The Freedom Challenge Mile

Bill faced painful fatigue making it an impossible mission to get any sleep. Like woodbine plants climbing throughout his mind the madness triggered a need to use his Ricoh electronic machine to find answers. Closure was the thirst as the evening darkest hours ticked away distancing themselves from the ghostly morning challenge.

“I ran a mile race, I know I did,” he said making his wife twitch in a humble way.

“You ran with grade 1 grammar school students virtually and the program was designed for three-year olds,” a voice came from the pillow pausing momentary, “and up.”

As the white light lantern did its job on a second’s notice Bill’s hands hit the keyboard putting in certain secret passwords to search cyberspace hungry to prove a fact.

“It was War of Will,” the local paper’s headline in a little box reported.

“Does it say you ran a mile dear?” The female’s voice raised its head from the sleep she was in enjoying a Presidential dream.

“There was a lot at stake honey,” Bill sounded a little disappointed, “this should have been a front-page feature.”

“Confirming you ran a mile,”

“Yes,” Bill exclaimed, “since I ran a mile freedom will stay free, this is the 21st Centuries march to the arch!”

“And who said our freedom would stay free? Bill,”

“Jefferson!”

“William,” once again there was a silent sound, “Jefferson?”

“No, Hillary it was Thomas,”

“Helen?” Hillary tried to clarify still being confused.

“No, Thomas Jefferson, he was attending the Starship Jubilee vacationing on the Galaxy Cinemas Cruise to Mars and sent me a memo that said, “If you run a mile you will be free, here I will show you.”

Feeling stronger that Hillary was finally listening to him he quickly turned the lamp on before opening the desk.

Inside the unorganized junk draw were napkins from TJ’s ‘the bar where someone declares independence,’ “See Hillary TJ a place where I declared my independence wrote, if you run a mile, I will be free.”

Now propped up his wife concluded time off was due and requested Bill to surf the Al Gore Information Highway for a rest stop.

“I can’t go right now,” Bill was being honest, “Richard Branson said his galactic flights are still a million miles away.”
