La lune diminue; divin septembre.
Divine September the moon wanes.

Some kind of psychiatric discharge- ‘paranoia’ Lurked in his papers.
The madness went undiagnosed Until his sixtieth birthday.
You never let me meet him Even after our divorce.
In the end you took me on a visit with the children.
A neat flat with photographs of grandchildren, Stacks of wood for the stove, washing hung precisely In the kitchen, a Sunday suit in the wardrobe.
An unwrinkling of smiles, the hard handshake Of work-roughened hands.
One night he smashed up the tidy flat.
The TV screen was powder The clock ticked on the neat lawn ‘Murder in Seacroft Hospital’ Emblazoned on the kitchen wall.
I went with you and your sister in her car to Roundhay Wing.
Your sister had to leave for work or sleep You had to back to meet the children from school.
For Ward 42 it wasn’t an especially difficult admission.
My first lesson: I shut one set of firedoors while the charge nurse Bolted the other but after five minutes his revolt Was over and he signed the paper.
The nurse on nights had a sociology degree And an interest in borderline schizophrenia.
After lightsout we chatted about Kohut and Kernberg And Melanie Klein.
Your father was occasionally truculent, Barricading himself in on one home leave.
Nothing out of the way For a case of that kind.
The old ladies on the estate sighed, Single men were very scarce.
Always a gentleman, tipping His cap to the ladies.
There seems to be objections in the family to poetry Or at least to the kind that actually speaks And fails to lie down quietly on command.
Yours seems to have set mine alight- I must get something right.

Rhapsody on a Windy Night

 TWELVE o’clock.
Along the reaches of the street Held in a lunar synthesis, Whispering lunar incantations Dissolve the floors of memory And all its clear relations Its divisions and precisions, Every street lamp that I pass Beats like a fatalistic drum, And through the spaces of the dark Midnight shakes the memory As a madman shakes a dead geranium.
Half-past one, The street-lamp sputtered, The street-lamp muttered, The street-lamp said, “Regard that woman Who hesitates toward you in the light of the door Which opens on her like a grin.
You see the border of her dress Is torn and stained with sand, And you see the corner of her eye Twists like a crooked pin.
” The memory throws up high and dry A crowd of twisted things; A twisted branch upon the beach Eaten smooth, and polished As if the world gave up The secret of its skeleton, Stiff and white.
A broken spring in a factory yard, Rust that clings to the form that the strength has left Hard and curled and ready to snap.
Half-past two, The street-lamp said, “Remark the cat which flattens itself in the gutter, Slips out its tongue And devours a morsel of rancid butter.
” So the hand of the child, automatic, Slipped out and pocketed a toy that was running along the quay.
I could see nothing behind that child’s eye.
I have seen eyes in the street Trying to peer through lighted shutters, And a crab one afternoon in a pool, An old crab with barnacles on his back, Gripped the end of a stick which I held him.
Half-past three, The lamp sputtered, The lamp muttered in the dark.

Memory! You have the key, The little lamp spreads a ring on the stair.
Mount.
The bed is open; the tooth-brush hangs on the wall, Put your shoes at the door, sleep, prepare for life.

La Fuite De La Lune

 To outer senses there is peace,
A dreamy peace on either hand

MOONLIGHT ON THE BOSPHORUS

 Bright shone the merry moonbeams dancing o'er the wave; 
 At the cool casement, to the evening breeze flung wide, 
 Leans the Sultana, and delights to watch the tide, 
 With surge of silvery sheen, yon sleeping islets lave. 
 
 From her hand, as it falls, vibrates the light guitar. 
 She listens—hark! that sound that echoes dull and low. 
 Is it the beat upon the Archipelago 
 Of some long galley's oar, from Scio bound afar? 
 
 Is it the cormorants, whose black wings, one by one, 
 Cut the blue wave that o'er them breaks in liquid pearls? 
 Is it some hovering sprite with whistling scream that hurls 
 Down to the deep from yon old tower a loosened stone? 
 
 Who thus disturbs the tide near the seraglio? 
 'Tis no dark cormorants that on the ripple float, 
 'Tis no dull plume of stone—no oars of Turkish boat, 
 With measured beat along the water creeping slow. 
 
 'Tis heavy sacks, borne each by voiceless dusky slaves; 
 And could you dare to sound the depths of yon dark tide, 
 Something like human form would stir within its side.

Apparition

 La lune s'attristait.

Lune de Miel

 ILS ont vu les Pays-Bas, ils rentrent à Terre Haute;
Mais une nuit d’été, les voici à Ravenne,
A l’aise entre deux draps, chez deux centaines de punaises;

The Redeemer

 Darkness: the rain sluiced down; the mire was deep; 
It was past twelve on a mid-winter night, 
When peaceful folk in beds lay snug asleep; 
There, with much work to do before the light, 
We lugged our clay-sucked boots as best we might 
Along the trench; sometimes a bullet sang, 
And droning shells burst with a hollow bang; 
We were soaked, chilled and wretched, every one; 
Darkness; the distant wink of a huge gun.
I turned in the black ditch, loathing the storm; A rocket fizzed and burned with blanching flare, And lit the face of what had been a form Floundering in mirk.
He stood before me there; I say that He was Christ; stiff in the glare, And leaning forward from His burdening task, Both arms supporting it; His eyes on mine Stared from the woeful head that seemed a mask Of mortal pain in Hell's unholy shine.
No thorny crown, only a woollen cap He wore--an English soldier, white and strong, Who loved his time like any simple chap, Good days of work and sport and homely song; Now he has learned that nights are very long, And dawn a watching of the windowed sky.
But to the end, unjudging, he'll endure Horror and pain, not uncontent to die That Lancaster on Lune may stand secure.
