Writers Conferences! Writers Conferences!

Blog Posted:2/24/2010 8:45:00 PM
I wanna know about Writers Conferences! It just struck me when emailing Deb (I call her Deb...totally without permission) that I should ask around about writers conferences... I've been to one, and it blew me away! Just this past fall I was able to get a great consultation to at least get my manuscript read, bu the whole weekend as a whole was like going to writers camp, and everyone seemed to leave more enlightened and tuned in with the business in general. It was an amazing experience, and would love to go again...the bonds you make IN PERSON with other writers seems much more harmonious then competitve...there was a deep sharing involved, versus any sort mental clutching of ideas. Anyway, wondering what yalls experience has been attending, and if you know of some great/not-so-great ones, or even if theres an annual thing in your area...or if you knew some old relative that once had a friend that went to one. just kidding bout that last one. Just GET BACK!

You call can me Deb, you can call me Debbie, you can call me Debbie Do (Most of life before divorce was Debbie do this and Debbie Do that LOL) I do have a pen name ;) It's Aleezabet (long e sound) folks who know me by that name and feel it's too long often call me Bet ;) (Because you bet you're never going to guess what I'm gonna do next! And or it's a gamble knowing me LOL) Soooooo you have my permission! Mattie M'Boyo

In my city, of Ottawa, Canada, we have a group called the Ottawa Storytellers, who meet on the first Thursday of each month, to share stories and poetry, and it is an amazing experience, to be with one's peers, to read your piece out loud and to hear others. Just an awesome, learning opportunity... so I know exactly what you mean... there are also, coffee houses, and pubs, in my city, with poetry reading evenings... so I guess, I am very lucky...

WE could do like poetry.com and have everyone be told they are the BEST poet and tell them to pay like a thousand dollars to come read their "award winning poem" for the conference. hahaha. just joking. Anything BUT a poetry.com type contest!

PS - The Bobby Ozuna's Readers Group focuses primarily on helping writers market their works.

In college we went to some writers' workshops and they were very enlightening. We enjoyed sharing and critiquing each other's works. Also went to some journalism workshops more recently, but not the type of conference you're describing. Haven't heard of any nearby. The Bobby Ozuna's Readers Group has on-air radio conferences for writers. The show is based in Texas and you'll find this group promoted on Facebook. I participated in one conference and enjoyed the interaction. You can participate from anywhere. I'll be checking this blog again to see if anyone knows of such conferences in my area. Hope you get the info you desire, Matt! Best Wishes, Carolyn

I know and have gone to a major writer's conference (with poetry overtones) in New York City.. they are the best ones.. I was invited 3 years in a row a few years ago as my poetry appeared in anthologies throughout the different States.. the process came from my entering all the contests open in Writer's Digest magazine and all the ones offered online, which u pay to enter your poetry, and that is how it began for me.. I have not participated recently but still get invited to attend ..very fancy smancy high profile elites ... that kinda gala... NYC is the only one I was invoved in because I live 30 minutes from The Big Apple.. there are others in Cleveland, Ohio too.. Matt.. so check out the writing magazines for more insight .. hope this info helps u..luv.."Sweetheart"
