- Old Design -

At the flea market I found you
                                 Old and dusty.....but so nice
You`ve been so helpful and wise
Whirred around and around with your wheels
                               Many meters and perhaps miles
                                  Much joy and money saved
Maybe even earned a penny or two
Tired eyes and hands treated you good
Far into the night, you`ve worked
The wheel spun around and around
                                  Never fail, always available
                                       ready for new tasks
Yes, I found you at the flea market
With a little soap and water
you are as good as new
Grandma`s sewing machine is so fine
Now you are decoration in my living room

The commemoration of what makes great living is not prerogative of preachers and scientists, for poems like this tell that the vision of poets is the very strand of our human existence. A simple act, a single moment, the preservation of something from the human journey, and the poem explodes with the pathos of pure human sensibility.

They used to be works of art, so carefully designed in metal and painted with flair. I used to sew on my aunt's which came from my grandmother. It is gone now, to someone who will cherish it I hope. Feet moving in rhythm along with hands, it was fun. A wonderful poem you have created Anne Lise. It brought back lovely memories. Mahalo

Great poem. At first I thought it was a bicycle. I remember my Grandmother had a tread mill sewing machine... as kids we were so facinated with it... My hubby is better at sewing than I am.

In your fourteenth line, just replace "soup" with "soap". The word "soup" is that usual first course of a meal people eat out of a bowl with a spoon. Everything else looks good.

You know you are a true poetess. I heard it said more than once, if you can write of inantimate objects with imagery and delight you have honed your craft as a poet. You surely have done that here. Bravo! and much thank you, for always supporting my efforts here with kindness and sencerity, much love, God bless you, Cindy
