Rugby Chapel

 Coldly, sadly descends
The autumn-evening. The field
Strewn with its dank yellow drifts
Of wither'd leaves, and the elms,
Fade into dimness apace,
Silent;--hardly a shout
From a few boys late at their play!
The lights come out in the street,
In the school-room windows;--but cold,
Solemn, unlighted, austere,
Through the gathering darkness, arise
The chapel-walls, in whose bound
Thou, my father! art laid.

There thou dost lie, in the gloom
Of the autumn evening. But ah!
That word, gloom, to my mind
Brings thee back, in the light
Of thy radiant vigour, again;
In the gloom of November we pass'd
Days not dark at thy side;
Seasons impair'd not the ray
Of thy buoyant cheerfulness clear.
Such thou wast! and I stand
In the autumn evening, and think
Of bygone autumns with thee.

Fifteen years have gone round
Since thou arosest to tread,
In the summer-morning, the road
Of death, at a call unforeseen,
Sudden. For fifteen years,
We who till then in thy shade
Rested as under the boughs
Of a mighty oak, have endured
Sunshine and rain as we might,
Bare, unshaded, alone,
Lacking the shelter of thee.

O strong soul, by what shore
Tarriest thou now? For that force,
Surely, has not been left vain!

What is the course of the life
Of mortal men on the earth?--

The Gods Of Greece

 Ye in the age gone by,
Who ruled the world--a world how lovely then!--
And guided still the steps of happy men
In the light leading-strings of careless joy!
Ah, flourished then your service of delight!
How different, oh, how different, in the day
When thy sweet fanes with many a wreath were bright,
O Venus Amathusia!

Then, through a veil of dreams
Woven by song, truth's youthful beauty glowed,
And life's redundant and rejoicing streams
Gave to the soulless, soul--where'r they flowed
Man gifted nature with divinity
To lift and link her to the breast of love;
All things betrayed to the initiate eye
The track of gods above!

Where lifeless--fixed afar,
A flaming ball to our dull sense is given,
Phoebus Apollo, in his golden car,
In silent glory swept the fields of heaven!
On yonder hill the Oread was adored,
In yonder tree the Dryad held her home;
And from her urn the gentle Naiad poured

Yon bay, chaste Daphne wreathed,

And through those groves wailed the sweet Philomel,

Her plodding round, and, by the leaden weights,
The slavish motion keeps.

To-morrow to receive
New life, she digs her proper grave to-day;
And icy moons with weary sameness weave
From their own light their fulness and decay.
Home to the poet's land the gods are flown,
Light use in them that later world discerns,
Which, the diviner leading-strings outgrown,
On its own axle turns.

Home! and with them are gone
The hues they gazed on and the tones they heard;
Life's beauty and life's melody:--alone
Broods o'er the desolate void, the lifeless word;
Yet rescued from time's deluge, still they throng
Unseen the Pindus they were wont to cherish:
All, that which gains immortal life in song,

I Hardly Remember

 I hardly remember your voice, but the pain of you
floats in some remote current of my blood.
I carry you in my depths, trapped in the sludge
like one of those corpses the sea refuses to give up.

It was a spoiled remnant of the South. A beach
without fishing boats, where the sun was for sale.
A stretch of shore, now a jungle of lights and languages
that grudgingly offered, defeated, its obligation of sand.

The night of that day punished us at its whim.
I held you so close I could barely see you.
Autumn was brandishing guffaws and dancebands
and the sea tore at the pleasure-boats in a frenzy.

Your hand balanced, with its steady heat,
the wavering tepidness of alcohol. The gardens
came at me from far away through your skirt.
My high-tide mark rose to the level of your breasts.

Carpets, like tentacles, wriggling down to the strand,
attracted passers-by to the mouth of the clamor.
With lights and curtains, above the tedium
the bedrooms murmured in the grand hotels.

There are dark moments when our ballast gives out
from so much banging around. Moments, or centuries,
when the flesh revels in its nakedness and reels
to its own destruction, sucking the life from itself.

I groped around me, trying on your embrace,
but love was not where your embrace was.
I felt your hands stroking that physical ache
but a great nothing went before your hands.

I searched, down the length of your soulless surrender,
for a calm bay where I could cast a net,
yearning to hear a trace of the vendor's voice
still wet with the glimmer of the flapping minnows.

It was a spoiled remnant of the South. The aroma
of muscatel was tainted with whiskey breath.
I carry that dead embrace inside me yet
like a foreign object the flesh tries to reject.

Senlin: His Cloudy Destiny

Senlin sat before us and we heard him. 
He smoked his pipe before us and we saw him. 
Was he small, with reddish hair, 
Did he light his pipe with a meditative stare 
And a twinkling flame reflected in blue eyes? 
'I am alone': said Senlin; 'in a forest of leaves 
The single leaf that creeps and falls. 
The single blade of grass in a desert of grass 
That none foresaw and none recalls. 
The single shell that a green wave shatters 
In tiny specks of whiteness on brown sands . . . 
How shall you understand me with your hearts, 
Who cannot reach me with your hands? . . .'

The city dissolves about us, and its walls 
Are the sands beside a sea. 
We plunge in a chaos of dunes, white waves before us 
Crash on kelp tumultuously, 
Gulls wheel over foam, the clouds blow tattered, 
The sun is swallowed . . . Has Senlin become a shore? 
Is Senlin a grain of sand beneath our footsteps, 
A speck of shell upon which waves will roar? . . . 
Senlin! we cry . . . Senlin! again . . . no answer, 
Only the crash of sea on a shell-white shore.

Yet, we would say, this is no shore at all, 
But a small bright room with lamplight on the wall; 
And the familiar chair 
Where Senlin sat, with lamplight on his hair.

Senlin, alone before us, played a music. 
Was it himself he played? . . . We sat and listened, 
Perplexed and pleased and tired. 
'Listen!' he said, 'and you will learn a secret-- 
Though it is not the secret you desired. 
I have not found a meaning that will praise you! 
Out of the heart of silence comes this music, 
Quietly speaks and dies. 
Look! there is one white star above black houses! 
And a tiny man who climbs toward the skies! 
Where does he walk to? What does he leave behind him? 
What was his foolish name? 
What did he stop to say, before he left you 
As simply as he came? 
"Death?" did it sound like, "love and god, and laughter, 
Sunlight, and work, and pain . . .?" 
No--it appears to me that these were symbols 
Of simple truths he found no way to explain. 
He spoke, but found you could not understand him-- 
You were alone, and he was alone.

"He sought to touch you, and found he could not reach you,-- 
He sought to understand you, and could not hear you. 
And so this music, which I play before you,-- 
Does it mean only what it seems to mean? 
Or is it a dance of foolish waves in sunlight 
Above a desperate depth of things unseen? 
Listen! Do you not hear the singing voices 
Out of the darkness of this sea? 
But no: you cannot hear them; for if you heard them 
You would have heard and captured me. 
Yet I am here, talking of laughter. 
Laughter and love and work and god; 
As I shall talk of these same things hereafter 
In wave and sod. 
Walk on a hill and call me: "Senlin! . . . Senlin! . . ." 
Will I not answer you as clearly as now? 
Listen to rain, and you will hear me speaking. 
Look for my heart in the breaking of a bough . . .'

Senlin stood before us in the sunlight, 
And laughed, and walked away. 
Did no one see him leaving the doors of the city, 
Looking behind him, as if he wished to stay? 
Has no one, in the forests of the evening, 
Heard the sad horn of Senlin slowly blown? 
For somewhere, in the worlds-in-worlds about us, 
He changes still, unfriended and alone. 
Is he the star on which we walk at daybreak, 
The light that blinds our eyes? 
'Senlin!' we cry. 'Senlin!' again . . . no answer: 
Only the soulless brilliance of blue skies.

Yet we would say, this was no man at all, 
But a dream we dreamed, and vividly recall; 
And we are mad to walk in wind and rain 
Hoping to find, somewhere, that dream again.

The Pencil Seller

 A pencil, sir; a penny -- won't you buy?
I'm cold and wet and tired, a sorry plight;
Don't turn your back, sir; take one just to try;
I haven't made a single sale to-night.
Oh, thank you, sir; but take the pencil too;
I'm not a beggar, I'm a business man.
Pencils I deal in, red and black and blue;
It's hard, but still I do the best I can.
Most days I make enough to pay for bread,
A cup o' coffee, stretching room at night.
One needs so little -- to be warm and fed,
A hole to kennel in -- oh, one's all right . . .

Excuse me, you're a painter, are you not?
I saw you looking at that dealer's show,
The croûtes he has for sale, a shabby lot --
What do I know of Art? What do I know . . .
Well, look! That David Strong so well displayed,
"White Sorcery" it's called, all gossamer,
And pale moon-magic and a dancing maid
(You like the little elfin face of her?) --
That's good; but still, the picture as a whole,
The values, -- Pah! He never painted worse;
Perhaps because his fire was lacking coal,
His cupboard bare, no money in his purse.
Perhaps . . . they say he labored hard and long,
And see now, in the harvest of his fame,
When round his pictures people gape and throng,
A scurvy dealer sells this on his name.
A wretched rag, wrung out of want and woe;
A soulless daub, not David Strong a bit,
Unworthy of his art. . . . How should I know?
How should I know? I'm Strong -- I painted it.

There now, I didn't mean to let that out.
It came in spite of me -- aye, stare and stare.
You think I'm lying, crazy, drunk, no doubt --
Think what you like, it's neither here nor there.
It's hard to tell so terrible a truth,
To gain to glory, yet be such as I.
It's true; that picture's mine, done in my youth,
Up in a garret near the Paris sky.
The child's my daughter; aye, she posed for me.
That's why I come and sit here every night.
The painting's bad, but still -- oh, still I see
Her little face all laughing in the light.
So now you understand. -- I live in fear
Lest one like you should carry it away;
A poor, pot-boiling thing, but oh, how dear!
"Don't let them buy it, pitying God!" I pray!
And hark ye, sir -- sometimes my brain's awhirl.
Some night I'll crash into that window pane
And snatch my picture back, my little girl,
And run and run. . . .

I'm talking wild again;
A crab can't run. I'm crippled, withered, lame,
Palsied, as good as dead all down one side.
No warning had I when the evil came:
It struck me down in all my strength and pride.
Triumph was mine, I thrilled with perfect power;
Honor was mine, Fame's laurel touched my brow;
Glory was mine -- within a little hour
I was a god and . . . what you find me now.

My child, that little, laughing girl you see,
She was my nurse for all ten weary years;
Her joy, her hope, her youth she gave for me;
Her very smiles were masks to hide her tears.
And I, my precious art, so rich, so rare,
Lost, lost to me -- what could my heart but break!
Oh, as I lay and wrestled with despair,
I would have killed myself but for her sake. . . .

By luck I had some pictures I could sell,
And so we fought the wolf back from the door;
She painted too, aye, wonderfully well.
We often dreamed of brighter days in store.
And then quite suddenly she seemed to fail;
I saw the shadows darken round her eyes.
So tired she was, so sorrowful, so pale,
And oh, there came a day she could not rise.
The doctor looked at her; he shook his head,
And spoke of wine and grapes and Southern air:
"If you can get her out of this," he said,
"She'll have a fighting chance with proper care."

"With proper care!" When he had gone away,
I sat there, trembling, twitching, dazed with grief.
Under my old and ragged coat she lay,
Our room was bare and cold beyond belief.
"Maybe," I thought, "I still can paint a bit,
Some lilies, landscape, anything at all."
Alas! My brush, I could not steady it.
Down from my fumbling hand I let it fall.
"With proper care" -- how could I give her that,
Half of me dead? . . . I crawled down to the street.
Cowering beside the wall, I held my hat
And begged of every one I chanced to meet.
I got some pennies, bought her milk and bread,
And so I fought to keep the Doom away;
And yet I saw with agony of dread
My dear one sinking, sinking day by day.
And then I was awakened in the night:
"Please take my hands, I'm cold," I heard her sigh;
And soft she whispered, as she held me tight:
"Oh daddy, we've been happy, you and I!"
I do not think she suffered any pain,
She breathed so quietly . . . but though I tried,
I could not warm her little hands again:
And so there in the icy dark she died. . . .
The dawn came groping in with fingers gray
And touched me, sitting silent as a stone;
I kissed those piteous lips, as cold as clay --
I did not cry, I did not even moan.
At last I rose, groped down the narrow stair;
An evil fog was oozing from the sky;
Half-crazed I stumbled on, I knew not where,
Like phantoms were the folks that passed me by.
How long I wandered thus I do not know,
But suddenly I halted, stood stock-still --
Beside a door that spilled a golden glow
I saw a name, my name, upon a bill.
"A Sale of Famous Pictures," so it read,
"A Notable Collection, each a gem,
Distinguished Works of Art by painters dead."
The folks were going in, I followed them.
I stood upon the outskirts of the crowd,
I only hoped that none might notice me.
Soon, soon I heard them call my name aloud:
"A `David Strong', his Fete in Brittany."
(A brave big picture that, the best I've done,
It glowed and kindled half the hall away,
With all its memories of sea and sun,
Of pipe and bowl, of joyous work and play.
I saw the sardine nets blue as the sky,
I saw the nut-brown fisher-boats put out.)
"Five hundred pounds!" rapped out a voice near by;
"Six hundred!" "Seven!" "Eight!" And then a shout:
"A thousand pounds!" Oh, how I thrilled to hear!
Oh, how the bids went up by leaps, by bounds!
And then a silence; then the auctioneer:
"It's going! Going! Gone! Three thousand pounds!"
Three thousand pounds! A frenzy leapt in me.
"That picture's mine," I cried; "I'm David Strong.
I painted it, this famished wretch you see;
I did it, I, and sold it for a song.
And in a garret three small hours ago
My daughter died for want of Christian care.
Look, look at me! . . . Is it to mock my woe
You pay three thousand for my picture there?" . . .

O God! I stumbled blindly from the hall;
The city crashed on me, the fiendish sounds
Of cruelty and strife, but over all
"Three thousand pounds!" I heard; "Three thousand pounds!"

There, that's my story, sir; it isn't gay.
Tales of the Poor are never very bright . . .
You'll look for me next time you pass this way . . .

 The room is wrapped in shade save where there fall 
 Some twilight rays that creep along the floor, 
 And show the fisher's nets upon the wall. 
 
 In the dim corner, from the oaken chest, 
 A few white dishes glimmer; through the shade 
 Stands a tall bed with dusky curtains dressed, 
 And a rough mattress at its side is laid. 
 
 Five children on the long low mattress lie— 
 A nest of little souls, it heaves with dreams; 
 In the high chimney the last embers die, 
 And redden the dark room with crimson gleams. 
 
 The mother kneels and thinks, and pale with fear, 
 She prays alone, hearing the billows shout: 
 While to wild winds, to rocks, to midnight drear, 
 The ominous old ocean sobs without. 
 
 Poor wives of fishers! Ah! 'tis sad to say, 
 Our sons, our husbands, all that we love best, 
 Our hearts, our souls, are on those waves away, 
 Those ravening wolves that know not ruth, nor rest. 
 
 Think how they sport with these beloved forms; 
 And how the clarion-blowing wind unties 
 Above their heads the tresses of the storms: 
 Perchance even now the child, the husband, dies. 
 
 For we can never tell where they may be 
 Who, to make head against the tide and gale, 
 Between them and the starless, soulless sea 
 Have but one bit of plank, with one poor sail. 
 
 Terrible fear! We seek the pebbly shore, 
 Cry to the rising billows, "Bring them home." 
 Alas! what answer gives their troubled roar, 
 To the dark thought that haunts us as we roam. 
 
 Janet is sad: her husband is alone, 
 Wrapped in the black shroud of this bitter night: 
 
 His children are so little, there is none 
 To give him aid. "Were they but old, they might." 
 Ah, mother! when they too are on the main, 
 How wilt thou weep: "Would they were young again!" 
 
 She takes his lantern—'tis his hour at last 
 She will go forth, and see if the day breaks, 
 And if his signal-fire be at the mast; 
 Ah, no—not yet—no breath of morning wakes. 
 
 No line of light o'er the dark water lies; 
 It rains, it rains, how black is rain at morn: 
 The day comes trembling, and the young dawn cries— 
 Cries like a baby fearing to be born. 
 
 Sudden her humane eyes that peer and watch 
 Through the deep shade, a mouldering dwelling find, 
 No light within—the thin door shakes—the thatch 
 O'er the green walls is twisted of the wind, 
 
 Yellow, and dirty, as a swollen rill, 
 "Ah, me," she saith, "here does that widow dwell; 
 Few days ago my good man left her ill: 
 I will go in and see if all be well." 
 
 She strikes the door, she listens, none replies, 
 And Janet shudders. "Husbandless, alone, 
 And with two children—they have scant supplies. 
 Good neighbor! She sleeps heavy as a stone." 
 
 She calls again, she knocks, 'tis silence still; 
 No sound—no answer—suddenly the door, 
 As if the senseless creature felt some thrill 
 Of pity, turned—and open lay before. 
 
 She entered, and her lantern lighted all 
 The house so still, but for the rude waves' din. 
 Through the thin roof the plashing rain-drops fall, 
 But something terrible is couched within.

Twin idols

 There are two phrases, you must know,
So potent (yet so small)
That wheresoe'er a man may go
He needs none else at all;
No servile guide to lead the way
Nor lackey at his heel,
If he be learned enough to say
"Comme bien" and "Wie viel."

The sleek, pomaded Parleyvoo
Will air his sweetest airs
And quote the highest rates when you
"Comme bien" for his wares;
And, though the German stolid be,
His so-called heart of steel
Becomes as soft as wax when he
Detects the words "Wie viel."

Go, search the boulevards and rues
From Havre to Marseilles--
You'll find all eloquence you use
Except "Comme bien" fails;
Or in the country auf der Rhine
Essay a business deal
And all your art is good fuhr nein
Beyond the point--"Wie viel."

It matters not what game or prey
Attracts your greedy eyes--
You must pursue the good old way
If you would win the prize;
It is to get a titled mate
All run down at the heel,
If you inquire of stock effete,
"Comme bien" or "Wie viel."

So he is wise who envieth not
A wealth of foreign speech,
Since with two phrases may be got
Whatever's in his reach;
For Europe is a soulless shrine
In which all classes kneel
Before twin idols, deemed divine--
"Comme bien" and "Wie viel."

The Ideals

 And wilt thou, faithless one, then, leave me,
With all thy magic phantasy,--
With all the thoughts that joy or grieve me,
Wilt thou with all forever fly?
Can naught delay thine onward motion,
Thou golden time of life's young dream?
In vain! eternity's wide ocean
Ceaselessly drowns thy rolling stream.

The glorious suns my youth enchanting
Have set in never-ending night;
Those blest ideals now are wanting
That swelled my heart with mad delight.
The offspring of my dream hath perished,
My faith in being passed away;
The godlike hopes that once I cherish
Are now reality's sad prey.

As once Pygmalion, fondly yearning,
Embraced the statue formed by him,
Till the cold marble's cheeks were burning,
And life diffused through every limb,
So I, with youthful passion fired,
My longing arms round Nature threw,
Till, clinging to my breast inspired,
She 'gan to breathe, to kindle too.

And all my fiery ardor proving,
Though mute, her tale she soon could tell,
Returned each kiss I gave her loving,
The throbbings of my heart read well.
Then living seemed each tree, each flower,
Then sweetly sang the waterfall,
And e'en the soulless in that hour

For then a circling world was bursting

This world, how wondrous great I deemed it,

How happy, winged by courage daring,
The youth life's mazy path first pressed--

The dimmest star in air's dominion

I saw Fame's sacred wreath adorning
The brows of an unworthy crew;
And, ah! how soon Love's happy morning,
When spring had vanished, vanished too!
More silent yet, and yet more weary,
Became the desert path I trod;
And even hope a glimmer dreary
Scarce cast upon the gloomy road.

Of all that train, so bright with gladness,
Oh, who is faithful to the end?
Who now will seek to cheer my sadness,
And to the grave my steps attend?
Thou, Friendship, of all guides the fairest,
Who gently healest every wound;
Who all life's heavy burdens sharest,
Thou, whom I early sought and found!

Employment too, thy loving neighbor,
Who quells the bosom's rising storms;
Who ne'er grows weary of her labor,
And ne'er destroys, though slow she forms;
Who, though but grains of sand she places

The Hyaenas

 After the burial-parties leave
 And the baffled kites have fled;
The wise hyaenas come out at eve
 To take account of our dead.

How he died and why he died
 Troubles them not a whit.
They snout the bushes and stones aside
 And dig till they come to it.

They are only resolute they shall eat
 That they and their mates may thrive,
And they know that the dead are safer meat
 Than the weakest thing alive.

(For a goat may butt, and a worm may sting,
 And a child will sometimes stand;
But a poor dead soldier of the King
 Can never lift a hand.)

They whoop and halloo and scatter the dirt
 Until their tushes white
 Take good hold in the army shirt,
 And tug the corpse to light,

And the pitiful face is shewn again
 For an instant ere they close;
But it is not discovered to living men --
 Only to God and to those

Who, being soulless, are free from shame,
 Whatever meat they may find.
Nor do they defile the dead man's name --
 That is reserved for his kind.
