By the Good We Do

I imagined this world,
a better place.
Hunger and sadness,
removed every trace.
The wars had all stopped,
there was peace on Earth.
Joy accompanied,
every baby’s birth.

People all listened,
when wise men did speak.
Bold and the beautiful,
equal to the meek.
Status less important,
than being kind.
People not hurtful,
when they spoke their mind.

Strength was measured,
by the good we would do.
We shared with the needy
not the rich few.
Work was a pleasure,
no longer a grind.
By doing what we loved,
we nourished the mind.

We chose here and now
instead of the past.
Time was less fleeting,
pure moments would last
We enjoyed people,
wanted them to stay.
A time to relax,
adults learned to play.

From imagination,
gifts would be brought.
Sometimes if we tried,
we could change our thoughts.
Yes I began,
to be a better me.
No other people
were my enemy.

Force never worked,
It lead to more hate.
Prayerful contemplation
might change our fate.
I might be naive,
From a different place.
Where hate has been banished
from the Earth's face!

With what is happening in Israel and Gaza I thought this message might resonate.

Fine live and let live, help when you can and don't let pride rob you when you need help yourself ... ask for help if you need it, others want to help those in need. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us through your poetry, my friend. Bill

I went back a read a few older poems, Rick, this was one of my favorite poems I read and I'm FAVing it to my list. I agree with all you've imagined in this fine poem. I too have decided to be a better me. Act from a place of love and though human, still try to allow others to be themselves and I've given up on the feelings of having to be right about everything. There will always be differences of opinions. (To be continued)

Such a world was a world God wanted for us before Adam and eve ate the forbidden fruit. The devil robbed us.... This is great piece, Richard.. Regards...

We all long for such a world where peace dwells and joy abounds, where a man's strength is estimated by the good deeds he performs. But unfortunately we live in a world of hate and war where compassion and empathy are considered as weakness. I can feel the goodness of your heart! Very inspirational poem, dear friend.

I think there are many good people in the world. It gust seems the ones who offer hate are louder.

I believe society has lost its way. The art of debate has disappeared and people who shout loudest think that's the right way to get their messages across. Sadly, many who listen think that too, or so it seems to me. I dream of places and mindsets that your poem describes. Suffice to say I like your poem and those dreams. Nice work. Cheers - Gary

I like your comment and whole heartedly agree with your sentiments. People used to disagree without being disagreeable. The person disagreeing wasn’t the enemy. They were sharpening your intellect by providing an alternate perspective. Also debate was rooted in facts rather than feelings.
