The Mask

The world has many secrets some we share and others we keep hidden tightly in a jar locked away in a vault. We all have a few but there is one secret, I know of and I choose to share it with you. It's a story about a woman who was deceived by her husband and her best friend sister. To some, this tale that I am about to tell may make you quiver to others you may ask the question 'why ', believe me that very woman had asked herself that question several times over and over, why? was it love, fear or just plain stupidity that caused her to remain.

What is love? Do any of us truly know what love is? I thought, I did. I have heard many say, that love is pure, it’s about giving and not receiving, its kind and loyal. I am sorry but I am here to debate. Love a word we use rather frequently and freely but the truth is does any of us truly know what love really is like Patrice this four-letter word baffles me.

Betrayal an arch enemy, a word we are all so familiar with, it was a hot day in the month of February when Patrice and her lover Stephan where sitting in the lounge area of their two-bed room flat. Stephan lay on the sofa asleep while Patrice sat at the dining table reading her Mills and Boom novel which she so regularly loved to do, as the day progressed neither Stephan nor Patrice knew of the horror that awaited them both.

It was around noon that day when a text was delivered to Stephan's phone it read, " I am 5 months pregnant". Patrice was startled and shocked by the text, she could not believe what the text had contained surely, she muttered to herself, ' this is a mistake, it can't be', someone had made a terrible mistake. She repeated, time and time again, pregnant ‘No it can't be’. Who would play such a trick, she asked herself, ’Who’.

After several seconds of soul searching and torment Patrice build up enough courage to ask Stephan about the text he had receive. Stephan still asleep on the sofa was awoken by a loud voice that echoed throughout the house. Patrice stood over Stephan as tears flooded her eyes and asked him as quietly and calmly as she could what’s the meaning of this text. Stephan, who is 5 months pregnant?

Stephan got up from the sofa and ran through the door, Patrice pursued Stephan and finally caught up to him gasping for breath Stephan bent his head and softly said,’ it’s your best friend sister’ she then walked away in total silence not a word was spoken between them both the betrayal felt like a two-edged sword. She was heartbroken and angry by what they both had done within seconds her marriage was now destroyed by lust, greed and great deception.

Stephan her husband was meant to be her friend, her lover, her companion and her protector. He was meant to keep her from harm but instead he became the weapon that pierced her heart and caused her wounds. 'He said that he loved her’; he said that he cared and he promised that he would never leave her.

His words were in vein and now consumed by lies; he broke her heart, deserted her, abandoned their children and left her for dead at least that’s what she thought. In her head, she kept replaying the event as she recalled his face looked pale, his body posture was lean and in his eyes, he looked lost as he lay across the sofa as though his life was taken from him. She remembered looking at him as though it was the last time she would see his broad body curled into a ball like a lost school boy caught in his own mischievous play.

Psalm 72 vs. 4: "He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy, he will crush the oppressor."
