What do you see

Looking at the portrait of myself
I try to decide the wall or shelf
And as I wonder which will be
Of what of me will people see

You cannot trust a portrait
For it is only a figure
And eyes ask the mirror
What others see and picture

You can't run from emotions
They are always there
They look for disapproval
And eyes that often stare

Beauty has its place
And vanity it’s pride
Hiding from rejection
Of what we may deny

The difference between
a portrait and a mirror
Though times it may not seem
The portrait is a pose, the mirror is a scene

A portrait is a time gone past
While the mirror is the thee
The portrait tells it memories
The mirror knows it leaves

Frozen in time not dead
But still alive
The mirror fears
The time that will arrive

The portrait has escaped
What silence deny
While the mirror reminds
Of sins near by

Who am I to judge
Things near by
When silence covers
The reason they cry

The portrait it holds
Secrets known above
While down on earth
A figure we love

Strangers know not the difference
So called friends know what occurred
Only God can tell the difference
When the eyes of many are blurred

The portrait has no pity
The mirror seeks love
The past has no memory
The present what comes from above

I like your use of metaphor, TS. A lot of wisdom in this fine poem, my friend. Plenty to think about once your poem has been read. I hope your 2024 is going well! A poet friend in Texas, Bill

Looking into the mirror makes me sick seeing how old I've become. Yet the memories remain. Deep poem.

This is brilliant and so well written about mirror and portrait. While a portrait has captured memories and moments, mirrors show the present and whats within you. A very deep and intriguing write. I love the flow of this too. Pleasure reading your work as always
