Ode To Silence

Live

 Live or die, but don't poison everything.

Well, death's been here for a long time -- it has a hell of a lot to do with hell and suspicion of the eye and the religious objects and how I mourned them when they were made obscene by my dwarf-heart's doodle.
The chief ingredient is mutilation.
And mud, day after day, mud like a ritual, and the baby on the platter, cooked but still human, cooked also with little maggots, sewn onto it maybe by somebody's mother, the damn *****! Even so, I kept right on going on, a sort of human statement, lugging myself as if I were a sawed-off body in the trunk, the steamer trunk.
This became perjury of the soul.
It became an outright lie and even though I dressed the body it was still naked, still killed.
It was caught in the first place at birth, like a fish.
But I play it, dressed it up, dressed it up like somebody's doll.
Is life something you play? And all the time wanting to get rid of it? And further, everyone yelling at you to shut up.
And no wonder! People don't like to be told that you're sick and then be forced to watch you come down with the hammer.
Today life opened inside me like an egg and there inside after considerable digging I found the answer.
What a bargain! There was the sun, her yolk moving feverishly, tumbling her prize -- and you realize she does this daily! I'd known she was a purifier but I hadn't thought she was solid, hadn't known she was an answer.
God! It's a dream, lovers sprouting in the yard like celery stalks and better, a husband straight as a redwood, two daughters, two sea urchings, picking roses off my hackles.
If I'm on fire they dance around it and cook marshmallows.
And if I'm ice they simply skate on me in little ballet costumes.
Here, all along, thinking I was a killer, anointing myself daily with my little poisons.
But no.
I'm an empress.
I wear an apron.
My typewriter writes.
It didn't break the way it warned.
Even crazy, I'm as nice as a chocolate bar.
Even with the witches' gymnastics they trust my incalculable city, my corruptible bed.
O dearest three, I make a soft reply.
The witch comes on and you paint her pink.
I come with kisses in my hood and the sun, the smart one, rolling in my arms.
So I say Live and turn my shadow three times round to feed our puppies as they come, the eight Dalmatians we didn't drown, despite the warnings: The abort! The destroy! Despite the pails of water that waited, to drown them, to pull them down like stones, they came, each one headfirst, blowing bubbles the color of cataract-blue and fumbling for the tiny ****.
Just last week, eight Dalmatians, 3/4 of a lb.
, lined up like cord wood each like a birch tree.
I promise to love more if they come, because in spite of cruelty and the stuffed railroad cars for the ovens, I am not what I expected.
Not an Eichmann.
The poison just didn't take.
So I won't hang around in my hospital shift, repeating The Black Mass and all of it.
I say Live, Live because of the sun, the dream, the excitable gift.

The Higher Unity

Isaiah Bunter has disappeared into the interior of the Solomon Islands, and it is feared that he may have been devoured by the natives, as there has been a considerable revival of religious customs among the Polynesians.

It was Isaiah Bunter Who sailed to the world's end, And spread religion in a way That he did not intend.
He gave, if not the gospel-feast, At least a ritual meal; And in a highly painful sense He was devoured with zeal.
And who are we (as Henson says) That we should close the door? And should not Evangelicals All jump at shedding Gore? And many a man will melt in man, Becoming one, not two, When smacks across the startled earth The Kiss of Kikuyu.

Captain Teach alias Black Beard

 Edward Teach was a native of Bristol, and sailed from that port
On board a privateer, in search of sport,
As one of the crew, during the French War in that station,
And for personal courage he soon gained his Captain's approbation.
'Twas in the spring of 1717, Captajn Harnigold and Teach sailed from Providence For the continent of America, and no further hence; And in their way captured a vessel laden with flour, Which they put on board their own vessels in the space of an hour.
They also seized two other vessels snd took some gallons of wine, Besides plunder to a considerable value, and most of it most costly design; And after that they made a prize of a large French Guinea-man, Then to act an independent part Teach now began.
But the news spread throughout America, far and near, And filled many of the inhabitants' hearts with fear; But Lieutenant Maynard with his sloops of war directly steered, And left James River on the 17th November in quest of Black Beard, And on the evening of the 21st came in sight of the pirate; And when Black Beard spied his sloops he felt elate.
When he saw the sloops sent to apprehend him, He didn't lose his courage, but fiendishly did grin; And told his men to cease from drinking and their tittle-tattle, Although he had only twenty men on board, and prepare for battle.
In case anything should happen to him during the engagement, One of his men asked him, who felt rather discontent, Whether his wife knew where he had buried his pelf, When he impiously replied that nobody knew but the devil and himself.
In the Morning Maynard weighed and sent his boat to sound, Which, coming near the pirate, unfortunately ran aground; But Maynard lightened his vessel of the ballast and water, Whilst from the pirates' ship small shot loudly did clatter.
But the pirates' small shot or slugs didn't Maynard appal, He told his men to take their cutlasses and be ready upon his call; And to conceal themselves every man below, While he would remain at the helm and face the foe.
Then Black Beard cried, "They're all knocked on the head," When he saw no hand upon deck he thought they were dead; Then Black Beard boarded Maynard'a sloop without dismay, But Maynard's men rushed upon deck, then began the deadly fray.
Then Black Beard and Maynard engaged sword in hand, And the pirate fought manfully and made a bold stand; And Maynard with twelve men, and Black Beard with fourteen, Made the most desperate and bloody conflict that ever was seen.
At last with shots and wounds the pirate fell down dead, Then from his body Maynard severed the pirate's head, And suspended it upon his bowsprit-end, And thanked God Who so mercifully did him defend.
Black Beard derived his name from his long black beard, Which terrified America more than any comet that had ever appeared; But, thanks be to God, in this age we need not be afeared, Of any such pirates as the inhuman Black Beard.

Daddy Warbucks

 In Memoriam

What's missing is the eyeballs
in each of us, but it doesn't matter
because you've got the bucks, the bucks, the bucks.
You let me touch them, fondle the green faces lick at their numbers and it lets you be my "Daddy!" "Daddy!" and though I fought all alone with molesters and crooks, I knew your money would save me, your courage, your "I've had considerable experience as a soldier.

fighting to win millions for myself, it's true.
But I did win," and me praying for "our men out there" just made it okay to be an orphan whose blood was no one's, whose curls were hung up on a wire machine and electrified, while you built and unbuilt intrigues called nations, and did in the bad ones, always, always, and always came at my perils, the black Christs of childhood, always came when my heart stood naked in the street and they threw apples at it or twelve-day-old-dead-fish.
"Daddy!" "Daddy," we all won that war, when you sang me the money songs Annie, Annie you sang and I knew you drove a pure gold car and put diamonds in you coke for the crunchy sound, the adorable sound and the moon too was in your portfolio, as well as the ocean with its sleepy dead.
And I was always brave, wasn't I? I never bled? I never saw a man expose himself.
No.
No.
I never saw a drunkard in his blubber.
I never let lightning go in one car and out the other.
And all the men out there were never to come.
Never, like a deluge, to swim over my breasts and lay their lamps in my insides.
No.
No.
Just me and my "Daddy" and his tempestuous bucks rolling in them like corn flakes and only the bad ones died.
But I died yesterday, "Daddy," I died, swallowing the Nazi-Jap animal and it won't get out it keeps knocking at my eyes, my big orphan eyes, kicking! Until eyeballs pop out and even my dog puts up his four feet and lets go of his military secret with his big red tongue flying up and down like yours should have as we board our velvet train.

George

 Who played with a Dangerous Toy, and suffered a Catastrophe of considerable Dimensions

When George's Grandmamma was told
That George had been as good as gold,
She promised in the afternoon
To buy him an Immense BALLOON.
And so she did; but when it came, It got into the candle flame, And being of a dangerous sort Exploded with a loud report! The lights went out! The windows broke! The room was filled with reeking smoke.
And in the darkness shrieks and yells Were mingled with electric bells, And falling masonry and groans, And crunching, as of broken bones, And dreadful shrieks, when, worst of all, The house itself began to fall! It tottered, shuddering to and fro, Then crashed into the street below- Which happened to be Savile Row.
When help arrived, among the dead Were Cousin Mary, Little Fred, The Footmen (both of them), the Groom, The man that cleaned the Billiard-Room, The Chaplain, and the Still-Room Maid.
And I am dreadfully afraid That Monsieur Champignon, the Chef, Will now be permanently deaf- And both his aides are much the same; While George, who was in part to blame, Received, you will regret to hear, A nasty lump behind the ear.
Moral: The moral is that little boys Should not be given dangerous toys.

HANS SACHS POETICAL MISSION

 [I feel considerable hesitation in venturing 
to offer this version of a poem which Carlyle describes to be 'a 
beautiful piece (a very Hans Sacks beatified, both in character 
and style), which we wish there was any possibility of translating.
' The reader will be aware that Hans Sachs was the celebrated Minstrel- Cobbler of Nuremberg, who Wrote 208 plays, 1700 comic tales, and between 4000 and 5000 lyric poems.
He flourished throughout almost the whole of the 16th century.
] EARLY within his workshop here, On Sundays stands our master dear; His dirty apron he puts away, And wears a cleanly doublet to-day; Lets wax'd thread, hammer, and pincers rest, And lays his awl within his chest; The seventh day he takes repose From many pulls and many blows.
Soon as the spring-sun meets his view, Repose begets him labour anew; He feels that he holds within his brain A little world, that broods there amain, And that begins to act and to live, Which he to others would gladly give.
He had a skilful eye and true, And was full kind and loving too.
For contemplation, clear and pure,-- For making all his own again, sure; He had a tongue that charm'd when 'twas heard, And graceful and light flow'd ev'ry word; Which made the Muses in him rejoice, The Master-singer of their choice.
And now a maiden enter'd there, With swelling breast, and body fair; With footing firm she took her place, And moved with stately, noble grace; She did not walk in wanton mood, Nor look around with glances lewd.

His spirit seem'd from earth to fly, He ne'er had turned away his eye, Did he not just behind him hear A rattle of bells approaching near.

Off the Turnpike

 Good ev'nin', Mis' Priest.
I jest stepped in to tell you Good-bye.
Yes, it's all over.
All my things is packed An' every last one o' them boxes Is on Bradley's team Bein' hauled over to th' depot.
No, I ain't goin' back agin.
I'm stoppin' over to French's fer to-night, And goin' down first train in th' mornin'.
Yes, it do seem kinder ***** Not to be goin' to see Cherry's Orchard no more, But Land Sakes! When a change's comin', Why, I al'ays say it can't come too quick.
Now, that's real kind o' you, Your doughnuts is always so tasty.
Yes, I'm goin' to Chicago, To my niece, She's married to a fine man, hardware business, An' doin' real well, she tells me.
Lizzie's be'n at me to go out ther for the longest while.
She ain't got no kith nor kin to Chicago, you know She's rented me a real nice little flat, Same house as hers, An' I'm goin' to try that city livin' folks say's so pleasant.
Oh, yes, he was real generous, Paid me a sight o' money fer the Orchard; I told him 'twouldn't yield nothin' but stones, But he ain't farmin' it.
Lor', no, Mis' Priest, He's jest took it to set and look at the view.
Mebbe he wouldn't be so stuck on the view Ef he'd seed it every mornin' and night for forty year Same's as I have.

But that eighteenth o' June changed ev'rythin'.
I was doin' most o' th' farmwork myself, With jest a hired boy, Clarence King, 'twas, Comin' in fer an hour or two.
Well, that eighteenth o' June I was goin' round, Lockin' up and seein' to things 'fore I went to bed.
I was jest steppin' out t' th' barn, Goin' round outside 'stead o' through the shed, 'Cause there was such a sight o' moonlight Somehow or another I thought 'twould be pretty outdoors.
I got settled for pretty things that night, I guess.
I ain't stuck on 'em no more.
Well, them laylock bushes side o' th' house Was real lovely.
Glitt'rin' and shakin' in the moonlight, An' the smell o' them rose right up An' most took my breath away.
The colour o' the spikes was all faded out, They never keep their colour when the moon's on 'em, But the smell fair 'toxicated me.
I was al'ays partial to a sweet scent, An' I went close up t' th' bushes So's to put my face right into a flower.
Mis' Priest, jest's I got breathin' in that laylock bloom I saw, layin' right at my feet, A man's hand! It was as white's the side o' th' house, And sparklin' like that lum'nous paint they put on gate-posts.
I screamed right out, I couldn't help it, An' I could hear my scream Goin' over an' over In that echo be'ind th' barn.
Hearin' it agin an' agin like that Scared me so, I dar'sn't scream any more.
I jest stood ther, And looked at that hand.
I thought the echo'd begin to hammer like my heart, But it didn't.
There was only th' wind, Sighin' through the laylock leaves, An' slappin' 'em up agin the house.
Well, I guess I looked at that hand Most ten minits, An' it never moved, Jest lay there white as white.
After a while I got to thinkin' that o' course 'Twas some drunken tramp over from Redfield.
That calmed me some, An' I commenced to think I'd better git him out From under them laylocks.
I planned to drag him in t' th' barn An' lock him in ther till Clarence come in th' mornin'.
I got so mad thinkin' o' that all-fired brazen tramp Asleep in my laylocks, I jest stooped down and grabbed th' hand and give it an awful pull.
Then I bumped right down settin' on the ground.
Mis' Priest, ther warn't no body come with the hand.
No, it ain't cold, it's jest that I can't abear thinkin' of it, Ev'n now.
I'll take a sip o' tea.

I'd ruther finish now I've begun.

I dropped the hand's ef it'd be'n red hot 'Stead o' ice cold.
Fer a minit or two I jest laid on that grass Pantin'.
Then I up and run to them laylocks An' pulled 'em every which way.
True es I'm settin' here, Mis' Priest, Ther warn't nothin' ther.
I peeked an' pryed all about 'em, But ther warn't no man ther Neither livin' nor dead.
But the hand was ther all right, Upside down, the way I'd dropped it, And glist'nin' fit to dazzle yer.
I don't know how I done it, An' I don't know why I done it, But I wanted to git that dret'ful hand out o' sight I got in t' th' barn, somehow, An' felt roun' till I got a spade.
I couldn't stop fer a lantern, Besides, the moonlight was bright enough in all conscience.
Then I scooped that awful thing up in th' spade.
I had a sight o' trouble doin' it.
It slid off, and tipped over, and I couldn't bear Ev'n to touch it with my foot to prop it, But I done it somehow.
Then I carried it off be'ind the barn, Clost to an old apple-tree Where you couldn't see from the house, An' I buried it, Good an' deep.
I don't rec'lect nothin' more o' that night.
Clarence woke me up in th' mornin', Hollerin' fer me to come down and set th' milk.
When he'd gone, I stole roun' to the apple-tree And seed the earth all new turned Where I left it in my hurry.
I did a heap o' gardenin' That mornin'.
I couldn't cut no big sods Fear Clarence would notice and ask me what I wanted 'em fer, So I got teeny bits o' turf here and ther, And no one couldn't tell ther'd be'n any diggin' When I got through.
They was awful days after that, Mis' Priest, I used ter go every mornin' and poke about them bushes, An' up and down the fence, Ter find the body that hand come off of.
But I couldn't never find nothin'.
I'd lay awake nights Hearin' them laylocks blowin' and whiskin'.
At last I had Clarence cut 'em down An' make a big bonfire of 'em.
I told him the smell made me sick, An' that warn't no lie, I can't abear the smell on 'em now; An' no wonder, es you say.
I fretted somethin' awful 'bout that hand I wondered, could it be Hiram's, But folks don't rob graveyards hereabouts.
Besides, Hiram's hands warn't that awful, starin' white.
I give up seein' people, I was afeared I'd say somethin'.
You know what folks thought o' me Better'n I do, I dessay, But mebbe now you'll see I couldn't do nothin' diff'rent.
But I stuck it out, I warn't goin' to be downed By no loose hand, no matter how it come ther But that ain't the worst, Mis' Priest, Not by a long ways.
Two year ago, Mr.
Densmore made me an offer for Cherry's Orchard.
Well, I'd got used to th' thought o' bein' sort o' blighted, An' I warn't scared no more.
Lived down my fear, I guess.
I'd kinder got used to th' thought o' that awful night, And I didn't mope much about it.
Only I never went out o' doors by moonlight; That stuck.
Well, when Mr.
Densmore's offer come, I started thinkin' 'bout the place An' all the things that had gone on ther.
Thinks I, I guess I'll go and see where I put the hand.
I was foolhardy with the long time that had gone by.
I know'd the place real well, Fer I'd put it right in between two o' the apple roots.
I don't know what possessed me, Mis' Priest, But I kinder wanted to know That the hand had been flesh and bone, anyway.
It had sorter bothered me, thinkin' I might ha' imagined it.
I took a mornin' when the sun was real pleasant and warm; I guessed I wouldn't jump for a few old bones.
But I did jump, somethin' wicked.
Ther warn't no bones! Ther warn't nothin'! Not ev'n the gold ring I'd minded bein' on the little finger.
I don't know ef ther ever was anythin'.
I've worried myself sick over it.
I be'n diggin' and diggin' day in and day out Till Clarence ketched me at it.
Oh, I know'd real well what you all thought, An' I ain't sayin' you're not right, But I ain't goin' to end in no county 'sylum If I c'n help it.
The shiv'rin' fits come on me sudden like.
I know 'em, don't you trouble.
I've fretted considerable about the 'sylum, I guess I be'n frettin' all the time I ain't be'n diggin'.
But anyhow I can't dig to Chicago, can I? Thank you, Mis' Priest, I'm better now.
I only dropped in in passin'.
I'll jest be steppin' along down to French's.
No, I won't be seein' nobody in the mornin', It's a pretty early start.

The Battle of Abu Klea

 Ye sons of Mars, come join with me,
And sing in praise of Sir Herbert Stewart's little army,
That made ten thousand Arabs flee
At the charge of the bayonet at Abu Klea.
General Stewart's force was about fifteen hundred all told, A brave little band, but, like lions bold, They fought under their brave and heroic commander, As gallant and as skilful as the great Alexander.
And the nation has every reason to be proud, And in praise of his little band we cannot speak too loud, Because that gallant fifteen hundred soon put to flight Ten thousand Arabs, which was a most beautiful sight.
The enemy kept up a harmless fire all night, And threw up works on General Stewart's right; Therefore he tried to draw the enemy on to attack, But they hesitated, and through fear drew back.
But General Stewart ordered his men forward in square, All of them on foot, ready to die and to dare; And he forced the enemy to engage in the fray, But in a short time they were glad to run away.
But not before they penetrated through the British square, Which was a critical moment to the British, I declare, Owing to the great number of the Arabs, Who rushed against their bayonets and received fearful stabs.
Then all was quiet again until after breakfast, And when the brave little band had finished their repast, Then the firing began from the heights on the right, From the breastworks they had constructed during the night; By eight o'clock the enemy was of considerable strength, With their banners waving beautifully and of great length, And creeping steadily up the grassy road direct to the wells, But the British soon checked their advance by shot and shells.
At ten o'clock brave General Stewart made a counter-attack, Resolved to turn the enemy on a diferent track; And he ordered his men to form a hollow square, Placing the Guards in the front, and teeing them to prepare.
And on the left was the Mounted Infantry, Which truly was a magnificent sight to see; Then the Sussex Regiment was on the right, And the Heavy Cavalry and Naval Brigade all ready to fight.
Then General Stewart took up a good position on a slope, Where he guessed the enemy could not with him cope, Where he knew the rebels must advance, All up hill and upon open ground, which was his only chance.
Then Captain Norton's battery planted shells amongst the densest mass, Determined with shot and shell the enemy to harass; Then carne the shock of the rebels against the British square, While the fiendish shouts of the Arabs did rend the air.
But the steadiness of the Guards, Marines, and Infantry prevailed, And for the loss of their brother officers they sadly bewailed, Who fell mortally wounded in the bloody fray, 'Which they will remember for many a long day.
For ten minutes a desperate struggle raged from left to rear While Gunner Smith saved Lieutenant guthrie's life without dread or fear; When all the other gunners had been borne back, He took up a handspike, and the Arabs he did whack.
The noble hero hard blows did strike, As he swung round his head the handspike; He seemed like a destroying angel in the midst of the fight The way he scattered the Arabs left and right.
Oh! it was an exciting and terrible sight, To see Colonel Burnaby engaged in the fight: With sword in hand, fighting with might and main, Until killed by a spear-thrust in the jugular vein.
A braver soldier ne'er fought on a battle-field, Death or glory was his motto, rather than yield; A man of noble stature and manly to behold, And an honour to his country be it told.
It was not long before every Arab in the square was killed.
And with a dense smoke and dust the air was filled; General Stewart's horse was shot, and he fell to the ground.
In the midst of shot and shell on every side around.
And when the victory was won they gave three British cheers.
While adown their cheeks flowed many tears For their fallen comrades that lay weltering in their gore; Then the square was re-formed, and the battle was o'er.
