A Conversation Between Friends
The Fall afternoon was calm and quite warm,
a sky without clouds, the salty smell of the reefs;
it must have been a true delight not hear any noise
as a conversation between friends was clearly heard.
The parasol was fashionable in the thirties,
women carried everywhere they went,
to shelter themselves from sunrays;
young ladies used it to seek romance.
Mothers spent an hour or two on the rocks
of the breezy beach to talk about family,
friends or whatever was the topic of the day...
idling away when their kids were in school.
Alfred Glendening caught that scene while walking,
he portrayed well their liveliness with superb style;
he could hear the thoughtful words they spoke,
although he was more than several yards away.
