To hunt or not to hunt......that is the question

Blog Posted:6/23/2010 3:45:00 PM
Hi Everyone!

I'm just curious about everyone's view on hunting! I grew up in a ranching community and hunting is a way of life. I have never in my life had to go to the store and buy meat, of any kind.  We hunted deer and elk and if the hunt was unsuccessful there was always a steer or pig to be butchered. I grew up around animals that were raised to be eaten so it doesn't bother me...When I went to college a lot of people thought I was insane because of my knowledge in processing meat. I have never had a problem with it before. I mean I'd much rather know that the beef I'm eating is clean and organic and not be afraid of what kinds of steroids and additives that have been put in it.  At least the beef and pigs we butchered were raised in a pen alone and didn't have to be crammed into a feed lot where there is barely enough room to stand.

I'm interested in your opinions...

What does anyone have to say on the matter...

All primitive people have had to hunt to live and it is a natural thing. I was raised on a farm. We ate chickens turkeys, pigs, cows as needed and thought nothing of it. Not one bit of the animal was wasted. How many of you wear shoes of leather? But will not eat meat? Is there a differene? I do believe that the big corporations should be forced to use humane methods in their methods of raising and killing food animals. And I don't believe in the hormones that they pour into them to make them bigger. I would love to have some of my dad's cured meat and would feel no guilt in eating it. However my stomach revolts at the chickens offered by the big coroprations. Joyce

it's funny our different views of necesities...we also here in the northwest, birdhunted ducks, geese, pheasants and prepared them for thanksgiving along with the usual turkey and ham...the huamn animal,is the only animal on earth which kills more than is needed....take the lion for instance,it will only take down what it needs for the moment...the native american's buffalo hunt was a needed resourece for the tribe, yet they understood the natural balance....it wasn't until the mass, useless slaughter of the buffalo's,mainly for just the tongue, that they knew then a great change was upon the land....

the humane treatment of animals is not possible in a capitalist economy based on shareholder profit....only by sustainable agrarian practices, like those followed by co-ops I know of in Wisconsin, can harmony be lived with nature....no to sport and fur hunting...just my thoughts...jimbo

I know what you mean, Paula, I'm not one for killing myself either. I have killed a couple deer and lots of rattle snakes but that's about it. I love animals myself but that never stopped me from cutting up and processing the meat my parents brought home!~Tirzah~

Yes Constance, like I said I grew up around hunting-All of my friends all wanted to come to my house for dinner cause we were always having steak or roast or some other delicious dish that their parents only bought on a rare occasion because it was too expensive!I never knew the difference, I always thought everyone ate like we did!~Tirzah~

I think, if you grow up, in this culture, it is easy for you and it's part of your life and it is done for food and there is nothing wrong with it. I don't think, I could kill any creature, myself, although, that is sort of being a hypocrite as I buy it at the grocery store. I tried being a vegetarian, but I was not getting enough protein, and was getting sick. Like Daniel said, killing for sport is hateful, and disgusting Recently in my city some moose were wandering in a park, and rather than trying to catch them and take them into the wilds, they shot them.. I was horrified as were many people, they were just young, perhaps lost... I know ...just another animal lover bleeding heart... oh well, thats me.. love constance

there is nothing wrong in hunting for food, hides etc. i hate people who hunt for fun though, fox hunting is the worst. sending hundreds of dogs after 1 fox and then ripping it to shreds disgusts me.

Iolanda-I know where you are coming from about aching for every animal that dies. In my culture we pray after we kill, thanking God that our aim was true and there was no suffering. We depend on animals for survival!~Tirzah~

It's still iolanda here :) For an awful example...I remember when the dictator of my native country started to feel he was losing his POWER he started hunting expeditions. The bears he was shooting were raised for years and years and when he was walking in the forest with his entourage these bears were released in front of him so he can kill them and show the people how POWERFUL he was. He was posing for newspapers with his foot on a pile of dead bears. NOT GOOD!!!

I grew up in a European capital but I visited my grandparents every Summer. Their tradition was to raise pigs, chickens, ducks and when time came my grandpa killed the pig and made lots and lots of goodies (sausages etc) in their own smoke house. That used to be a survival method of that certain generation (winters were very, very cold back there.)So, they were self supported and did not have to "swim" in snow to get to a store. As long as hunting is for food and not a stupid sport of killing just for the sake of showing who's tougher or smarter I agree with it although my heart aches for each and every creature who's hurt :(

My uncles were hunters. They had more respect for the environment than anyone else I knew. I don't believe any of them ever ate veal. Of course they ruled out lawyers and politicians when they hunted because the meat was poison. (just joking). Real hunters are friends of nature. God Bless. Vince

Hunting is the way early Americans were able to survive (and other cultures too). If you're going to eat what you hunt, fine. Just don't kill beautiful animals to put trophy heads over the fireplace. Native Americans had a way of making use of virtually all body parts of animals. Love, Carolyn

I agree whole heartedly, Andrea-trophy hunting makes me sick to my stomache! We have always used every part of whatever we are hunting, God never intended for his creatures to be hunted for their antlers or size and letting the meat go to waste for no reason!~Tirzah~

MOst people do not need to hunt because they just buy meat at the store. I think if a person TRULY intends to eat the meat, as you did, it is a good thing (and healthy). I don't like when people hunt for sport. Just kill and don't use the meat. It just does not feel right and I don't think it is what God intended. Andrea
