as a ten year old kid..My stepfather being the loser mentioned in the poem..Filled with words I wish I could forget. Thank you Jan..Thank you I look forward to reading your poems in 2021

Oh my ! "Leaving the Orange & Vanilla" Kindness is a virtue that doesn't go unnoticed. Giving to others. Your thoughts tug at my heartstrings. This is tender and emotional, all at the same time. Congratulations Michael, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. ~ Brandy

Thank you so much...My mother's tragic one year marriage followed by her death. I watched as a ten year old trying to interpret adult events. Poetry is the helium that kept me floating in clouds. You are so appreciated for your sincere and encouraging words Brandy...

Michael, this is a special...no, an extra special piece of work. I have watched a loved one die...my mother, my wife and folks I didn't really know. It's difficult. I hope you have found some peace. I loved the metaphor, too. Congrats on POTD!

Thank You Milton for taking the time to read my Poem. Your words move me like a spell. Men make wars but do so little to fight cancer an enemy that Bombs all nations..I extend my sadness for your losses. I know they were amazing people...But they live on in our lyrics if we believe... Picture them hugging you right now..I look forward to reading your work...Michael

Your words are enlarged like font in my mind & heart. I will appreciate this vote of appreciation and pick up the pen again. I always wanted to enter in Poetry magazines but didn't know they existed. Perhaps I'll put on that tux once more. In the meantime I am off to read a few of your poems. Thank you..

Thank you so much Constance. It is a paradox that a million don't make headline news. CNN nor fox are interested. So many people want to make them invisible. So many people share my poems with sick loved ones and I feel blessed, the poet who kept his promise to those I lost along the way. Your words mean a lot to me. Hug your family for me!!

Congratulations, Mike, on POTD! The range of emotions, the headphones playing, the heartbreak of cherry sherbert...perhaps that shall be your modus operandi from now on, or perhaps that will be left. My mom has cancer and hopefully will get a good report as she had her last chemo session. No matter what age, we cling to our loved ones. Hugs..Kim

Kim Thank you for reading my poem about cancer. I pray for your mother as I would for mine if she were living. These are the wars we should be fighting i.e. Diseases of Mass destruction..I am so glad the vibration went from my pen to your reading eyes. I feel your energy though we are a zillion miles apart..Keep writing.
