The Woman At The Well

by

I will be telling you this encounter in a different way; I'll be doing some paraphsing, and telling a version of the woman's life's story. I got to watch the chosen; the last episode of season 1 was about the woman at the well. I recommend if you haven't seen it, you should watch it. It’s a great show!

In John Chapter 5, Jesus encounters a woman at a well. This is not just any woman, this is a Samaratin woman. The Jewish people and the Samaratins used to be enemies, I'm not sure why I never really read up on the history. The only thing I do know is that each of them destroyed each other's temple. Jesus sits by Jacob's well, while his disciples are off to buy some food. The sun is out, it's a little hot, and it's around 6 o'clock in the afternoon. .

A woman of Samaria shows up to fill her jugs with some water. While Jesus is sitting there, He politely asks the woman to give him a drink of water. The woman says ,( I'm a paraphrasing not exactly using it word for word) "How you being a Jew ask of me a, Samaritan woman for a drink of water? Do you not know that Samaratins and Jews are not suppose to associate with one another?" Jesus says to the woman, ( Paraphrasing) " If you only knew who asked of you, to give a drink to, I would have given you a drink of living water that springs up to rivers of everlasting life. People who drink from this well (Jacob's welll) shall thirst again, but whosever drinks from my well shall never thirst again." The woman begins to say, (Paraphrasing) how did you get this water? Are you greater than our Father Jacob , who dug this well?" She then begins to believe, and then says, " Sir, give me a drink, of this living water."

Jesus then tells her, "Go call ( or go get) your husband. The woman then tells Jesus, "I have no husband." Jesus then tells her, " You say you have no husband, in that you have said truly." Jesus also tells her, " You have had 5 husbands, and the man that you are with now he is not your husband." The woman begins to say, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet." At the end of encounter with Jesus, the woman begins to tell the whole town of Samaria, " Come see about a man who knows me and everything that I've done in my life, is this not the Messiah?" And the whole town comes to know Jesus. This encounter proves that the old song is true, "Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right." However, we must have a little talk with Him everyday, we must come to His well and learn of Him everyday. That's what an realtionship is all about. Listening, communication, and self-sacrifice.

Back when I was in junior high people would tease each other, not really in a hurtful but in a playful way. Men had their thing; women had their thing. We all needed Jesus back then, as we still do today. Girls would tease each other, call each other a dog ( you know what word I actually mean, I'm just saying dog because I find it more appropriate) in a joking way, not to be hurtful mean or to bully and they understood this. They would call each other a dog, and would tell each other to quit being thirsty.

Now what does the word “thirsty” exactly mean.
If you would ask me what it meant 10 or 15 years ago I would tell you it meant, somebody wanted/needed a drink of water.

But apparently, there’s another definition. The word “thirsty" is really just a crude way of saying that someone is unsatisfied. That there is a void in their life somewhere that hasn’t been met yet.

One of my theories is, the woman at the well is a woman who is unsatisfied with the way that her life is or the way that her life is going. She’s been married 5 times, and yet none of those men could fulfill the void she that she had in her life.
She finally meets some guy, decides she isn’t going to marry anymore, but yet her life is still miserable. Not only that she gets labeled as every bad name in the book. She goes to the well at 6 o’clock in the afternoon , instead of 6 o ‘clock in the morning like everybody else because she doesn’t want to be seen by others. When she goes to the market to buy groceries, they refuse to sell them to her; they treat her like she’s some kind of “untouchable.”

Sometimes It’s easier to condemn or judge others, without first examining ourselves. I’m not saying that gives people the right to go and sin. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that all. What I am saying is though, No one fully knows this woman’s whole story, no one knows how she was treated by her last 5 husbands. I could tell the story of the woman at the well in many different ways, but only God knows the whole story.

People are looking to be loved, adored, and accepted. There's nothing wrong with having a spouse. children, family, and friends. Deep down though you know that there is something missing in your life something or someone that can give you what nobody else can and more. Have you ever felt like the loneliest person in the room before? You're surrounded by all kinds of people who love you; they not only tell you, but they also show it. What I am describing is a life without knowing who Jesus is. Drugs can’t fulfill that void, alcohol can’t fulfill that void, sex can’t fulfill that void, people can bring you joy and happiness, but nobody can ever love you like Jesus does.
