The Boy

 It is the boy in me who's looking out
the window, while someone across the street
mends a pillowcase, clouds shift, the gutter spout
pours rain, someone else lights a cigarette?

(Because he flinched, because he didn't whirl
around, face them, because he didn't hurl
the challenge back—"Fascists?"—not "Faggots"—Swine!
he briefly wonders—if he were a girl .

) He writes a line.
He crosses out a line.
I'll never be a man, but there's a boy crossing out words: the rain, the linen-mender, are all the homework he will do today.
The absence and the priviledge of gender confound in him, soprano, clumsy, frail.
Not neuter—neutral human, and unmarked, the younger brother in the fairy tale except, boys shouted "Jew!" across the park at him when he was coming home from school.
The book that he just read, about the war, the partisans, is less a terrible and thrilling story, more a warning, more a code, and he must puzzle out the code.
He has short hair, a red sweatshirt.
They know something about him—that he should be proud of? That's shameful if it shows? That got you killed in 1942.
In his story, do the partisans have sons? Have grandparents? Is he a Jew more than he is a boy, who'll be a man someday? Someone who'll never be a man looks out the window at the rain he thought might stop.
He reads the sentence he began.
He writes down something that he crosses out.

A Fairy Tale

 On winter nights beside the nursery fire
We read the fairy tale, while glowing coals
Builded its pictures.
There before our eyes We saw the vaulted hall of traceried stone Uprear itself, the distant ceiling hung With pendent stalactites like frozen vines; And all along the walls at intervals, Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed, And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves Divided where there peered a laughing face.
The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind, A silent murmur, carved in still, gray stone.
High pointed windows pierced the southern wall Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires To stain the tessellated marble floor With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue; And in the shade beyond the further door, Its sober squares of black and white were hid Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob Of lackeys and retainers come to view The Christening.
A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng About the entrance parted as the guests Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.
Our eager fancies noted all they brought, The glorious, unattainable delights! But always there was one unbidden guest Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.
The fire falls asunder, all is changed, I am no more a child, and what I see Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.
The gifts are there, the many pleasant things: Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name Which honors all who bear it, and the power Of making words obedient.

Fairy Tale

 Now this is the story of Olaf
Who ages and ages ago
Lived right on the top of a mountain,
A mountain all covered with snow.
And he was quite pretty and tiny With beautiful curling fair hair And small hands like delicate flowers-- Cheeks kissed by the cold mountain air.
He lived in a hut made of pinewood Just one little room and a door A table, a chair, and a bedstead And animal skins on the floor.
Now Olaf was partly fairy And so never wanted to eat; He thought dewdrops and raindrops were plenty And snowflakes and all perfumes sweet.
In the daytime when sweeping and dusting And cleaning were quite at an end, He would sit very still on the doorstep And dream--O, that he had a friend! Somebody to come when he called them, Somebody to catch by the hand, Somebody to sleep with at night time, Somebody who'd quite understand.
One night in the middle of Winter He lay wide awake on his bed, Outside there was fury of tempest And calling of wolves to be fed-- Thin wolves, grey and silent as shadows; And Olaf was frightened to death.
He had peeped through a crack in the doorpost, He had seen the white smoke of their breath.
But suddenly over the storm wind He heard a small voice pleadingly Cry, "I am a snow fairy, Olaf, Unfasten the window for me.
" So he did, and there flew through the opening The daintiest, prettiest sprite Her face and her dress and her stockings, Her hands and her curls were all white.
And she said, "O you poor little stranger Before I am melted, you know, I have brought you a valuable present, A little brown fiddle and bow.
So now you can never be lonely, With a fiddle, you see, for a friend, But all through the Summer and Winter Play beautiful songs without end.
" And then,--O she melted like water, But Olaf was happy at last; The fiddle he tucked in his shoulder, He held his small bow very fast.
So perhaps on the quietest of evenings If you listen, you may hear him soon, The child who is playing the fiddle Away up in the cold, lonely moon.

Pi

 The admirable number pi: 
three point one four one.
All the following digits are also just a start, five nine two because it never ends.
It can't be grasped, six five three five , at a glance, eight nine, by calculation, seven nine, through imagination, or even three two three eight in jest, or by comparison four six to anything two six four three in the world.
The longest snake on earth ends at thirty-odd feet.
Same goes for fairy tale snakes, though they make it a little longer.
The caravan of digits that is pi does not stop at the edge of the page, but runs off the table and into the air, over the wall, a leaf, a bird's nest, the clouds, straight into the sky, through all the bloatedness and bottomlessness.
Oh how short, all but mouse-like is the comet's tail! How frail is a ray of starlight, bending in any old space! Meanwhile two three fifteen three hundred nineteen my phone number your shirt size the year nineteen hundred and seventy-three sixth floor number of inhabitants sixty-five cents hip measurement two fingers a charade and a code, in which we find how blithe the trostle sings! and please remain calm, and heaven and earth shall pass away, but not pi, that won't happen, it still has an okay five, and quite a fine eight, and all but final seven, prodding and prodding a plodding eternity to last.

The Land of the Exile

 Mother, the light has grown grey in the sky; I do not know what
the time is.
There is no fun in my play, so I have come to you.
It is Saturday, our holiday.
Leave off your work, mother; sit here by the window and tell me where the desert of Tepantar in the fairy tale is.
The shadow of the rains has covered the day from end to end.
The fierce lightning is scratching the sky with its nails.
When the clouds rumble and it thunders, I love to be afraid in my heart and cling to you.
When the heavy rain patters for hours on the bamboo leaves, and our windows shake and rattle at the gusts of wind, I like to sit alone in the room, mother, with you, and hear you talk about the desert of Tepantar in the fairy tale.
Where is it, mother, on the shore of what sea, at the foot of what hills, in the kingdom of what king? There are no hedges there to mark the fields, no footpath across it by which the villagers reach their village in the evening, or the woman who gathers dry sticks in the forest can bring her load to the market.
With patches of yellow grass in the sand and only one tree where the pair of wise old birds have their nest, lies the desert of Tepantar.
I can imagine how, on just such a cloudy day, the young son of the king is riding alone on a grey horse through the desert, in search of the princess who lies imprisoned in the giant's palace across that unknown water.
When the haze of the rain comes down in the distant sky, and lightning starts up like a sudden fit of pain, does he remember his unhappy mother, abandoned by the king, sweeping the cow-stall and wiping her eyes, while he rides through the desert of Tepantar in the fairy tale? See, mother, it is almost dark before the day is over, and thee are no travellers yonder on the village road.
The shepherd boy has gone home early from the pasture, and men have left their fields to sit on mats under the eaves of their huts, watching the scowling clouds.
Mother, I have left all my books on the shelf-do not ask me to do my lessons now.
When I grow up and am bid like my father, I shall learn all that must be learnt.
But just for today, tell me, mother, where the desert of Tepantar in the fairy tale is.

Manuelzinho

 Half squatter, half tenant (no rent)—
a sort of inheritance; white,
in your thirties now, and supposed
to supply me with vegetables,
but you don't; or you won't; or you can't
get the idea through your brain—
the world's worst gardener since Cain.
Titled above me, your gardens ravish my eyes.
You edge the beds of silver cabbages with red carnations, and lettuces mix with alyssum.
And then umbrella ants arrive, or it rains for a solid week and the whole thing's ruined again and I buy you more pounds of seeds, imported, guaranteed, and eventually you bring me a mystic thee-legged carrot, or a pumpkin "bigger than the baby.
" I watch you through the rain, trotting, light, on bare feet, up the steep paths you have made— or your father and grandfather made— all over my property, with your head and back inside a sodden burlap bag, and feel I can't endure it another minute; then, indoors, beside the stove, keep on reading a book.
You steal my telephone wires, or someone does.
You starve your horse and yourself and your dogs and family.
among endless variety, you eat boiled cabbage stalks.
And once I yelled at you so loud to hurry up and fetch me those potatoes your holey hat flew off, you jumped out of your clogs, leaving three objects arranged in a triangle at my feet, as if you'd been a gardener in a fairy tale all this time and at the word "potatoes" had vanished to take up your work of fairy prince somewhere.
The strangest things happen to you.
Your cows eats a "poison grass" and drops dead on the spot.
Nobody else's does.
And then your father dies, a superior old man with a black plush hat, and a moustache like a white spread-eagled sea gull.
The family gathers, but you, no, you "don't think he's dead! I look at him.
He's cold.
They're burying him today.
But you know, I don't think he's dead.
" I give you money for the funeral and you go and hire a bus for the delighted mourners, so I have to hand over some more and then have to hear you tell me you pray for me every night! And then you come again, sniffing and shivering, hat in hand, with that wistful face, like a child's fistful of bluets or white violets, improvident as the dawn, and once more I provide for a shot of penicillin down at the pharmacy, or one more bottle of Electrical Baby Syrup.
Or, briskly, you come to settle what we call our "accounts," with two old copybooks, one with flowers on the cover, the other with a camel.
immediate confusion.
You've left out decimal points.
Your columns stagger, honeycombed with zeros.
You whisper conspiratorially; the numbers mount to millions.
Account books? They are Dream Books.
in the kitchen we dream together how the meek shall inherit the earth— or several acres of mine.
With blue sugar bags on their heads, carrying your lunch, your children scuttle by me like little moles aboveground, or even crouch behind bushes as if I were out to shoot them! —Impossible to make friends, though each will grab at once for an orange or a piece of candy.
Twined in wisps of fog, I see you all up there along with Formoso, the donkey, who brays like a pump gone dry, then suddenly stops.
—All just standing, staring off into fog and space.
Or coming down at night, in silence, except for hoofs, in dim moonlight, the horse or Formoso stumbling after.
Between us float a few big, soft, pale-blue, sluggish fireflies, the jellyfish of the air.

Patch upon patch upon patch, your wife keeps all of you covered.
She has gone over and over (forearmed is forewarned) your pair of bright-blue pants with white thread, and these days your limbs are draped in blueprints.
You paint—heaven knows why— the outside of the crown and brim of your straw hat.
Perhaps to reflect the sun? Or perhaps when you were small, your mother said, "Manuelzinho, one thing; be sure you always paint your straw hat.
" One was gold for a while, but the gold wore off, like plate.
One was bright green.
Unkindly, I called you Klorophyll Kid.
My visitors thought it was funny.
I apologize here and now.
You helpless, foolish man, I love you all I can, I think.
Or I do? I take off my hat, unpainted and figurative, to you.
Again I promise to try.

My Hour

 Day after day behold me plying
My pen within an office drear;
The dullest dog, till homeward hieing,
Then lo! I reign a king of cheer.
A throne have I of padded leather, A little court of kiddies three, A wife who smiles whate'er the weather, A feast of muffins, jam and tea.

And now the honest grog is steaming, And now the trusty briar's aglow: Alas! in smoking, drinking, dreaming, How sadly swift the moments go! Oh, golden hour! 'twixt love and duty, All others I to others give; But you are mine to yield to Beauty, To glean Romance, to greatly live.
For in my easy-chair reclining .

Wild dooms shall daunt, and dawns be gory, And Death shall sit beside my knee; Till after terror, torment, glory, I win again the sea, the sea.

Manteau Three

 In the fairy tale the sky
 makes of itself a coat
because it needs you
 to put it 
on.
How can it do this? It collects its motes.
It condenses its sound- track, all the pyrric escapes, the pilgrimages still unconsummated, the turreted thoughts of sky it slightly liquefies and droops, the hum of the yellowest day alive, office-holders in their books, their corridors, resplendent memories of royal rooms now filtered up — by smoke, by must — it tangles up into a weave, tied up with votive offerings — laws, electricity — what the speakers let loose from their tiny eternity, what the empty streets held up as offering when only a bit of wind litigated in the sycamores, oh and the flapping drafts unfinished thoughts raked out of air, and the leaves clawing their way after deep sleep set in, and all formations — assonant, muscular, chatty hurries of swarm (peoples, debris before the storm) — things that grew loud when the street grew empty, and breaths that let themselves be breathed to freight a human argument, and sidelong glances in the midst of things, and voice — yellowest day alive — as it took place above the telegram, above the hand cleaving the open-air to cut its thought, hand flung towards open doorways into houses where den-couch and silver tray itch with inaction — what is there left now to believe — the coat? — it tangles up a good tight weave, windy yet sturdy, a coat for the ages — one layer a movie of bluest blue, one layer the war-room mappers and their friends in trenches also blue, one layer market-closings and one hydrangeas turning blue just as I say so, and so on, so that it flows in the sky to the letter, you still sitting in the den below not knowing perhaps that now is as the fairy tale exactly, (as in the movie), foretold, had one been on the right channel, (although you can feel it alongside, in the house, in the food, the umbrellas, the bicycles), (even the leg muscles of this one grown quite remarkable), the fairy tale beginning to hover above — onscreen fangs, at the desk one of the older ones paying bills — the coat in the sky above the house not unlike celestial fabric, a snap of wind and plot to it, are we waiting for the kinds to go to sleep? when is it time to go outside and look? I would like to place myself in the position of the one suddenly looking up to where the coat descends and presents itself, not like the red shoes in the other story, red from all we had stepped in, no, this the coat all warm curves and grassy specificities, intellectuals also there, but still indoors, standing up smokily to mastermind, theory emerging like a flowery hat, there, above the head, descending, while outside, outside, this coat — which I desire, which I, in the tale, desire — as it touches the dream of reason which I carry inevitably in my shoulders, in my very carriage, forgive me, begins to shred like this, as you see it do, now, as if I were too much in focus making the film shred, it growing very hot (as in giving birth) though really it being just evening, the movie back on the reel, the sky one step further down into the world but only one step, me trying to pull it down, onto this frame, for which it seems so fitting, for which the whole apparatus of attention had seemed to prepare us, and then the shredding beginning which sounds at first like the lovely hum where sun fills the day to its fringe of stillness but then continues, too far, too hard, and we have to open our hands again and let it go, let it rise up above us, incomprehensible, clicker still in my right hand, the teller of the story and the shy bride, to whom he was showing us off a little perhaps, leaning back into their gossamer ripeness, him touching her storm, the petticoat, the shredded coat left mid-air, just above us, the coat in which the teller's plot entered this atmosphere, this rosy sphere of hope and lack, this windiness of middle evening, so green, oh what difference could it have made had the teller needed to persuade her further — so green this torn hem in the first miles — or is it inches? — of our night, so full of hollowness, so wild with rhetoric .
