Marriage

 This institution,
perhaps one should say enterprise
out of respect for which
one says one need not change one's mind
about a thing one has believed in,
requiring public promises
of one's intention
to fulfill a private obligation:
I wonder what Adam and Eve
think of it by this time,
this firegilt steel
alive with goldenness;
how bright it shows --
"of circular traditions and impostures,
committing many spoils,"
requiring all one's criminal ingenuity
to avoid!
Psychology which explains everything
explains nothing
and we are still in doubt.
Eve: beautiful woman -- I have seen her when she was so handsome she gave me a start, able to write simultaneously in three languages -- English, German and French and talk in the meantime; equally positive in demanding a commotion and in stipulating quiet: "I should like to be alone;" to which the visitor replies, "I should like to be alone; why not be alone together?" Below the incandescent stars below the incandescent fruit, the strange experience of beauty; its existence is too much; it tears one to pieces and each fresh wave of consciousness is poison.
"See her, see her in this common world," the central flaw in that first crystal-fine experiment, this amalgamation which can never be more than an interesting possibility, describing it as "that strange paradise unlike flesh, gold, or stately buildings, the choicest piece of my life: the heart rising in its estate of peace as a boat rises with the rising of the water;" constrained in speaking of the serpent -- that shed snakeskin in the history of politeness not to be returned to again -- that invaluable accident exonerating Adam.
And he has beauty also; it's distressing -- the O thou to whom, from whom, without whom nothing -- Adam; "something feline, something colubrine" -- how true! a crouching mythological monster in that Persian miniature of emerald mines, raw silk -- ivory white, snow white, oyster white and six others -- that paddock full of leopards and giraffes -- long lemonyellow bodies sown with trapezoids of blue.
Alive with words, vibrating like a cymbal touched before it has been struck, he has prophesied correctly -- the industrious waterfall, "the speedy stream which violently bears all before it, at one time silent as the air and now as powerful as the wind.
" "Treading chasms on the uncertain footing of a spear," forgetting that there is in woman a quality of mind which is an instinctive manifestation is unsafe, he goes on speaking in a formal, customary strain of "past states," the present state, seals, promises, the evil one suffered, the good one enjoys, hell, heaven, everything convenient to promote one's joy.
" There is in him a state of mind by force of which, perceiving what it was not intended that he should, "he experiences a solemn joy in seeing that he has become an idol.

Unhelpful Hymen! "a kind of overgrown cupid" reduced to insignificance by the mechanical advertising parading as involuntary comment, by that experiment of Adam's with ways out but no way in -- the ritual of marriage, augmenting all its lavishness; its fiddle-head ferns, lotus flowers, opuntias, white dromedaries, its hippopotamus -- nose and mouth combined in one magnificent hopper, "the crested screamer -- that huge bird almost a lizard," its snake and the potent apple.
He tells us that "for love that will gaze an eagle blind, that is like a Hercules climbing the trees in the garden of the Hesperides, from forty-five to seventy is the best age," commending it as a fine art, as an experiment, a duty or as merely recreation.
One must not call him ruffian nor friction a calamity -- the fight to be affectionate: "no truth can be fully known until it has been tried by the tooth of disputation.

Damon The Mower

 Heark how the Mower Damon Sung,
With love of Juliana stung!
While ev'ry thing did seem to paint
The Scene more fit for his complaint.
Like her fair Eyes the day was fair; But scorching like his am'rous Care.
Sharp like his Sythe his Sorrow was, And wither'd like his Hopes the Grass.
Oh what unusual Heats are here, Which thus our Sun-burn'd Meadows sear! The Grass-hopper its pipe gives ore; And hamstring'd Frogs can dance no more.
But in the brook the green Frog wades; And Grass-hoppers seek out the shades.
Only the Snake, that kept within, Now glitters in its second skin.
This heat the Sun could never raise, Nor Dog-star so inflame's the dayes.
It from an higher Beauty grow'th, Which burns the Fields and Mower both: Which made the Dog, and makes the Sun Hotter then his own Phaeton.
Not July causeth these Extremes, But Juliana's scorching beams.
Tell me where I may pass the Fires Of the hot day, or hot desires.
To what cool Cave shall I descend, Or to what gelid Fountain bend? Alas! I look for Ease in vain, When Remedies themselves complain.
No moisture but my Tears do rest, Nor Cold but in her Icy Breast.
How long wilt Thou, fair Shepheardess, Esteem me, and my Presents less? To Thee the harmless Snake I bring, Disarmed of its teeth and sting.
To Thee Chameleons changing-hue, And Oak leaves tipt with hony due.
Yet Thou ungrateful hast not sought Nor what they are, nor who them brought.
I am the Mower Damon, known Through all the Meadows I have mown.

And though in Wooll more poor then they, Yet am I richer far in Hay.
Nor am I so deform'd to sight, If in my Sithe I looked right; In which I see my Picture done, As in a crescent Moon the Sun.
The deathless Fairyes take me oft To lead them in their Danses soft: And, when I tune my self to sing, About me they contract their Ring.
How happy might I still have mow'd, Had not Love here his Thistles sow'd! But now I all the day complain, Joyning my Labour to my Pain; And with my Sythe cut down the Grass, Yet still my Grief is where it was: But, when the Iron blunter grows, Sighing I whet my Sythe and Woes.
While thus he threw his Elbow round, Depopulating all the Ground, And, with his whistling Sythe, does cut Each stroke between the Earth and Root, The edged Stele by careless chance Did into his own Ankle glance; And there among the Grass fell down, By his own Sythe, the Mower mown.
Alas! said He, these hurts are slight To those that dye by Loves despight.
With Shepherds-purse, and Clowns-all-heal, The Blood I stanch, and Wound I seal.
Only for him no Cure is found, Whom Julianas Eyes do wound.
'Tis death alone that this must do: For Death thou art a Mower too.

Henry Phipps

 I was the Sunday school superintendent,
The dummy president of the wagon works
And the canning factory,
Acting for Thomas Rhodes and the banking clique;
My son the cashier of the bank,
Wedded to Rhodes' daughter,
My week day spent in making money,
My Sundays at church and in prayer.
In everything a cog in the wheel of things-as-they-are: Of money, master and man, made white With the paint of the Christian creed.
And then: The bank collapsed.
I stood and looked at the wrecked machine -- The wheels with blow-holes stopped with putty and painted; The rotten bolts, the broken rods; And only the hopper for souls fit to be used again In a new devourer of life, when newspapers, judges and money-magicians Build over again.
I was stripped to the bone, but I lay in the Rock of Ages, Seeing now through the game, no longer a dupe, And knowing "the upright shall dwell in the land But the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
" Then suddenly, Dr.
Meyers discovered A cancer in my liver.
I was not, after all, the particular care of God! Why, even thus standing on a peak Above the mists through which I had climbed, And ready for larger life in the world, Eternal forces Moved me on with a push.
