Country Setting

A stream, searching its limits, laps the bank.
Water falls gently over a small dam.
Fish nip at flotsam in usual prank,
And find protein at weight less than a gram.

All's well and calm in this country setting
A whiff of wind shuffles a nearby tree,
Yet the shallow banks soon will be letting
Gallons of overflow to be set free.

Soft water's whispers now shriek in a scream.
A precipice grips the liquid off-guard.
It spills its mass in a powerful stream
Down to twirling whirlpool's cold disregard.

Beautifully written! I love how the calm turns into power—reminds me that even gentle beginnings can grow into unstoppable strength.

Lovely country setting, dear Hilda. When I read this, I am reminded of my own native place in a country setting with a river flowing nearby and small fishes darting up and down nibbling at the floating weeds and algae.

Hilda, the scene you have crafted is outstanding. Revealing the toil of the earth's hand. A moment of marvel, artfully framed in nature's embrace. Cheers, friend! Have a great day.

Nature is never at fault, nor God. We choose where to live and play, bucking the odds. But no one is to blame -- life is a gamble from start to finish. The heart is a risk taker. Very thoughtful, deeply feeling poem. Well done.

Yes. It is written to show nature's incidentals. We always hear a lot about the big stuff. I'm glad it gave you thought

I like how the title sets the mood for calm then the poem evolves into the unsettling mood.

~~~~~ Thank you for your comment. I had put this poem aside for a while because I didn't think it had enough movement. I'm glad you understand its nostalgia.
