A Nocturnal Reverie

In such a night, when every louder wind
Is to its distant cavern safe confined;
And only gentle Zephyr fans his wings,
And lonely Philomel, still waking, sings;
Or from some tree, famed for the owl's delight,
She, hollowing clear, directs the wand'rer right:
In such a night, when passing clouds give place,
Or thinly veil the heav'ns' mysterious face;
When in some river, overhung with green,
The waving moon and trembling leaves are seen;
When freshened grass now bears itself upright,
And makes cool banks to pleasing rest invite,
Whence springs the woodbind, and the bramble-rose,
And where the sleepy cowslip sheltered grows;
Whilst now a paler hue the foxglove takes,
Yet checkers still with red the dusky brakes
When scattered glow-worms, but in twilight fine,
Shew trivial beauties watch their hour to shine;
Whilst Salisb'ry stands the test of every light,
In perfect charms, and perfect virtue bright:
When odors, which declined repelling day,
Through temp'rate air uninterrupted stray;
When darkened groves their softest shadows wear,
And falling waters we distinctly hear;
When through the gloom more venerable shows
Some ancient fabric, awful in repose,
While sunburnt hills their swarthy looks conceal,
And swelling haycocks thicken up the vale:
When the loosed horse now, as his pasture leads,
Comes slowly grazing through th' adjoining meads,
Whose stealing pace, and lengthened shade we fear,

Which but endures, whilst tyrant man does sleep;
When a sedate content the spirit feels,
And no fierce light disturbs, whilst it reveals;
But silent musings urge the mind to seek
Something, too high for syllables to speak;
Till the free soul to a composedness charmed,
Finding the elements of rage disarmed,
O'er all below a solemn quiet grown,
Joys in th' inferior world, and thinks it like her own:
In such a night let me abroad remain,

Elegy XVIII: Loves Progress

 Who ever loves, if he do not propose
The right true end of love, he's one that goes
To sea for nothing but to make him sick.
Love is a bear-whelp born: if we o'erlick Our love, and force it new strange shapes to take, We err, and of a lump a monster make.
Were not a calf a monster that were grown Faced like a man, though better than his own? Perfection is in unity: prefer One woman first, and then one thing in her.
I, when I value gold, may think upon The ductileness, the application, The wholsomeness, the ingenuity, From rust, from soil, from fire ever free; But if I love it, 'tis because 'tis made By our new nature (Use) the soul of trade.
All these in women we might think upon (If women had them) and yet love but one.
Can men more injure women than to say They love them for that by which they're not they? Makes virtue woman? Must I cool my blood Till I both be, and find one, wise and good? May barren angels love so! But if we Make love to woman, virtue is not she, As beauty's not, nor wealth.
He that strays thus From her to hers is more adulterous Than if he took her maid.
Search every sphere And firmament, our Cupid is not there; He's an infernal god, and under ground With Pluto dwells, where gold and fire abound: Men to such gods their sacrificing coals Did not in altars lay, but pits and holes.
Although we see celestial bodies move Above the earth, the earth we till and love: So we her airs contemplate, words and heart And virtues, but we love the centric part.
Nor is the soul more worthy, or more fit, For love than this, as infinite is it.
But in attaining this desired place How much they err that set out at the face.
The hair a forest is of ambushes, Of springs, snares, fetters and manacles; The brow becalms us when 'tis smooth and plain, And when 'tis wrinkled shipwrecks us again— Smooth, 'tis a paradise where we would have Immortal stay, and wrinkled 'tis our grave.
The nose (like to the first meridian) runs Not 'twixt an East and West, but 'twixt two suns; It leaves a cheek, a rosy hemisphere, On either side, and then directs us where Upon the Islands Fortunate we fall, (Not faint Canaries, but Ambrosial) Her swelling lips; to which when we are come, We anchor there, and think ourselves at home, For they seem all: there Sirens' songs, and there Wise Delphic oracles do fill the ear; There in a creek where chosen pearls do swell, The remora, her cleaving tongue doth dwell.
These, and the glorious promontory, her chin, O'erpassed, and the straight Hellespont between The Sestos and Abydos of her breasts, (Not of two lovers, but two loves the nests) Succeeds a boundless sea, but yet thine eye Some island moles may scattered there descry; And sailing towards her India, in that way Shall at her fair Atlantic navel stay; Though thence the current be thy pilot made, Yet ere thou be where thou wouldst be embayed Thou shalt upon another forest set, Where many shipwreck and no further get.
When thou art there, consider what this chase Misspent by thy beginning at the face.

Some symetry the foot hath with that part Which thou dost seek, and is thy map for that, Lovely enough to stop, but not stay at; Least subject to disguise and change it is— Men say the devil never can change his.
It is the emblem that hath figured Firmness; 'tis the first part that comes to bed.
Civility we see refined; the kiss Which at the face began, transplanted is, Since to the hand, since to the imperial knee, Now at the papal foot delights to be: If kings think that the nearer way, and do Rise from the foot, lovers may do so too; For as free spheres move faster far than can Birds, whom the air resists, so may that man Which goes this empty and ethereal way, Than if at beauty's elements he stay.
Rich nature hath in women wisely made Two purses, and their mouths aversely laid: They then which to the lower tribute owe That way which that exchequer looks must go: He which doth not, his error is as great As who by clyster gave the stomach meat.

Niobe in Distress

 Apollo's wrath to man the dreadful spring
Of ills innum'rous, tuneful goddess, sing!
Thou who did'st first th' ideal pencil give,
And taught'st the painter in his works to live,
Inspire with glowing energy of thought,
What Wilson painted, and what Ovid wrote.
Muse! lend thy aid, nor let me sue in vain, Tho' last and meanest of the rhyming train! O guide my pen in lofty strains to show The Phrygian queen, all beautiful in woe.
'Twas where Maeonia spreads her wide domain Niobe dwelt, and held her potent reign: See in her hand the regal sceptre shine, The wealthy heir of Tantalus divine, He most distinguish'd by Dodonean Jove, To approach the tables of the gods above: Her grandsire Atlas, who with mighty pains Th' ethereal axis on his neck sustains: Her other grandsire on the throne on high Rolls the loud-pealing thunder thro' the sky.
Her spouse, Amphion, who from Jove too springs, Divinely taught to sweep the sounding strings.
Seven sprightly sons the royal bed adorn, Seven daughters beauteous as the op'ning morn, As when Aurora fills the ravish'd sight, And decks the orient realms with rosy light From their bright eyes the living splendors play, Nor can beholders bear the flashing ray.
Wherever, Niobe, thou turn'st thine eyes, New beauties kindle, and new joys arise! But thou had'st far the happier mother prov'd, If this fair offspring had been less belov'd: What if their charms exceed Aurora's teint.
No words could tell them, and no pencil paint, Thy love too vehement hastens to destroy Each blooming maid, and each celestial boy.
Now Manto comes, endu'd with mighty skill, The past to explore, the future to reveal.
Thro' Thebes' wide streets Tiresia's daughter came, Divine Latona's mandate to proclaim: The Theban maids to hear the orders ran, When thus Maeonia's prophetess began: "Go, Thebans! great Latona's will obey, "And pious tribute at her altars pay: "With rights divine, the goddess be implor'd, "Nor be her sacred offspring unador'd.
" Thus Manto spoke.
The Theban maids obey, And pious tribute to the goddess pay.
The rich perfumes ascend in waving spires, And altars blaze with consecrated fires; The fair assembly moves with graceful air, And leaves of laurel bind the flowing hair.
Niobe comes with all her royal race, With charms unnumber'd, and superior grace: Her Phrygian garments of delightful hue, Inwove with gold, refulgent to the view, Beyond description beautiful she moves Like heav'nly Venus, 'midst her smiles and loves: She views around the supplicating train, And shakes her graceful head with stern disdain, Proudly she turns around her lofty eyes, And thus reviles celestial deities: "What madness drives the Theban ladies fair "To give their incense to surrounding air? "Say why this new sprung deity preferr'd? "Why vainly fancy your petitions heard? "Or say why Cæus offspring is obey'd, "While to my goddesship no tribute's paid? "For me no altars blaze with living fires, "No bullock bleeds, no frankincense transpires, "Tho' Cadmus' palace, not unknown to fame, "And Phrygian nations all revere my name.
"Where'er I turn my eyes vast wealth I find, "Lo! here an empress with a goddess join'd.
"What, shall a Titaness be deify'd, "To whom the spacious earth a couch deny'd! "Nor heav'n, nor earth, nor sea receiv'd your queen, "Till pitying Delos took the wand'rer in.
"Round me what a large progeny is spread! "No frowns of fortune has my soul to dread.
"What if indignant she decrease my train "More than Latona's number will remain; "Then hence, ye Theban dames, hence haste away, "Nor longer off'rings to Latona pay; "Regard the orders of Amphion's spouse, "And take the leaves of laurel from your brows.
" Niobe spoke.
The Theban maids obey'd, Their brows unbound, and left the rights unpaid.
The angry goddess heard, then silence broke On Cynthus' summit, and indignant spoke; "Phoebus! behold, thy mother in disgrace, "Who to no goddess yields the prior place "Except to Juno's self, who reigns above, "The spouse and sister of the thund'ring Jove.
"Niobe, sprung from Tantalus, inspires "Each Theban bosom with rebellious fires; "No reason her imperious temper quells, "But all her father in her tongue rebels; "Wrap her own sons for her blaspheming breath, "Apollo! wrap them in the shades of death.
" Latona ceas'd, and ardent thus replies The God, whose glory decks th' expanded skies.
"Cease thy complaints, mine be the task assign'd "To punish pride, and scourge the rebel mind.
" This Phoebe join'd.
--They wing their instant flight; Thebes trembled as th' immortal pow'rs alight.
With clouds incompass'd glorious Phoebus stands; The feather'd vengeance quiv'ring in his hands.
Near Cadmus' walls a plain extended lay, Where Thebes' young princes pass'd in sport the day: There the bold coursers bounded o'er the plains, While their great masters held the golden reins.
Ismenus first the racing pastime led, And rul'd the fury of his flying steed.
"Ah me," he sudden cries, with shrieking breath, While in his breast he feels the shaft of death; He drops the bridle on his courser's mane, Before his eyes in shadows swims the plain, He, the first-born of great Amphion's bed, Was struck the first, first mingled with the dead.
Then didst thou, Sipylus, the language hear Of fate portentous whistling in the air: As when th' impending storm the sailor sees He spreads his canvas to the fav'ring breeze, So to thine horse thou gav'st the golden reins, Gav'st him to rush impetuous o'er the plains: But ah! a fatal shaft from Phoebus' hand Smites thro' thy neck, and sinks thee on the sand.
Two other brothers were at wrestling found, And in their pastime claspt each other round: A shaft that instant from Apollo's hand Transfixt them both, and stretcht them on the sand: Together they their cruel fate bemoan'd, Together languish'd, and together groan'd: Together too th' unbodied spirits fled, And sought the gloomy mansions of the dead.
Alphenor saw, and trembling at the view, Beat his torn breast, that chang'd its snowy hue.
He flies to raise them in a kind embrace; A brother's fondness triumphs in his face: Alphenor fails in this fraternal deed, A dart dispatch'd him (so the fates decreed Soon as the arrow left the deadly wound, His issuing entrails smoak'd upon the ground.
What woes on blooming Damasichon wait! His sighs portend his near impending fate.
Just where the well-made leg begins to be, And the soft sinews form the supple knee, The youth sore wounded by the Delian god Attempts t' extract the crime-avenging rod, But, whilst he strives the will of fate t' avert, Divine Apollo sends a second dart; Swift thro' his throat the feather'd mischief flies, Bereft of sense, he drops his head, and dies.
Young Ilioneus, the last, directs his pray'r, And cries, "My life, ye gods celestial! spare.
" Apollo heard, and pity touch'd his heart, But ah! too late, for he had sent the dart: Thou too, O Ilioneus, art doom'd to fall, The fates refuse that arrow to recal.
On the swift wings of ever flying Fame To Cadmus' palace soon the tidings came: Niobe heard, and with indignant eyes She thus express'd her anger and surprise: "Why is such privilege to them allow'd? "Why thus insulted by the Delian god? "Dwells there such mischief in the pow'rs above? "Why sleeps the vengeance of immortal Jove?" For now Amphion too, with grief oppress'd, Had plung'd the deadly dagger in his breast.
Niobe now, less haughty than before, With lofty head directs her steps no more She, who late told her pedigree divine, And drove the Thebans from Latona's shrine, How strangely chang'd!--yet beautiful in woe, She weeps, nor weeps unpity'd by the foe.
On each pale corse the wretched mother spread Lay overwhelm'd with grief, and kiss'd her dead, Then rais'd her arms, and thus, in accents slow, "Be sated cruel Goddess! with my woe; "If I've offended, let these streaming eyes, "And let this sev'nfold funeral suffice: "Ah! take this wretched life you deign'd to save, "With them I too am carried to the grave.
"Rejoice triumphant, my victorious foe, "But show the cause from whence your triumphs flow? "Tho' I unhappy mourn these children slain, "Yet greater numbers to my lot remain.
" She ceas'd, the bow string twang'd with awful sound, Which struck with terror all th' assembly round, Except the queen, who stood unmov'd alone, By her distresses more presumptuous grown.
Near the pale corses stood their sisters fair In sable vestures and dishevell'd hair; One, while she draws the fatal shaft away, Faints, falls, and sickens at the light of day.
To sooth her mother, lo! another flies, And blames the fury of inclement skies, And, while her words a filial pity show, Struck dumb--indignant seeks the shades below.
Now from the fatal place another flies, Falls in her flight, and languishes, and dies.
Another on her sister drops in death; A fifth in trembling terrors yields her breath; While the sixth seeks some gloomy cave in vain, Struck with the rest, and mingled with the slain.
One only daughter lives, and she the least; The queen close clasp'd the daughter to her breast: "Ye heav'nly pow'rs, ah spare me one," she cry'd, "Ah! spare me one," the vocal hills reply'd: In vain she begs, the Fates her suit deny, In her embrace she sees her daughter die.

The passing air "Made no impression on her stiff'ning hair.

Siege and Conquest of Alhama The

 The Moorish King rides up and down,
Through Granada's royal town;
From Elvira's gate to those
Of Bivarambla on he goes.
Woe is me, Alhama! Letters to the monarch tell How Alhama's city fell: In the fire the scroll he threw, And the messenger he slew.
Woe is me, Albamal He quits his mule, and mounts his horse, And through the street directs his course; Through the street of Zacatin To the Alhambra spurring in.
Woe is me, Alhama! When the Alhambra walls he gain'd, On the moment he ordain'd That the trumpet straight should sound With the silver clarion round.

Epistles to Several Persons: Epistle IV To Richard Boyle

 Est brevitate opus, ut currat sententia, neu se

(Horace, Satires, I, x, 17-22) 'Tis strange, the miser should his cares employ To gain those riches he can ne'er enjoy: Is it less strange, the prodigal should waste His wealth to purchase what he ne'er can taste? Not for himself he sees, or hears, or eats; Artists must choose his pictures, music, meats: He buys for Topham, drawings and designs, For Pembroke, statues, dirty gods, and coins; Rare monkish manuscripts for Hearne alone, And books for Mead, and butterflies for Sloane.
Think we all these are for himself? no more Than his fine wife, alas! or finer whore.
For what his Virro painted, built, and planted? Only to show, how many tastes he wanted.
What brought Sir Visto's ill got wealth to waste? Some daemon whisper'd, "Visto! have a taste.

Without it, proud Versailles! thy glory falls; And Nero's terraces desert their walls: The vast parterres a thousand hands shall make, Lo! Cobham comes, and floats them with a lake: Or cut wide views through mountains to the plain, You'll wish your hill or shelter'd seat again.

My Lord advances with majestic mien, Smit with the mighty pleasure, to be seen: But soft--by regular approach--not yet-- First through the length of yon hot terrace sweat; And when up ten steep slopes you've dragg'd your thighs, Just at his study door he'll bless your eyes.
His study! with what authors is it stor'd? In books, not authors, curious is my Lord; To all their dated backs he turns you round: These Aldus printed, those Du Sueil has bound.
Lo, some are vellum, and the rest as good For all his Lordship knows, but they are wood.
For Locke or Milton 'tis in vain to look, These shelves admit not any modern book.
And now the chapel's silver bell you hear, That summons you to all the pride of pray'r: Light quirks of music, broken and uneven, Make the soul dance upon a jig to heaven.
On painted ceilings you devoutly stare, Where sprawl the saints of Verrio or Laguerre, On gilded clouds in fair expansion lie, And bring all paradise before your eye.
To rest, the cushion and soft dean invite, Who never mentions Hell to ears polite.
But hark! the chiming clocks to dinner call; A hundred footsteps scrape the marble hall: The rich buffet well-colour'd serpents grace, And gaping Tritons spew to wash your face.
Is this a dinner? this a genial room? No, 'tis a temple, and a hecatomb.
A solemn sacrifice, perform'd in state, You drink by measure, and to minutes eat.
So quick retires each flying course, you'd swear Sancho's dread doctor and his wand were there.
Between each act the trembling salvers ring, From soup to sweet wine, and God bless the King.
In plenty starving, tantaliz'd in state, And complaisantly help'd to all I hate, Treated, caress'd, and tir'd, I take my leave, Sick of his civil pride from morn to eve; I curse such lavish cost, and little skill, And swear no day was ever pass'd so ill.
Yet hence the poor are cloth'd, the hungry fed; Health to himself, and to his infants bread The lab'rer bears: What his hard heart denies, His charitable vanity supplies.
Another age shall see the golden ear Embrown the slope, and nod on the parterre, Deep harvests bury all his pride has plann'd, And laughing Ceres reassume the land.
Who then shall grace, or who improve the soil? Who plants like Bathurst, or who builds like Boyle.
'Tis use alone that sanctifies expense, And splendour borrows all her rays from sense.
His father's acres who enjoys in peace, Or makes his neighbours glad, if he increase: Whose cheerful tenants bless their yearly toil, Yet to their Lord owe more than to the soil; Whose ample lawns are not asham'd to feed The milky heifer and deserving steed; Whose rising forests, not for pride or show, But future buildings, future navies, grow: Let his plantations stretch from down to down, First shade a country, and then raise a town.
You too proceed! make falling arts your care, Erect new wonders, and the old repair; Jones and Palladio to themselves restore, And be whate'er Vitruvius was before: Till kings call forth th' ideas of your mind, Proud to accomplish what such hands design'd, Bid harbours open, public ways extend, Bid temples, worthier of the God, ascend; Bid the broad arch the dang'rous flood contain, The mole projected break the roaring main; Back to his bounds their subject sea command, And roll obedient rivers through the land; These honours, peace to happy Britain brings, These are imperial works, and worthy kings.

The Deserted Cottage

 Who dwelt in yonder lonely Cot,
Why is it thus forsaken?
It seems, by all the world forgot,
Above its path the high grass grows,
And through its thatch the northwind blows
--Its thatch, by tempests shaken.
And yet, it tops a verdant hill By Summer gales surrounded: Beneath its door a shallow rill Runs brawling to the vale below, And near it sweetest flowrets grow By banks of willow bounded.
Then why is ev'ry casement dark? Why looks the Cot so chearless? Ah ! why does ruin seem to mark The calm retreat where LOVE should dwell, And FRIENDSHIP teach the heart to swell With rapture, pure and fearless? There, far above the busy croud, Man may repose in quiet; There, smile, that he has left the proud, And blest with liberty, enjoy More than Ambition's gilded toy, Or Folly's sick'ning riot.
For there, the ever tranquil mind, On calm Religion resting, May in each lonely labyrinth find The DEITY, whose boundless pow'r Directs the blast, or tints the flow'r-- No mortal foe molesting.
Stranger, yon spot was once the scene Where peace and joy resided: And oft the merry time has been When Love and Friendship warm'd the breast, And Freedom, making wealth a jest, The pride of Pomp derided.
Old JACOB was the Cottage Lord, His wide domain, surrounding, By Nature's treasure amply stor'd; He from his casement could behold The breezy mountain, ting'd with gold, The varied landscape bounding! The coming morn, with lustre gay, Breath'd sweetly on his dwelling; The twilight veil of parting day Stole softly o'er his quiet shed, Hiding the mountain's misty head, Where the night-breeze was swelling.
One lovely Girl, Old JACOB rear'd And she was fair, and blooming; She, like the morning Star, appear'd, Swift gliding o'er the mountain's crest, While her blue eyes her soul confess'd, No borrow'd rays assuming.
'Twas her's, the vagrant lamb to lead, To watch the wild goat playing: To join the Shepherd's tuneful reed, And, when the sultry Sun rose high, To tend the Herds, deep-lowing nigh, Where the swift brook was straying.
One sturdy Boy, a younker bold, Ere they were doom'd to sever, Maintain'd poor JACOB, sick and old; But now, where yon tall poplars wave, Pale primroses adorn the grave-- Where JACOB sleeps, for Ever! Young, in the wars, the brave Boy fell! His Sister died of sadness! But one remain'd their fate to tell, For JACOB now was left alone, And he, alas ! was helpless grown, And pin'd in moody madness.
At night, by moonshine would he stray, Along the upland dreary; And, talking wildly all the way, Would fancy, 'till the Sun uprose, That Heav'n, in pity, mark'd the woes-- Of which his soul was weary.
One morn, upon the dewy grass Poor JACOB's sorrows ended, The woodland's narrow winding pass Was his last scene of lonely care, For, gentle Stranger, lifeless there-- Was JACOB'S form extended! He lies beneath yon Poplar tree That tops the church-yard, sighing! For sighing oft it seems to be, And as its waving leaves, around, With morning's tears begem the ground The Zephyr trembles, flying! And now behold yon little Cot All dreary and forsaken! And know, that soon 'twill be thy lot, To fall, like Jacob and his race, And leave on Time's swift wing no trace, Which way thy course is taken.
Yet, if for Truth and feeling known, Thou still shalt be lamented! For when thy parting sigh has flown, Fond MEM'RY on thy grave shall give A tear --to bid thy VIRTUES live! Then--Smile, AND BE CONTENTED!

Lead Soldiers

 The nursery fire burns brightly, crackling in cheerful 
little explosions
and trails of sparks up the back of the chimney.
Miniature rockets peppering the black bricks with golden stars, as though a gala flamed a night of victorious wars.
The nodding mandarin on the bookcase moves his head forward and back, slowly, and looks into the air with his blue-green eyes.
He stares into the air and nods -- forward and back.
The red rose in his hand is a crimson splash on his yellow coat.
Forward and back, and his blue-green eyes stare into the air, and he nods -- nods.
Tommy's soldiers march to battle, Trumpets flare and snare-drums rattle.
Bayonets flash, and sabres glance -- How the horses snort and prance! Cannon drawn up in a line Glitter in the dizzy shine Of the morning sunlight.
Flags Ripple colours in great jags.
Red blows out, then blue, then green, Then all three -- a weaving sheen Of prismed patriotism.
March Tommy's soldiers, stiff and starch, Boldly stepping to the rattle Of the drums, they go to battle.
Tommy lies on his stomach on the floor and directs his columns.
He puts his infantry in front, and before them ambles a mounted band.
Their instruments make a strand of gold before the scarlet-tunicked soldiers, and they take very long steps on their little green platforms, and from the ranks bursts the song of Tommy's soldiers marching to battle.
The song jolts a little as the green platforms stick on the thick carpet.
Tommy wheels his guns round the edge of a box of blocks, and places a squad of cavalry on the commanding eminence of a footstool.
The fire snaps pleasantly, and the old Chinaman nods -- nods.
The fire makes the red rose in his hand glow and twist.
Hist! That is a bold song Tommy's soldiers sing as they march along to battle.
Crack! Rattle! The sparks fly up the chimney.
Tommy's army's off to war -- Not a soldier knows what for.
But he knows about his rifle, How to shoot it, and a trifle Of the proper thing to do When it's he who is shot through.
Like a cleverly trained flea, He can follow instantly Orders, and some quick commands Really make severe demands On a mind that's none too rapid, Leaden brains tend to the vapid.
But how beautifully dressed Is this army! How impressed Tommy is when at his heel All his baggage wagons wheel About the patterned carpet, and Moving up his heavy guns He sees them glow with diamond suns Flashing all along each barrel.
And the gold and blue apparel Of his gunners is a joy.
Tommy is a lucky boy.
Boom! Boom! Ta-ra! The old mandarin nods under his purple umbrella.
The rose in his hand shoots its petals up in thin quills of crimson.
Then they collapse and shrivel like red embers.
The fire sizzles.
Tommy is galloping his cavalry, two by two, over the floor.
They must pass the open terror of the door and gain the enemy encamped under the wash-stand.
The mounted band is very grand, playing allegro and leading the infantry on at the double quick.
The tassel of the hearth-rug has flung down the bass-drum, and he and his dapple-grey horse lie overtripped, slipped out of line, with the little lead drumsticks glistening to the fire's shine.
The fire burns and crackles, and tickles the tripped bass-drum with its sparkles.
The marching army hitches its little green platforms valiantly, and steadily approaches the door.
The overturned bass-drummer, lying on the hearth-rug, melting in the heat, softens and sheds tears.
The song jeers at his impotence, and flaunts the glory of the martial and still upstanding, vaunting the deeds it will do.
For are not Tommy's soldiers all bright and new? Tommy's leaden soldiers we, Glittering with efficiency.
Not a button's out of place, Tons and tons of golden lace Wind about our officers.
Every manly bosom stirs At the thought of killing -- killing! Tommy's dearest wish fulfilling.
We are gaudy, savage, strong, And our loins so ripe we long First to kill, then procreate, Doubling so the laws of Fate.
On their women we have sworn To graft our sons.
And overborne They'll rear us younger soldiers, so Shall our race endure and grow, Waxing greater in the wombs Borrowed of them, while damp tombs Rot their men.
O Glorious War! Goad us with your points, Great Star! The china mandarin on the bookcase nods slowly, forward and back -- forward and back -- and the red rose writhes and wriggles, thrusting its flaming petals under and over one another like tortured snakes.
The fire strokes them with its dartles, and purrs at them, and the old man nods.
Tommy does not hear the song.
He only sees the beautiful, new, gaily-coloured lead soldiers.
They belong to him, and he is very proud and happy.
He shouts his orders aloud, and gallops his cavalry past the door to the wash-stand.
He creeps over the floor on his hands and knees to one battalion and another, but he sees only the bright colours of his soldiers and the beautiful precision of their gestures.
He is a lucky boy to have such fine lead soldiers to enjoy.
Tommy catches his toe in the leg of the wash-stand, and jars the pitcher.
He snatches at it with his hands, but it is too late.
The pitcher falls, and as it goes, he sees the white water flow over its lip.
It slips between his fingers and crashes to the floor.
But it is not water which oozes to the door.
The stain is glutinous and dark, a spark from the firelight heads it to red.
In and out, between the fine, new soldiers, licking over the carpet, squirms the stream of blood, lapping at the little green platforms, and flapping itself against the painted uniforms.
The nodding mandarin moves his head slowly, forward and back.
The rose is broken, and where it fell is black blood.
The old mandarin leers under his purple umbrella, and nods -- forward and back, staring into the air with blue-green eyes.
Every time his head comes forward a rosebud pushes between his lips, rushes into full bloom, and drips to the ground with a splashing sound.
The pool of black blood grows and grows, with each dropped rose, and spreads out to join the stream from the wash-stand.
The beautiful army of lead soldiers steps boldly forward, but the little green platforms are covered in the rising stream of blood.
The nursery fire burns brightly and flings fan-bursts of stars up the chimney, as though a gala flamed a night of victorious wars.

Upon The Hill And Grove At Bill-borow

 To the Lord Fairfax.
See how the arched Earth does here Rise in a perfect Hemisphere! The stiffest Compass could not strike A line more circular and like; Nor softest Pensel draw a Brow.
So equal as this Hill does bow.
It seems as for a Model laid, And that the World by it was made.
Here learn ye Mountains more unjust, Which to abrupter greatness thrust, That do with your hook-shoulder'd height The Earth deform and Heaven frght.
For whose excrescence ill design'd, Nature must a new Center find, Learn here those humble steps to tread, Which to securer Glory lead.
See what a soft access and wide Lyes open to its grassy side; Nor with the rugged path deterrs The feet of breathless Travellers.
See then how courteous it ascends, And all the way ir rises bends; Nor for it self the height does gain, But only strives to raise the Plain.
Yet thus it all the field commands, And in unenvy'd Greatness stands, Discerning furthe then the Cliff Of Heaven-daring Teneriff.
How glad the weary Seamen hast When they salute it from the Mast! By Night the Northern Star their way Directs, and this no less by Day.
Upon its crest this Mountain grave A Plum of aged Trees does wave.
No hostile hand durst ere invade With impious Steel the sacred Shade.
For something alwaies did appear Of the Great Masters terrour there: And Men could hear his Armour still Ratling through all the Grove and Hill.
Fear of the Master, and respect Of the great Nymph did it protect; Vera the Nymph that him inspir'd, To whom he often here retir'd, And on these Okes ingrav'd her Name; Such Wounds alone these Woods became: But ere he well the Barks could part 'Twas writ already in their Heart.
For they ('tis credible) have sense, As we, of Love and Reverence, And underneath the Courser Rind The Genius of the house do bind.
Hence they successes seem to know, And in their Lord's advancement grow; But in no Memory were seen As under this so streight and green.
Yet now no further strive to shoot, Contented if they fix their Root.
Nor to the winds uncertain gust, Their prudent Heads too far intrust.
Onely sometimes a flutt'ring Breez Discourses with the breathing Trees; Which in their modest Whispers name Those Acts that swell'd the Cheek of Fame.
Much other Groves, say they, then these And other Hills him once did please.
Through Groves of Pikes he thunder'd then, And Mountains rais'd of dying Men.
For all the Civick Garlands due To him our Branches are but few.
Nor are our Trunks enow to bear The Trophees of one fertile Year.
'Tis true, the Trees nor ever spoke More certain Oracles in Oak.
But Peace (if you his favour prize) That Courage its own Praises flies.
Therefore to your obscurer Seats From his own Brightness he retreats: Nor he the Hills without the Groves, Nor Height but with Retirement loves.

Narva and Mored

 Recite the loves of Narva and Mored 
The priest of Chalma's triple idol said.
High from the ground the youthful warriors sprung, Loud on the concave shell the lances rung: In all the mystic mazes of the dance, The youths of Banny's burning sands advance, Whilst the soft virgin panting looks behind, And rides upon the pinions of the wind; Ascends the mountain's brow, and measures round The steepy cliffs of Chalma's sacred ground, Chalma, the god whose noisy thunders fly Thro' the dark covering of the midnight sky, Whose arm directs the close-embattled host, And sinks the labouring vessels on the coast; Chalma, whose excellence is known from far; From Lupa's rocky hill to Calabar.
The guardian god of Afric and the isles, Where nature in her strongest vigour smiles; Where the blue blossom of the forky thorn, Bends with the nectar of the op'ning morn: Where ginger's aromatic, matted root, Creep through the mead, and up the mountains shoot.
Three times the virgin, swimming on the breeze, Danc'd in the shadow of the mystic trees: When, like a dark cloud spreading to the view, The first-born sons of war and blood pursue; Swift as the elk they pour along the plain; Swift as the flying clouds distilling rain.
Swift as the boundings of the youthful row, They course around, and lengthen as they go.
Like the long chain of rocks, whose summits rise, Far in the sacred regions of the skies; Upon whose top the black'ning tempest lours, Whilst down its side the gushing torrent pours, Like the long cliffy mountains which extend From Lorbar's cave, to where the nations end, Which sink in darkness, thick'ning and obscure, Impenetrable, mystic, and impure; The flying terrors of the war advance, And round the sacred oak, repeat the dance.
Furious they twist around the gloomy trees, Like leaves in autumn, twirling with the breeze.
So when the splendor of the dying day Darts the red lustre of the watery way; Sudden beneath Toddida's whistling brink, The circling billows in wild eddies sink, Whirl furious round, and the loud bursting wave Sinks down to Chalma's sacerdotal cave, Explores the palaces on Zira's coast, Where howls the war-song of the chieftain's ghost; Where the artificer in realms below, Gilds the rich lance, or beautifies the bow; From the young palm tree spins the useful twine, Or makes the teeth of elephants divine.
Where the pale children of the feeble sun, In search of gold, thro' every climate run: From burning heat to freezing torments go, And live in all vicissitudes of woe.
Like the loud eddies of Toddida's sea, The warriors circle the mysterious tree: 'Till spent with exercise they spread around Upon the op'ning blossoms of the ground.
The priestess rising, sings the sacred tale, And the loud chorus echoes thro' the dale.
Priestess Far from the burning sands of Calabar; Far from the lustre of the morning star; Far from the pleasure of the holy morn; Far from the blessedness of Chalma's horn: Now rests the souls of Narva and Mored, Laid in the dust, and number'd with the dead.
Dear are their memories to us, and long, Long shall their attributes be known in song.
Their lives were transient as the meadow flow'r.
Ripen'd in ages, wither'd in an hour.
Chalma, reward them in his gloomy cave, And open all the prisons of the grave.
Bred to the service of the godhead's throne, And living but to serve his God alone, Narva was beauteous as the opening day When on the spangling waves the sunbeams play, When the mackaw, ascending to the sky, Views the bright splendour with a steady eye.
Tall, as the house of Chalma's dark retreat; Compact and firm, as Rhadal Ynca's fleet, Completely beauteous as a summer's sun, Was Narva, by his excellence undone.
Where the soft Togla creeps along the meads, Thro' scented Calamus and fragrant reeds; Where the sweet Zinsa spreads its matted bed Liv'd the still sweeter flower, the young Mored; Black was her face, as Togla's hidden cell; Soft as the moss where hissing adders dwell.
As to the sacred court she brought a fawn, The sportive tenant of the spicy lawn, She saw and loved! and Narva too forgot His sacred vestment and his mystic lot.
Long had the mutual sigh, the mutual tear, Burst from the breast and scorn'd confinement there.
Existence was a torment! O my breast! Can I find accents to unfold the rest! Lock'd in each others arms, from Hyga's cave, They plung'd relentless to a wat'ry grave; And falling murmured to the powers above, "Gods! take our lives, unless we live to love.

The Bird and the Arras

 By neer resemblance see that Bird betray'd
Who takes the well wrought Arras for a shade
There hopes to pearch and with a chearfull Tune
O're-passe the scortchings of the sultry Noon.
But soon repuls'd by the obdurate scean How swift she turns but turns alas in vain That piece a Grove, this shews an ambient sky Where immitated Fowl their pinnions ply Seeming to mount in flight and aiming still more high.
All she outstrip's and with a moments pride Their understation silent does deride Till the dash'd Cealing strikes her to the ground No intercepting shrub to break the fall is found Recovering breath the window next she gaines Nor fears a stop from the transparent Panes.
But we degresse and leaue th' imprison'd wretch Now sinking low now on a loftyer stretch Flutt'ring in endless cercles of dismay Till some kind hand directs the certain way Which through the casement an escape affoards And leads to ample space the only Heav'n of Birds.
