The Daily Walk

For the longest time, a lone individual who found inner peace walked a certain path every day. Knowing the markers throughout the daily trek secured the memory creating a mental map competitive with the GPS. Pass the bush then the Sycamore tree there was a lake where he always stopped to enjoy the placid surroundings and collect thoughts.

Nothing has changed through the decades that defined the independent spirit’s adult life. One time after taking this journey for health reasons a new neighbor emerged displaying attractive energy. After getting the surprising jolt the single unmarried woods person invited the guest for a snack. This afternoon delight led to a conversation about nothing concluding in making dinner reservations.

Following several enjoyable dining occasions, the outdoor adventurer allowed a home invasion and like the sunrise sunsets the scenery changed moment to moment. Chit chats produced positive verbal exchanges triggering resolutions leaving both comfortable when the discussions concluded.

One thing this lovable diplomatic shoulder to cry on did not accomplish was accompany the friendly companion in traveling the special trail. Not, in all the years spanning half a century was there a day when the two were spotted hand in hand relishing the setting.

As the sun glistened a voice from behind wearing a wind breaker performed the know-it-all power player conversation strategy resulting in interrupting the silent atmosphere, “I hear you were married for fifty years?”

“Yes, officer fifty years,”

Coming closer the FBI agent carefully approached, “fifty years is a long time, you do not look a day over fifty,”

“Well, officer,” an evil confession lurked, “I walk this path every day.”

“Are you sure you do it to stay healthy or?”

That is when flashing lights engulfed the postcard landscape sending a message ‘dead end straight ahead,’

“Or do you just make sure no one has found where you buried the body?”
