Number 3 on the Docket

 The lawyer, are you?
Well! I ain't got nothin' to say.
Nothin'! I told the perlice I hadn't nothin'.
They know'd real well 'twas me.
Ther warn't no supposin', Ketchin' me in the woods as they did, An' me in my house dress.
Folks don't walk miles an' miles In the drifted snow, With no hat nor wrap on 'em Ef everythin's all right, I guess.
All right? Ha! Ha! Ha! Nothin' warn't right with me.
Never was.
Oh, Lord! Why did I do it? Why ain't it yesterday, and Ed here agin? Many's the time I've set up with him nights When he had cramps, or rheumatizm, or somethin'.
I used ter nurse him same's ef he was a baby.
I wouldn't hurt him, I love him! Don't you dare to say I killed him.
'Twarn't me! Somethin' got aholt o' me.
I couldn't help it.
Oh, what shall I do! What shall I do! Yes, Sir.
No, Sir.
I beg your pardon, I -- I -- Oh, I'm a wicked woman! An' I'm desolate, desolate! Why warn't I struck dead or paralyzed Afore my hands done it.
Oh, my God, what shall I do! No, Sir, ther ain't no extenuatin' circumstances, An' I don't want none.
I want a bolt o' lightnin' To strike me dead right now! Oh, I'll tell yer.
But it won't make no diff'rence.
Nothin' will.
Yes, I killed him.
Why do yer make me say it? It's cruel! Cruel! I killed him because o' th' silence.
The long, long silence, That watched all around me, And he wouldn't break it.
I tried to make him, Time an' agin, But he was terrible taciturn, Ed was.
He never spoke 'cept when he had to, An' then he'd only say "yes" and "no".
You can't even guess what that silence was.
I'd hear it whisperin' in my ears, An' I got frightened, 'twas so thick, An' al'ays comin' back.
Ef Ed would ha' talked sometimes It would ha' driven it away; But he never would.
He didn't hear it same as I did.
You see, Sir, Our farm was off'n the main road, And set away back under the mountain; And the village was seven mile off, Measurin' after you'd got out o' our lane.
We didn't have no hired man, 'Cept in hayin' time; An' Dane's place, That was the nearest, Was clear way 'tother side the mountain.
They used Marley post-office An' ours was Benton.
Ther was a cart-track took yer to Dane's in Summer, An' it warn't above two mile that way, But it warn't never broke out Winters.
I used to dread the Winters.
Seem's ef I couldn't abear to see the golden-rod bloomin'; Winter'd come so quick after that.
You don't know what snow's like when yer with it Day in an' day out.
Ed would be out all day loggin', An' I set at home and look at the snow Layin' over everythin'; It 'ud dazzle me blind, Till it warn't white any more, but black as ink.
Then the quiet 'ud commence rushin' past my ears Till I most went mad listenin' to it.
Many's the time I've dropped a pan on the floor Jest to hear it clatter.
I was most frantic when dinner-time come An' Ed was back from the woods.
I'd ha' give my soul to hear him speak.
But he'd never say a word till I asked him Did he like the raised biscuits or whatever, An' then sometimes he'd jest nod his answer.
Then he'd go out agin, An' I'd watch him from the kitchin winder.
It seemed the woods come marchin' out to meet him An' the trees 'ud press round him an' hustle him.
I got so I was scared o' th' trees.
I thought they come nearer, Every day a little nearer, Closin' up round the house.
I never went in t' th' woods Winters, Though in Summer I liked 'em well enough.
It warn't so bad when my little boy was with us.
He used to go sleddin' and skatin', An' every day his father fetched him to school in the pung An' brought him back agin.
We scraped an' scraped fer Neddy, We wanted him to have a education.
We sent him to High School, An' then he went up to Boston to Technology.
He was a minin' engineer, An' doin' real well, A credit to his bringin' up.
But his very first position ther was an explosion in the mine.
And I'm glad! I'm glad! He ain't here to see me now.
Neddy! Neddy! I'm your mother still, Neddy.
Don't turn from me like that.
I can't abear it.
I can't! I can't! What did you say? Oh, yes, Sir.
I'm here.
I'm very sorry, I don't know what I'm sayin'.
No, Sir, Not till after Neddy died.
'Twas the next Winter the silence come, I don't remember noticin' it afore.
That was five year ago, An' it's been gittin' worse an' worse.
I asked Ed to put in a telephone.
I thought ef I felt the whisperin' comin' on I could ring up some o' th' folks.
But Ed wouldn't hear of it.
He said we'd paid so much for Neddy We couldn't hardly git along as 'twas.
An' he never understood me wantin' to talk.
Well, this year was worse'n all the others; We had a terrible spell o' stormy weather, An' the snow lay so thick You couldn't see the fences even.
Out o' doors was as flat as the palm o' my hand, Ther warn't a hump or a holler Fer as you could see.
It was so quiet The snappin' o' the branches back in the wood-lot Sounded like pistol shots.
Ed was out all day Same as usual.
An' it seemed he talked less'n ever.
He didn't even say `Good-mornin'', once or twice, An' jest nodded or shook his head when I asked him things.
On Monday he said he'd got to go over to Benton Fer some oats.
I'd oughter ha' gone with him, But 'twas washin' day An' I was afeared the fine weather'd break, An' I couldn't do my dryin'.
All my life I'd done my work punctual, An' I couldn't fix my conscience To go junketin' on a washin'-day.
I can't tell you what that day was to me.
It dragged an' dragged, Fer ther warn't no Ed ter break it in the middle Fer dinner.
Every time I stopped stirrin' the water I heerd the whisperin' all about me.
I stopped oftener'n I should To see ef 'twas still ther, An' it al'ays was.
An' gittin' louder It seemed ter me.
Once I threw up the winder to feel the wind.
That seemed most alive somehow.
But the woods looked so kind of menacin' I closed it quick An' started to mangle's hard's I could, The squeakin' was comfortin'.
Well, Ed come home 'bout four.
I seen him down the road, An' I run out through the shed inter th' barn To meet him quicker.
I hollered out, `Hullo!' But he didn't say nothin', He jest drove right in An' climbed out o' th' sleigh An' commenced unharnessin'.
I asked him a heap o' questions; Who he'd seed An' what he'd done.
Once in a while he'd nod or shake, But most o' th' time he didn't do nothin'.
'Twas gittin' dark then, An' I was in a state, With the loneliness An' Ed payin' no attention Like somethin' warn't livin'.
All of a sudden it come, I don't know what, But I jest couldn't stand no more.
It didn't seem 's though that was Ed, An' it didn't seem as though I was me.
I had to break a way out somehow, Somethin' was closin' in An' I was stiflin'.
Ed's loggin' axe was ther, An' I took it.
Oh, my God! I can't see nothin' else afore me all the time.
I run out inter th' woods, Seemed as ef they was pullin' me; An' all the time I was wadin' through the snow I seed Ed in front of me Where I'd laid him.
An' I see him now.
There! There! What you holdin' me fer? I want ter go to Ed, He's bleedin'.
Stop holdin' me.
I got to go.
I'm comin', Ed.
I'll be ther in a minit.

CURIOSITY

Mammy's in de kitchen, an' de do' is shet;
All de pickaninnies climb an' tug an' sweat,[Pg 242]
Gittin' to de winder, stickin' dah lak flies,
Evah one ermong us des all nose an' eyes.
"Whut's she cookin', Isaac?"
"Whut's she cookin', Jake?"
"Is it sweet pertaters? Is hit pie er cake?"
But we couldn't mek out even whah we stood
Whut was mammy cookin' dat could smell so good.
Mammy spread de winder, an' she frown an' frown,
How de pickaninnies come a-tum-blin' down!
Den she say: "Ef you-all keeps a-peepin' in,
How I'se gwine to whup you, my! 't 'ill be a sin!
Need n' come a-sniffin' an' a-nosin' hyeah,
'Ca'se I knows my business, nevah feah."
Won't somebody tell us—how I wish dey would!—
Whut is mammy cookin' dat it smells so good?
We know she means business, an' we dassent stay,
Dough it's mighty tryin' fuh to go erway;
But we goes a-troopin' down de ol' wood-track
'Twell dat steamin' kitchen brings us stealin' back,
Climbin' an' a-peepin' so's to see inside.
Whut on earf kin mammy be so sha'p to hide?
I'd des up an' tell folks w'en I knowed I could,

Then Was My Neophyte

 Then was my neophyte,
Child in white blood bent on its knees
Under the bell of rocks,
Ducked in the twelve, disciple seas
The winder of the water-clocks
Calls a green day and night.
My sea hermaphrodite, Snail of man in His ship of fires That burn the bitten decks, Knew all His horrible desires The climber of the water sex Calls the green rock of light.
Who in these labyrinths, This tidethread and the lane of scales, Twine in a moon-blown shell, Escapes to the flat cities' sails Furled on the fishes' house and hell, Nor falls to His green myths? Stretch the salt photographs, The landscape grief, love in His oils Mirror from man to whale That the green child see like a grail Through veil and fin and fire and coil Time on the canvas paths.
He films my vanity.
Shot in the wind, by tilted arcs, Over the water come Children from homes and children's parks Who speak on a finger and thumb, And the masked, headless boy.
His reels and mystery The winder of the clockwise scene Wound like a ball of lakes Then threw on that tide-hoisted screen Love's image till my heartbone breaks By a dramatic sea.
Who kills my history? The year-hedged row is lame with flint, Blunt scythe and water blade.
'Who could snap off the shapeless print From your to-morrow-treading shade With oracle for eye?' Time kills me terribly.
'Time shall not murder you,' He said, 'Nor the green nought be hurt; Who could hack out your unsucked heart, O green and unborn and undead?' I saw time murder me.

Marthys younkit

 The mountain brook sung lonesomelike, and loitered on its way
Ez if it waited for a child to jine it in its play;
The wild-flowers uv the hillside bent down their heads to hear
The music uv the little feet that had somehow grown so dear;
The magpies, like winged shadders, wuz a-flutterin' to an' fro
Among the rocks an' holler stumps in the ragged gulch below;
The pines an' hemlocks tosst their boughs (like they wuz arms) and made
Soft, sollum music on the slope where he had often played;
But for these lonesome, sollum voices on the mountain-side,
There wuz no sound the summer day that Marthy's younkit died.
We called him Marthy's younkit, for Marthy wuz the name Uv her ez wuz his mar, the wife uv Sorry Tom,--the same Ez taught the school-house on the hill, way back in '69, When she marr'd Sorry Tom, wich owned the Gosh-all-Hemlock mine! And Marthy's younkit wuz their first, wich, bein' how it meant The first on Red Hoss Mountain, wuz truly a' event! The miners sawed off short on work ez soon ez they got word That Dock Devine allowed to Casey what had just occurred; We loaded up an' whooped around until we all wuz hoarse Salutin' the arrival, wich weighed ten pounds, uv course! Three years, and sech a pretty child!--his mother's counterpart! Three years, an' sech a holt ez he had got on every heart! A peert an' likely little tyke with hair ez red ez gold, A-laughin', toddlin' everywhere,--'nd only three years old! Up yonder, sometimes, to the store, an' sometimes down the hill He kited (boys is boys, you know,--you couldn't keep him still!) An' there he'd play beside the brook where purpul wild-flowers grew, An' the mountain pines an' hemlocks a kindly shadder threw, An' sung soft, sollum toons to him, while in the gulch below The magpies, like strange sperrits, went flutterin' to an' fro.
Three years, an' then the fever come,--it wuzn't right, you know, With all us old ones in the camp, for that little child to go; It's right the old should die, but that a harmless little child Should miss the joy uv life an' love,--that can't be reconciled! That's what we thought that summer day, an' that is what we said Ez we looked upon the piteous face uv Marthy's younkit dead.
But for his mother's sobbin', the house wuz very still, An' Sorry Tom wuz lookin', through the winder, down the hill, To the patch beneath the hemlocks where his darlin' used to play, An' the mountain brook sung lonesomelike an' loitered on its way.
A preacher come from Roarin' Crick to comfort 'em an' pray, 'Nd all the camp wuz present at the obsequies next day; A female teacher staged it twenty miles to sing a hymn, An' we jined her in the chorus,--big, husky men an' grim Sung "Jesus, Lover uv my Soul," an' then the preacher prayed, An' preacht a sermon on the death uv that fair blossom laid Among them other flowers he loved,--wich sermon set sech weight On sinners bein' always heeled against the future state, That, though it had been fashionable to swear a perfec' streak, There warn't no swearin' in the camp for pretty nigh a week! Last thing uv all, four strappin' men took up the little load An' bore it tenderly along the windin', rocky road, To where the coroner had dug a grave beside the brook, In sight uv Marthy's winder, where the same could set an' look An' wonder if his cradle in that green patch, long an' wide, Wuz ez soothin' ez the cradle that wuz empty at her side; An' wonder if the mournful songs the pines wuz singin' then Wuz ez tender ez the lullabies she'd never sing again, 'Nd if the bosom of the earth in wich he lay at rest Wuz half ez lovin' 'nd ez warm ez wuz his mother's breast.
The camp is gone; but Red Hoss Mountain rears its kindly head, An' looks down, sort uv tenderly, upon its cherished dead; 'Nd I reckon that, through all the years, that little boy wich died Sleeps sweetly an' contentedly upon the mountain-side; That the wild-flowers uv the summer-time bend down their heads to hear The footfall uv a little friend they know not slumbers near; That the magpies on the sollum rocks strange flutterin' shadders make, An' the pines an' hemlocks wonder that the sleeper doesn't wake; That the mountain brook sings lonesomelike an' loiters on its way Ez if it waited for a child to jine it in its play.

Contentment

 An Ancient gaffer once I knew,
Who puffed a pipe and tossed a tankard;
He claimed a hundred years or two,
And for a dozen more he hankered;
So o'er a pint I asked how he
Had kept his timbers tight together;
He grinned and answered: "It maun be
Because I likes all kinds o' weather.
"Fore every morn when I get up I lights my clay pipe wi' a cinder, And as me mug o' tea I sup I looks from out the cottage winder; And if it's shade or if it's shine Or wind or snow befit to freeze me, I always say: 'Well, now that's fine .

It's just the sorto' day to please me.
' "For I have found it wise in life To take the luck the way it's coming; A wake, a worry or a wife - Just carry on and keep a-humming.
And so I lights me pipe o' clay, And through the morn on blizzard borders, I chuckle in me guts and say: 'It's just the day the doctor orders.
'" A mighty good philosophy Thought I, and leads to longer living, To make the best of things that be, And take the weather of God's giving; So though the sky be ashen grey, And winds be edged and sleet be slanting, Heap faggots on the fire and say: "It's just the kind of day I'm wanting.

Bottle O

 I ain't the kind of bloke as takes to any steady job; 
I drives me bottle cart around the town; 
A bloke what keeps 'is eyes about can always make a bob -- 
I couldn't bear to graft for every brown.
There's lots of handy things about in everybody's yard, There's cocks and hens a-runnin' to an' fro, And little dogs what comes and barks -- we take 'em off their guard And we puts 'em with the Empty Bottle-O! Chorus -- So it's any "Empty bottles! Any empty bottle-O!" You can hear us round for half a mile or so And you'll see the women rushing To take in the Monday's washing When they 'ear us crying, "Empty Bottle-O!" I'm driving down by Wexford-street and up a winder goes, A girl sticks out 'er 'ead and looks at me, An all-right tart with ginger 'air, and freckles on 'er nose; I stops the cart and walks across to see.
"There ain't no bottles 'ere," says she, "since father took the pledge," "No bottles 'ere," says I, "I'd like to know What right 'ave you to stick your 'ead outside the winder ledge, If you 'aven't got no Empty Bottle-O!" I sometimes gives the 'orse a spell, and then the push and me We takes a little trip to Chowder Bay.
Oh! ain't it nice the 'ole day long a-gazin' at the sea And a-hidin' of the tanglefoot away.
But when the booze gits 'old of us, and fellows starts to "scrap", There's some what likes blue-metal for to throw: But as for me, I always says for layin' out a "trap" There's nothing like an Empty Bottle-O!

 The Fire at Tranter Sweatley's

THEY had long met o' Zundays--her true love and she--
And at junketings, maypoles, and flings;
But she bode wi' a thirtover uncle, and he
Swore by noon and by night that her goodman should be
Naibor Sweatley--a gaffer oft weak at the knee
From taking o' sommat more cheerful than tea--
Who tranted, and moved people's things.
She cried, "O pray pity me!" Nought would he hear; Then with wild rainy eyes she obeyed, She chid when her Love was for clinking off wi' her.
The pa'son was told, as the season drew near To throw over pu'pit the names of the pe?ir As fitting one flesh to be made.
The wedding-day dawned and the morning drew on; The couple stood bridegroom and bride; The evening was passed, and when midnight had gone The folks horned out, "God save the King," and anon The two home-along gloomily hied.
The lover Tim Tankens mourned heart-sick and drear To be thus of his darling deprived: He roamed in the dark ath'art field, mound, and mere, And, a'most without knowing it, found himself near The house of the tranter, and now of his Dear, Where the lantern-light showed 'em arrived.
The bride sought her cham'er so calm and so pale That a Northern had thought her resigned; But to eyes that had seen her in tide-times of weal, Like the white cloud o' smoke, the red battlefield's vail, That look spak' of havoc behind.
The bridegroom yet laitered a beaker to drain, Then reeled to the linhay for more, When the candle-snoff kindled some chaff from his grain-- Flames spread, and red vlankers, wi' might and wi' main, And round beams, thatch, and chimley-tun roar.
Young Tim away yond, rafted up by the light, Through brimble and underwood tears, Till he comes to the orchet, when crooping thereright In the lewth of a codlin-tree, bivering wi' fright, Wi' on'y her night-rail to screen her from sight, His lonesome young Barbree appears.
Her cwold little figure half-naked he views Played about by the frolicsome breeze, Her light-tripping totties, her ten little tooes, All bare and besprinkled wi' Fall's chilly dews, While her great gallied eyes, through her hair hanging loose, Sheened as stars through a tardle o' trees.
She eyed en; and, as when a weir-hatch is drawn, Her tears, penned by terror afore, With a rushing of sobs in a shower were strawn, Till her power to pour 'em seemed wasted and gone From the heft o' misfortune she bore.
"O Tim, my own Tim I must call 'ee--I will! All the world ha' turned round on me so! Can you help her who loved 'ee, though acting so ill? Can you pity her misery--feel for her still? When worse than her body so quivering and chill Is her heart in its winter o' woe! "I think I mid almost ha' borne it," she said, "Had my griefs one by one come to hand; But O, to be slave to thik husbird for bread, And then, upon top o' that, driven to wed, And then, upon top o' that, burnt out o' bed, Is more than my nater can stand!" Tim's soul like a lion 'ithin en outsprung-- (Tim had a great soul when his feelings were wrung)-- "Feel for 'ee, dear Barbree?" he cried; And his warm working-jacket about her he flung, Made a back, horsed her up, till behind him she clung Like a chiel on a gipsy, her figure uphung By the sleeves that around her he tied.
Over piggeries, and mixens, and apples, and hay, They lumpered straight into the night; And finding bylong where a halter-path lay, At dawn reached Tim's house, on'y seen on their way By a naibor or two who were up wi' the day; But they gathered no clue to the sight.
Then tender Tim Tankens he searched here and there For some garment to clothe her fair skin; But though he had breeches and waistcoats to spare, He had nothing quite seemly for Barbree to wear, Who, half shrammed to death, stood and cried on a chair At the caddle she found herself in.
There was one thing to do, and that one thing he did, He lent her some clouts of his own, And she took 'em perforce; and while in 'em she slid, Tim turned to the winder, as modesty bid, Thinking, "O that the picter my duty keeps hid To the sight o' my eyes mid be shown!" In the tallet he stowed her; there huddied she lay, Shortening sleeves, legs, and tails to her limbs; But most o' the time in a mortal bad way, Well knowing that there'd be the divel to pay If 'twere found that, instead o' the elements' prey, She was living in lodgings at Tim's.
"Where's the tranter?" said men and boys; "where can er be?" "Where's the tranter?" said Barbree alone.
"Where on e'th is the tranter?" said everybod-y: They sifted the dust of his perished roof-tree, And all they could find was a bone.
Then the uncle cried, "Lord, pray have mercy on me!" And in terror began to repent.
But before 'twas complete, and till sure she was free, Barbree drew up her loft-ladder, tight turned her key-- Tim bringing up breakfast and dinner and tea-- Till the news of her hiding got vent.
Then followed the custom-kept rout, shout, and flare Of a skimmington-ride through the naiborhood, ere Folk had proof o' wold Sweatley's decay.
Whereupon decent people all stood in a stare, Saying Tim and his lodger should risk it, and pair: So he took her to church.
An' some laughing lads there Cried to Tim, "After Sweatley!" She said, "I declare I stand as a maiden to-day!"

The Grocery

 "Hullo, Alice!"
"Hullo, Leon!"
"Say, Alice, gi' me a couple
O' them two for five cigars,
Will yer?"
"Where's your nickel?"
"My! Ain't you close!
Can't trust a feller, can yer.
" "Trust you! Why What you owe this store Would set you up in business.
I can't think why Father 'lows it.
" "Yer Father's a sight more neighbourly Than you be.
That's a fact.
Besides, he knows I got a vote.
" "A vote! Oh, yes, you got a vote! A lot o' good the Senate'll be to Father When all his bank account Has run away in credits.
There's your cigars, If you can relish smokin' With all you owe us standin'.
" "I dunno as that makes 'em taste any diff'rent.
You ain't fair to me, Alice, 'deed you ain't.
I work when anythin's doin'.
I'll get a carpenterin' job next Summer sure.
Cleve was tellin' me to-day he'd take me on come Spring.
" "Come Spring, and this December! I've no patience with you, Leon, Shilly-shallyin' the way you do.
Here, lift over them crates o' oranges I wanter fix 'em in the winder.
" "It riles yer, don't it, me not havin' work.
You pepper up about it somethin' good.
You pick an' pick, and that don't help a mite.
Say, Alice, do come in out o' that winder.
Th' oranges c'n wait, An' I don't like talkin' to yer back.
" "Don't you! Well, you'd better make the best o' what you can git.
Maybe you won't have my back to talk to soon.
They look good in pyramids with the 'lectric light on 'em, Don't they? Now hand me them bananas An' I'll string 'em right acrost.
" "What do yer mean 'Bout me not havin' you to talk to? Are yer springin' somethin' on me?" "I don't know 'bout springin' When I'm tellin' you right out.
I'm goin' away, that's all.
" "Where? Why? What yer mean -- goin' away?" "I've took a place Down to Boston, in a candy store For the holidays.
" "Good Land, Alice, What in the Heavens fer!" "To earn some money, And to git away from here, I guess.
" "Ain't yer Father got enough? Don't he give yer proper pocket-money?" "He'd have a plenty, if you folks paid him.
" "He's rich I tell yer.
I never figured he'd be close with you.
" "Oh, he ain't.
Not close.
That ain't why.
But I must git away from here.

How long d' you cal'late You'll be gone?" "Maybe for always.

The Recumbent Posture

 The day after Christmas, young Albert
Were what's called, confined to his bed,
With a tight kind of pain in his stummick
And a light feeling up in his head.
His parents were all in a fluster When they saw little lad were so sick, They said, 'Put out your tongue!', When they'd seen it They said, 'Put it back again - quick!' Ma made him a basin of gruel, But that were a move for the worse; Though the little lad tried hard to eat it, At the finish he did the reverse.
The pain showed no signs of abating, So at last they got Doctor to call.
He said it were in the ab-domain And not in the stummick at all.
He sent up a bottle of physick, With instructions on t' label to say, 'To be taken in a recumbent posture, One teaspoon, three times a day.
' As Ma stood there reading the label Pa started to fidget about.
He said 'Get a teaspoon and dose him, Before he gets better without.
' 'I can manage the teaspoon' said Mother A look of distress on her face.
'It's this 'ere recumbent posture.

I haven't got one in the place.
' Said Pa, 'What about Mrs Lupton?.
.
Next door 'ere - you'd better ask her; A woman who's buried three husbands Is sure to have one of them there.
' So they went round and asked Mrs Lupton, 'Aye, I know what you mean,' she replied, 'I 'ad one on order for 'Orace, But poor dear got impatient and died.
' She said, 'You'd best try the Co-Op shop, They'll have one in stock I dare say; ' Fact I think I saw one in the winder Last time I was passing that way.
' So round they went to the Co-Op shop, And at the counter for household supplies; Pa asked for a recumbent posture And the shopman said 'Yes sir.

what size?' Said Ma, 'It's for our little Albert, I don't know what size he would use, I know he takes thirteen in collars, And sixes, four fittings, in shoes.
' 'If it's little lads size as you're wanting,' Said the shopman, 'I'm sorry to say, We nobbut had one in the building, And that one were sold yesterday.
' He sent them across to a tin-smith, Who said, 'I know what you've in mind; If you'll draw me a pattern, I'll make one.
' But Pa'd left his pencil behind.
They tried every shop they could think of, They walked for two hours by the clock, And though most places reckoned to keep them, They'd none of them got one in stock.
The last place they tried was the chemist, He looked at them both with a frown.
And told them a recumbent posture Were Latin, and meant lying down.
It means 'Lying down' - put in Latin Said Father, 'That's just what I thowt.
' Then he picked up a side-glance from Mother, And pretended he hadn't said nowt.
'They're not dosing my lad with Latin.
' Said Mother, her face looking grim, 'Just plain Castor Oil's all he's getting And I'm leaving the posture to him.

George and the Dragon

 I'll tell you the tale of an old country pub 
As fancied itself up to date,
It had the word " Garage" wrote on t' stable door 
And a petrol pump outside the gate.
The " George and the Dragon" were t' name of the pub, And it stood in a spot wild and bleak, Where nowt ever seemed to be passing that way Except Carrier's cart once a week.
The Carrier's cart were a sturdy old Ford And its driver were known as " Old Joe He had passed pub each week but he'd never been in, It's name even he didn't know.
One cold winter night, about quarter to one, He were driving home over the moor, And had just reached the pub, when his engine stopped dead A thing it had ne'er done before.
He lifted the bonnet and fiddled around And gave her a bit of a crank; When he looked at his petrol he found what were wrong, There wasn't a drop in the tank.
He had eight miles to go and 'twere starting to rain, And he thought he were there for the night, Till he saw the word " Garage" wrote on t' stable door; Then he said, " Lizzie, Lass.

we're all right.
" He went up to t' pub and he hammered at door Till a voice up above said " Hello!" It were t' Publican's Wife-she said, "Now what's to do?", "I've run out of petrol," said Joe.
She said " Who are you? " He said " Carrier Joe.
" " Oh, so that's who it is," she replied You've been passing this door now for close on ten years And never once set foot inside.
" "A nice time of night to come knocking folks up, She continued.
"Away with your truck, " You'd best get your petrol where you buy your beer.

" You only come here when you re stuck.
" Said Joe, "Aye, I'll go if you'll sell me some fuel, "I can't start my engine without.
"I'm willing to pay.
" but she told him to go Where he'd get his fuel for nowt.
"Coom, coom, Lass!" said Joe, conci-latory like, "Let bygones be bygones, and when I come round next time I'll look in.
" She said, "Oh, Well, your petrol can wait until then.
" With these few remarks th' old girl took in her head And slammed winder to in his face; He took a look round and for t' very first time He noticed the name of the place.
He picked up some pebbles he found in the road And tossed them against winder pane, And before very long lattice opened above And out came the old girl again.
What d'ye want? " she enquired.
And " Not you," Joe replied, For this treatment had fair raised his gorge "I see George and t' Dragon's the name on the house, "And I'd just like a word now with George.
