In the Home Stretch

 SHE stood against the kitchen sink, and looked
Over the sink out through a dusty window
At weeds the water from the sink made tall.
She wore her cape; her hat was in her hand.
Behind her was confusion in the room, Of chairs turned upside down to sit like people In other chairs, and something, come to look, For every room a house has—parlor, bed-room, And dining-room—thrown pell-mell in the kitchen.
And now and then a smudged, infernal face Looked in a door behind her and addressed Her back.
She always answered without turning.
“Where will I put this walnut bureau, lady?” “Put it on top of something that’s on top Of something else,” she laughed.
“Oh, put it where You can to-night, and go.
It’s almost dark; You must be getting started back to town.
” Another blackened face thrust in and looked And smiled, and when she did not turn, spoke gently, “What are you seeing out the window, lady?” “Never was I beladied so before.
Would evidence of having been called lady More than so many times make me a lady In common law, I wonder.
” “But I ask, What are you seeing out the window, lady?” “What I’ll be seeing more of in the years To come as here I stand and go the round Of many plates with towels many times.
” “And what is that? You only put me off.

A cannon-mouth-like hole was in the wall, To which they set it true by eye; and then Came up the jointed stovepipe in their hands, So much too light and airy for their strength It almost seemed to come ballooning up, Slipping from clumsy clutches toward the ceiling.
“A fit!” said one, and banged a stovepipe shoulder.
“It’s good luck when you move in to begin With good luck with your stovepipe.

A Boston Ballad 1854

 TO get betimes in Boston town, I rose this morning early; 
Here’s a good place at the corner—I must stand and see the show.
Clear the way there, Jonathan! Way for the President’s marshal! Way for the government cannon! Way for the Federal foot and dragoons—and the apparitions copiously tumbling.
I love to look on the stars and stripes—I hope the fifes will play Yankee Doodle.
How bright shine the cutlasses of the foremost troops! Every man holds his revolver, marching stiff through Boston town.
A fog follows—antiques of the same come limping, Some appear wooden-legged, and some appear bandaged and bloodless.
Why this is indeed a show! It has called the dead out of the earth! The old grave-yards of the hills have hurried to see! Phantoms! phantoms countless by flank and rear! Cock’d hats of mothy mould! crutches made of mist! Arms in slings! old men leaning on young men’s shoulders! What troubles you, Yankee phantoms? What is all this chattering of bare gums? Does the ague convulse your limbs? Do you mistake your crutches for fire-locks, and level them? If you blind your eyes with tears, you will not see the President’s marshal; If you groan such groans, you might balk the government cannon.
For shame, old maniacs! Bring down those toss’d arms, and let your white hair be; Here gape your great grand-sons—their wives gaze at them from the windows, See how well dress’d—see how orderly they conduct themselves.
Worse and worse! Can’t you stand it? Are you retreating? Is this hour with the living too dead for you? Retreat then! Pell-mell! To your graves! Back! back to the hills, old limpers! I do not think you belong here, anyhow.
But there is one thing that belongs here—shall I tell you what it is, gentlemen of Boston? I will whisper it to the Mayor—he shall send a committee to England; They shall get a grant from the Parliament, go with a cart to the royal vault—haste! Dig out King George’s coffin, unwrap him quick from the grave-clothes, box up his bones for a journey; Find a swift Yankee clipper—here is freight for you, black-bellied clipper, Up with your anchor! shake out your sails! steer straight toward Boston bay.
Now call for the President’s marshal again, bring out the government cannon, Fetch home the roarers from Congress, make another procession, guard it with foot and dragoons.
This centre-piece for them: Look! all orderly citizens—look from the windows, women! The committee open the box, set up the regal ribs, glue those that will not stay, Clap the skull on top of the ribs, and clap a crown on top of the skull.
You have got your revenge, old buster! The crown is come to its own, and more than its own.
Stick your hands in your pockets, Jonathan—you are a made man from this day; You are mighty cute—and here is one of your bargains.

The Red Lacquer Music-Stand

 A music-stand of crimson lacquer, long since brought
In some fast clipper-ship from China, quaintly wrought
With bossed and carven flowers and fruits in blackening gold,
The slender shaft all twined about and thickly scrolled
With vine leaves and young twisted tendrils, whirling, curling,
Flinging their new shoots over the four wings, and swirling
Out on the three wide feet in golden lumps and streams;
Petals and apples in high relief, and where the seams
Are worn with handling, through the polished crimson sheen,
Long streaks of black, the under lacquer, shine out clean.
Four desks, adjustable, to suit the heights of players Sitting to viols or standing up to sing, four layers Of music to serve every instrument, are there, And on the apex a large flat-topped golden pear.
It burns in red and yellow, dusty, smouldering lights, When the sun flares the old barn-chamber with its flights And skips upon the crystal knobs of dim sideboards, Legless and mouldy, and hops, glint to glint, on hoards Of scythes, and spades, and dinner-horns, so the old tools Are little candles throwing brightness round in pools.
With Oriental splendour, red and gold, the dust Covering its flames like smoke and thinning as a gust Of brighter sunshine makes the colours leap and range, The strange old music-stand seems to strike out and change; To stroke and tear the darkness with sharp golden claws; To dart a forked, vermilion tongue from open jaws; To puff out bitter smoke which chokes the sun; and fade Back to a still, faint outline obliterate in shade.
Creeping up the ladder into the loft, the Boy Stands watching, very still, prickly and hot with joy.
He sees the dusty sun-mote slit by streaks of red, He sees it split and stream, and all about his head Spikes and spears of gold are licking, pricking, flicking, Scratching against the walls and furniture, and nicking The darkness into sparks, chipping away the gloom.
The Boy's nose smarts with the pungence in the room.
The wind pushes an elm branch from before the door And the sun widens out all along the floor, Filling the barn-chamber with white, straightforward light, So not one blurred outline can tease the mind to fright.
"O All ye Works of the Lord, Bless ye the Lord; Praise Him, and Magnify Him for ever.
O let the Earth Bless the Lord; Yea, let it Praise Him, and Magnify Him for ever.
O ye Mountains and Hills, Bless ye the Lord; Praise Him, and Magnify Him for ever.
O All ye Green Things upon the Earth, Bless ye the Lord; Praise Him, and Magnify Him for ever.
" The Boy will praise his God on an altar builded fair, Will heap it with the Works of the Lord.
In the morning air, Spices shall burn on it, and by their pale smoke curled, Like shoots of all the Green Things, the God of this bright World Shall see the Boy's desire to pay his debt of praise.
The Boy turns round about, seeking with careful gaze An altar meet and worthy, but each table and chair Has some defect, each piece is needing some repair To perfect it; the chairs have broken legs and backs, The tables are uneven, and every highboy lacks A handle or a drawer, the desks are bruised and worn, And even a wide sofa has its cane seat torn.
Only in the gloom far in the corner there The lacquer music-stand is elegant and rare, Clear and slim of line, with its four wings outspread, The sound of old quartets, a tenuous, faint thread, Hanging and floating over it, it stands supreme -- Black, and gold, and crimson, in one twisted scheme! A candle on the bookcase feels a draught and wavers, Stippling the white-washed walls with dancing shades and quavers.
A bed-post, grown colossal, jigs about the ceiling, And shadows, strangely altered, stain the walls, revealing Eagles, and rabbits, and weird faces pulled awry, And hands which fetch and carry things incessantly.
Under the Eastern window, where the morning sun Must touch it, stands the music-stand, and on each one Of its broad platforms is a pyramid of stones, And metals, and dried flowers, and pine and hemlock cones, An oriole's nest with the four eggs neatly blown, The rattle of a rattlesnake, and three large brown Butternuts uncracked, six butterflies impaled With a green luna moth, a snake-skin freshly scaled, Some sunflower seeds, wampum, and a bloody-tooth shell, A blue jay feather, all together piled pell-mell The stand will hold no more.
The Boy with humming head Looks once again, blows out the light, and creeps to bed.
The Boy keeps solemn vigil, while outside the wind Blows gustily and clear, and slaps against the blind.
He hardly tries to sleep, so sharp his ecstasy It burns his soul to emptiness, and sets it free For adoration only, for worship.
Dedicate, His unsheathed soul is naked in its novitiate.
The hours strike below from the clock on the stair.
The Boy is a white flame suspiring in prayer.
Morning will bring the sun, the Golden Eye of Him Whose splendour must be veiled by starry cherubim, Whose Feet shimmer like crystal in the streets of Heaven.
Like an open rose the sun will stand up even, Fronting the window-sill, and when the casement glows Rose-red with the new-blown morning, then the fire which flows From the sun will fall upon the altar and ignite The spices, and his sacrifice will burn in perfumed light.
Over the music-stand the ghosts of sounds will swim, `Viols d'amore' and `hautbois' accorded to a hymn.
The Boy will see the faintest breath of angels' wings Fanning the smoke, and voices will flower through the strings.
He dares no farther vision, and with scalding eyes Waits upon the daylight and his great emprise.
The cold, grey light of dawn was whitening the wall When the Boy, fine-drawn by sleeplessness, started his ritual.
He washed, all shivering and pointed like a flame.
He threw the shutters open, and in the window-frame The morning glimmered like a tarnished Venice glass.
He took his Chinese pastilles and put them in a mass Upon the mantelpiece till he could seek a plate Worthy to hold them burning.
Alas! He had been late In thinking of this need, and now he could not find Platter or saucer rare enough to ease his mind.
The house was not astir, and he dared not go down Into the barn-chamber, lest some door should be blown And slam before the draught he made as he went out.
The light was growing yellower, and still he looked about.
A flash of almost crimson from the gilded pear Upon the music-stand, startled him waiting there.
The sun would rise and he would meet it unprepared, Labelled a fool in having missed what he had dared.
He ran across the room, took his pastilles and laid Them on the flat-topped pear, most carefully displayed To light with ease, then stood a little to one side, Focussed a burning-glass and painstakingly tried To hold it angled so the bunched and prismed rays Should leap upon each other and spring into a blaze.
Sharp as a wheeling edge of disked, carnation flame, Gem-hard and cutting upward, slowly the round sun came.
The arrowed fire caught the burning-glass and glanced, Split to a multitude of pointed spears, and lanced, A deeper, hotter flame, it took the incense pile Which welcomed it and broke into a little smile Of yellow flamelets, creeping, crackling, thrusting up, A golden, red-slashed lily in a lacquer cup.
"O ye Fire and Heat, Bless ye the Lord; Praise Him, and Magnify Him for ever.
O ye Winter and Summer, Bless ye the Lord; Praise Him, and Magnify Him for ever.

The flames drooped back and sizzled, and all his senses grown Acute by fear, the Boy grabbed the quilt from his bed And flung it over all, and then with aching head He watched the early sunshine glint on the remains Of his holy offering.
The lacquer stand had stains Ugly and charred all over, and where the golden pear Had been, a deep, black hole gaped miserably.
His dear Treasures were puffs of ashes; only the stones were there, Winking in the brightness.
The clock upon the stair Struck five, and in the kitchen someone shook a grate.
The Boy began to dress, for it was getting late.

Sly Dick

 Sharp was the frost, the wind was high 
And sparkling stars bedeckt the sky 
Sly Dick in arts of cunning skill'd, 
Whose rapine all his pockets fill'd, 
Had laid him down to take his rest

'Twas thus a dark infernal sprite A native of the blackest night, Portending mischief to devise Upon Sly Dick he cast his eyes; Then straight descends the infernal sprite, And in his chamber does alight; In visions he before him stands, And his attention he commands.
Thus spake the sprite-- hearken my friend, And to my counsels now attend.
Within the garret's spacious dome There lies a well stor'd wealthy room, Well stor'd with cloth and stockings too, Which I suppose will do for you, First from the cloth take thou a purse, For thee it will not be the worse, A noble purse rewards thy pains, A purse to hold thy filching gains; Then for the stockings let them reeve And not a scrap behind thee leave, Five bundles for a penny sell And pence to thee will come pell mell; See it be done with speed and care Thus spake the sprite and sunk in air.
When in the morn with thoughts erect Sly Dick did on his dreams reflect, Why faith, thinks he, 'tis something too, It might-- perhaps-- it might be true, I'll go and see-- away he hies, And to the garret quick he flies, Enters the room, cuts up the clothes And after that reeves up the hose; Then of the cloth he purses made, Purses to hold his filching trade.

The Sunderland Calamity

 'Twas in the town of Sunderland, and in the year of 1883,
That about 200 children were launch'd into eternity
While witnessing an entertainment in Victoria Hall,
While they, poor little innocents, to God for help did call.
The entertainment consisted of conjuring, and the ghost illusion play, Also talking waxworks, and living marionettes, and given by Mr.
Fay; And on this occasion, presents were to be given away, But in their anxiety of getting presents they wouldn't brook delay, And that is the reason why so many lives have been taken away; But I hope their precious souls are in heaven to-day.
As soon as the children began to suspect That they would lose their presents by neglect, They rush'd from the gallery, and ran down the stairs pell-mell, And trampled one another to death, according as they fell.
As soon as the catastrophe became known throughout the boro' The people's hearts were brim-full of sorrow, And parents rush'd to the Hall terror-stricken and wild, And each one was anxious to find their own child.
Oh! it must have been a most horrible sight To see the dear little children struggling with all their might To get out at the door at the foot of the stair, While one brave little boy did repeat the Lord's Prayer.
The innocent children were buried seven or eight layers deep, The sight was heart-rending and enough to make one weep; It was a most affecting spectacle and frightful to behold The corpse of a little boy not above four years old, Who had on a top-coat much too big for him, And his little innocent face was white and grim, And appearing to be simply in a calm sleep- The sight was enough to make one's flesh to creep.
The scene in the Hall was heart-sickening to behold, And enough to make one's blood run cold.
To see the children's faces, blackened, that were trampled to death, And their parents lamenting o'er them with bated breath.
Oh! it was most lamentable for to hear The cries of the mothers for their children dear; And many mothers swooned in grief away At the sight of their dead children in grim array.
There was a parent took home a boy by mistake, And after arriving there his heart was like to break When it was found to be the body of a neighbour's child; The parent stood aghast and was like to go wild.
A man and his wife rush'd madly in the Hall, And loudly in grief on their children they did call, And the man searched for his children among the dead Seemingly without the least fear or dread.
And with his finger pointing he cried.
"That's one! two! Oh! heaven above, what shall I do;" And still he kept walking on and murmuring very low.
Until he came to the last child in the row; Then he cried, "Good God! all my family gone And now I am left to mourn alone;" And staggering back he cried, "Give me water, give me water!" While his heart was like to break and his teeth seem'd to chatter.
Oh, heaven! it must have been most pitiful to see Fathers with their dead children upon their knee While the blood ran copiously from their mouths and ears And their parents shedding o'er them hot burning tears.
I hope the Lord will comfort their parents by night and by day, For He gives us life and He takes it away, Therefore I hope their parents will put their trust in Him, Because to weep for the dead it is a sin.
Her Majesty's grief for the bereaved parents has been profound, And I'm glad to see that she has sent them £50; And I hope from all parts of the world will flow relief To aid and comfort the bereaved parents in their grief.

 Even in a palace, life may be led well!
So spake the imperial sage, purest of men,
Marcus Aurelius.
But the stifling den Of common life, where, crowded up pell-mell, Our freedom for a little bread we sell, And drudge under some foolish master's ken Who rates us if we peer outside our pen-- Match'd with a palace, is not this a hell? Even in a palace! On his truth sincere, Who spoke these words, no shadow ever came; And when my ill-school'd spirit is aflame Some nobler, ampler stage of life to win, I'll stop, and say: 'There were no succour here! The Burning of the Peoples Variety Theatre Aberdeen

 'Twas in the year of 1896, and on the 30th of September,
Which many people in Aberdeen will long remember;
The burning of the People's Variety Theatre, in Bridge Place
Because the fire spread like lightning at a rapid pace.
The fire broke out on the stage, about eight o'clock, Which gave to the audience a very fearful shock; Then a stampede ensued, and a rush was made pell-mell, And in the crush, trying to get out, many people fell.
The stage flies took fire owing to the gas Not having room enough by them to pass; And with his jacket Mr.
Macaulay tried to put out the flame, But oh! horrible to relate, it was all in vain.
Detective Innes, who was passing at the time of the fire, Rendered help in every way the audience could desire, By helping many of them for to get out, Which was a heroic action, without any doubt.
Oh! it was a pitiful and fearful sight, To see both old and young struggling with all their might, For to escape from that merciless fire, While it roared and mounted higher and higher.
Oh! it was horrible to hear the cries of that surging crowd, Yelling and crying for "Help! help!" aloud; While one old woman did fret and frown Because her clothes were torn off when knocked down.
A lady and gentleman of the Music Hall company, Monti & Spry, Managed to make their escape by climbing up very high To an advertisement board, and smashing the glass of the fanlight, And squeezed themselves through with a great fight.
But accidents will happen both on sea and land, And the works of the Almighty is hard to understand; And thank God there's only a few has fallen victims to the fire, But I hope they are now in Heaven, amongst the Heavenly choir.

The Clepington Catastrophe

 'Twas on a Monday morning, and in the year of 1884,
That a fire broke out in Bailie Bradford's store,
Which contained bales of jute and large quantities of waste,
Which the brave firemen ran to extinguish in great haste.
They left their wives that morning without any dread, Never thinking, at the burning pile, they would be killed dead By the falling of the rickety and insecure walls; When I think of it, kind Christians, my heart it appals! Because it has caused widows and their families to shed briny tears, For there hasn't been such a destructive fire for many years; Whereby four brave firemen have perished in the fire, And for better fathers or husbands no family could desire.
'Twas about five o'clock in the morning the fire did break out, While one of the workmen was inspecting the premises round about-- Luckily before any one had begun their work for the day-- So he instantly gave the alarm without delay.
At that time only a few persons were gathered on the spot, But in a few minutes some hundreds were got, Who came flying in all directions, and in great dismay; So they help'd to put out the fire without delay.
But the spreading flames, within the second flats, soon began to appear, Which filled the spectators' hearts with sympathy and fear, Lest any one should lose their life in the merciless fire, When they saw it bursting out and ascending higher and higher.
Captain Ramsay, of the Dundee Fire Brigade, was the first to arrive, And under his directions the men seemed all alive, For they did their work heroically, with all their might and main, In the midst of blinding smoke and the burning flame.
As soon as the catastrophe came to be known, The words, Fire! Fire! from every mouth were blown; And a cry of despair rang out on the morning air, When they saw the burning pile with its red fiery glare.
While a dense cloud of smoke seemed to darken the sky, And the red glaring flame ascended up on high, Which made the scene appear weird-like around; While from the spectators was heard a murmuring sound.
But the brave firemen did their duty manfully to the last, And plied the water on the burning pile, copiously and fast; But in a moment, without warning, the front wall gave way, Which filled the people's hearts with horror and dismay: Because four brave firemen were killed instantaneously on the spot, Which by the spectators will never be forgot; While the Fire Fiend laughingly did hiss and roar, As he viewed their mangled bodies.
with the debris covered o'er.
But in the midst of dust and fire they did their duty well, Aye! in the midst of a shower of bricks falling on them pell-mell, Until they were compelled to let the water-hose go; While the blood from their bruised heads and arms did flow.
But brave James Fyffe held on to the hose until the last, And when found in the debris, the people stood aghast.
When they saw him lying dead, with the hose in his hand, Their tears for him they couldn't check nor yet command.
Oh, heaven! I must confess it was no joke To see them struggling in the midst of suffocating smoke, Each man struggling hard, no doubt, to save his life, When he thought of his dear children and his wife.
But still the merciless flame shot up higher and higher; Oh, God! it is terrible and cruel to perish by fire; Alas! it was saddening and fearful to behold, When I think of it, kind Christians, it makes my blood run cold.
What makes the death of Fyffe the more distressing, He was going to be the groomsman at his sister's bridal dressing, Who was going to be married the next day; But, alas! the brave hero's life was taken away.
But accidents will happen by land and by sea, Therefore, to save ourselves from accidents, we needn't try to flee, For whatsoever God has ordained will come to pass; For instance, ye may be killed by a stone or a piece of glass.
I hope the Lord will provide for the widows in their distress, For they are to be pitied, I really must confess; And I hope the public of Dundee will lend them a helping hand; To help the widows and the fatherless is God's command.

The Capture of Lucknow

 'Twas near the Begum Kothie the battle began,
Where innocent blood as plentiful as water ran;
The Begum Kothie was a place of honour given to the 93rd,
Which heroically to a man they soon did begird.
And the 4th Punjaub Rifles were their companions in glory, And are worthy of their names enrolled in story, Because they performed prodigious wonders in the fight, By killing and scattering the Sepoys left and right.
The 93rd Highlanders bivouacked in a garden surrounded by mud walls, Determined to capture the Begum Kothie no matter what befalls--, A place strongly fortified and of enormous strength, And protected by strong earthworks of very great length.
And added to these obstacles was the most formidable of all-- A broad deep ditch that ran along the wall, Which the storming party not even guessed at before; But this barrier the British soon did climb o'er.
But early the next morning two batteries of Artillery were pounding away, And the fight went on for the whole day; And the defenders of the building kept up rattling musketry fire, And when night fell the British had to retire.
Next day the contest was renewed with better success, And the 93rd in all their beauty forward did press, And moved on toward the position without firing a shot, And under cover of some ruined buildings they instantly got.
And here for a few minutes they kept themselves under cover, While each man felt more anxious than another To attack the merciless rebels while it was day, Because their blood was up and eager for the fray.
Still the enemy kept up a blazing fire at them pell-mell, But they fired too high and not a man of them fell; And the bullets whistled around them again and again, Still on went the unwavering Highlanders with might and main.
But when they reached the ditch they were taken by surprise, By the unexpected obstacle right before their eyes; But Captain Middleton leapt into the ditch and showed them the way, And immediately the whole of the men were after him without delay.
Leith Hay himself was among the first across, And gained a footing on the other side without any personal loss; And he assisted in helping the rest out of the ditch, While the din of war was at the highest pitch.
'Twas then the struggle commenced in terrible earnest: While every man was resolved to do his best; And the enemy barricaded every entrance so as a single man could only pass, Determined to make a strong resistance, and the British to harass.
But barrier after barrier soon was passed; And the brave men no doubt felt a little harassed, But they fought desperately and overturned their foes at every point, And put the rebels to flight by shot and bayonet conjoint.
The Sheiks and the Horse Guards behaved right well-- Because beneath their swords, by the score, the Sepoys fell; And their beautiful war steeds did loudly neigh and roar, While beneath their hoofs they trampled them all o'er.
And as for John McLeod-- the pipe-major of the 93rd, He kept sounding his bagpipes and couldn't be stirred-- Because he remembered his duty in the turmoil, And in the battlefield he was never known to recoil.
And as for Major General McBain-- he was the hero in the fight; He fought heroically-- like a lion-- with all his might; And again and again he was met by desperate odds, But he scattered them around him and made them kiss the sods.
And he killed eleven of the enemy with sword in hand, Which secured for him the proudest of all honours in the land, Namely, that coveted honour called the Victoria Cross, Of which many a deserving hero has known the loss.
And as for brave Hodson-- he was a warrior born, And military uniform did his body adorn; And his voice could be heard in the battle afar, Crying-- "Come on my boys there is nothing like war!" But, in a moment, a volley was discharged at him, And he fell mortally wounded, while the Sepoys did grin; Then the Highlanders closed with their foes and made them retreat, And left them not till every rebel lay dead at their feet.
Then Sir Colin Campbell to his men did say,-- "Men, I feel proud that we have captured Lucknow this day; Therefore strike up the bagpipes and give one hearty cheer, And enjoy yourselves, my heroes, while ye are here.

THE MAID OF THE MILLS TREACHERY

 [This Ballad is introduced in the Wanderjahre, 
in a tale called The Foolish Pilgrim.
] WHENCE comes our friend so hastily, When scarce the Eastern sky is grey? Hath he just ceased, though cold it be, In yonder holy spot to pray? The brook appears to hem his path, Would he barefooted o'er it go? Why curse his orisons in wrath, Across those heights beclad with snow? Alas! his warm bed he bath left, Where he had look'd for bliss, I ween; And if his cloak too, had been reft, How fearful his disgrace had been! By yonder villain sorely press'd, His wallet from him has been torn; Our hapless friend has been undress'd, Left well nigh naked as when born.
The reason why he came this road, Is that he sought a pair of eyes, Which, at the mill, as brightly glow'd As those that are in Paradise.
He will not soon again be there; From out the house he quickly hied, And when he gain'd the open air, Thus bitterly and loudly cried "Within her gaze, so dazzling bright, No word of treachery I could read; She seem'd to see me with delight, Yet plann'd e'en then this cruel deed! Could I, when basking in her smile, Dream of the treason in her breast? She bade kind Cupid stay awhile, And he was there, to make us blest.
"To taste of love's sweet ecstasy Throughout the night, that endless seem'd, And for her mother's help to cry Only when morning sunlight beam'd! A dozen of her kith and kin, A very human flood, in-press'd Her cousins came, her aunts peer'd in, And uncles, brothers, and the rest.
"Then what a tumult, fierce and loud! Each seem'd a beast of prey to be; The maiden's honour all the crowd, With fearful shout, demand of me.
Why should they, madmen-like, begin To fall upon a guiltless youth? For he who such a prize would win, Far nimbler needs must be, in truth.
"The way to follow up with skill His freaks, by love betimes is known: He ne'er will leave, within a mill, Sweet flowers for sixteen years alone.
-- They stole my clothes away,--yes, all! And tried my cloak besides to steal.
How strange that any house so small So many rascals could conceal! "Then I sprang up, and raved, and swore, To force a passage through them there.
I saw the treacherous maid once more, And she was still, alas, so fair They all gave way before my wrath, Wild outcries flew about pell-mell; At length I managed to rush forth, With voice of thunder, from that hell.
"As maidens of the town we fly, We'll shun you maidens of the village; Leave it to those of quality Their humble worshippers to pillage.
Yet if ye are of practised skill, And of all tender ties afraid, Exchange your lovers, if ye will, But never let them be betray'd.
" Thus sings he in the winter-night, While not a blade of grass was green.
I laugh'd to see his piteous plight, For it was well-deserved, I ween.
And may this be the fate of all, Who treat by day their true loves ill, And, with foolhardy daring, crawl By night to Cupid's treacherous mill! 1798.
