NAIVE MELLISA: HER PAINFUL UNEXPECTED END

Have fun reading, meanwhile you can check out my poems......

*****************************************

She stood at the beach taking everything in — the air and the seas. The sea smelled like well, sea. It was lovely! Absolutely breathtaking. Today was particularly a happy one for her. She started noticing things she wouldn’t or couldn’t notice before. For example how the sun cascaded with the sky forming a rainbow patch giving off both heat and cold simultaneously. She loved everything including this weather.

Enjoying the seas, in recent months hadn’t been her favourite thing to do. Infact she never knew how things could be so beautiful; she had been far too busy with her social life to care. But lately, a lot had changed. Even she had changed, she had learnt to smile more and even giggle at little things!

She spread her arms out wide and screamed at the top of her lungs “Whohooooo”! Seagulls were squawking and wailing in the distance. It all seemed surreal. She should do this more often, enjoy her life.

Her life had been stereotypical; live by the rules, die by the books. She had a great job as a nurse where all she sees around her is death, illness and poop. And even as a nurse, she had always hated the smell of disinfectants which obviously filled the hospital. Today, no taking orders from the doctors, no walking round the hospital like a white spirit with the doctor on ward rounds, no making sure patients get their injections on time or that the I.V fluid should is placed well. I mean she loved her job but she had become so tired of getting to see people die or leave the hospital and of course her life after treatment. People always get to walk out on her just like her mom who had died when she was a child and her dad who never gave a damn about her.

It had been only her and her foster parents. Those lovely pairs had taught her to believe once again in love and trust. She had a free-spirit, thanks to them. They had really pampered her and everything she did, she did for them.

But today, everything was about her and only her! What had prompted her to take the decision of not reporting for work today was love. Yes love, but (there’s a clause of course), he doesn’t know she loves him!

She had met him for the first time in the doctor’s office when the doctor had asked her to submit a patient’s file. His chestnut eyes had caught her off guard and she managed to have a glimpse of his smooth caramel skin that glowed inside his half-buttoned blue and white striped T-shirt. She found herself fondling with the files even as the doctor stretched to collect the file. Her hands were still on the files, with her gaze locked into his that she didn’t realize she still held on to the file the doctor was trying to collect. She cursed in her breath, apologized, smiled and simply walked away.

She had reason to believe after enquiring about him by people in the neighbourhood that he loved the beaches. She was also told he was always alone; no friends and no visitors. He never smiled and his face doesn’t frown either. She didn’t care! She would surely return those smiles- whatever had stolen them away she would replace. His name, as she found out was Tyler. She would call him Ty in her mind for short. Lovely name she thought.

Time seemed to be lost yet she hadn’t sighted him; maybe he had changed his mind. She would just wait a bit. What was she going to do when she saw him? Happiness and nervousness hadn’t make her think of this very important question. Well she was just gonna stare at him (from a distance of course)!

Lost in her train of thoughts, she didn’t notice a silhouette figure approach her. As it passed, the familiar perfume knocked her off her reverie. She turned to look as he passed her. He walked to the extreme end of the beach and sat down to stretch himself. After a while, he got up and started unbuttoning his shirt. It was dark now and the air hung heavy with the smell of sea meeting earth. She swallowed hard as he revealed his muscles and chest. Wow, he must really love the beaches, she thought. Maybe they offered him what the world could not offer, peace and quiet.

She didn’t know how long she had been watching but she didn’t care. Just then her phone vibrated; thank God she had set it to vibrate only if not he would known he was being watched and being super shy as she had heard, he wouldn’t have found it funny. She took her phone and saw it was her mom calling. The woman must be freaking out already as she never stayed out this late unless she was on duty and they knew she didn’t go to work because she told them she wanted to take a walk.

She checked the time, 9:05pm. She had spent hours here already without realizing how time had been far spent. She needs to go home now, else her parents would be worried-sick of her. She smiled and turned away towards the entrance of the beach.

She took her bicycle where she had parked it and cycled home, humming Avril Lavigne’s White Flag. She knocked at the door and a heavily built, stout woman appeared with worry written over her face.

“Where have you been?”, the woman asked.

“Well mom, I’ve had the nicest day ever. You know I’m beginning to think I should do this more often”, Melissa replied, grinning from ear to ear.

Her mother seen she was truly happy, smiled and hugged her. “You should have called or texted, you had me worried over your whereabouts”

“I’m sorry mom, it won’t repeat itself again”, oh boy! Was she sure she could keep to this promise? Maybe she’ll try.

She visited the beach again and this time she didn’t do the waiting. He was there already, naked as usual. Children cried and splashed in the waters, while some built sand castles. A lady and her group of friends where busy applying sunscreen; some guys were busy flirting with pretty girls. Some guys busied themselves with cleaning and getting their surfboards ready while others were riding with the waves. The sun was hot and the atmosphere smelled like uncertainty itself. Beads of sweat trickled down from her hat as she took it off to wipe it off the perspiration with two of her fingers.

She fixed her eyes on him, feeding it to her taste. His masculinity drives her mad. For an instant she wondered what it would be like when they had sex. She imagined been wrapped around around those big hands as he kissed her to stupor.

At sunset, he left the beach and she followed suit. She would be hard to recognize, thanks to her Colombia Sun-Ridge Hat. She needed to see him enter his house, it would give her much pleasure.

He crossed the road, she was still following making sure to keep him in sight and keep herself off sight. He took a turn to a very quiet and secluded street, she became afraid but felt dauntless. Suddenly, someone jumped her from behind “What the …..”, she couldn’t finish her words as her jumper held her mouth so she could not scream. She saw Ty turn around and in her mind she felt glad that he would be able to save her from this unknown jumper. She couldn’t still figure if the person was a male or female but judging from the strength with which the person held her head and mouth, it must be a man.

Ty approached smiling, she wondered if her situation felt funny then she suddenly grasped what was going on. He was behind this. Ty signaled to the jumper and she felt a sharp pain at the back of her head and she passed out.

Mrs. Wilde sat in the living room clutching the telephone in desperation. She had called all Melissa’s friends and none had seen her today. Mr. Wilde stood at the window making a call. He had called 911 and he was asked to wait for 24 hours, if she didn’t return they would take necessary actions. Mr. Wilde explained Lissa never stayed out this late that he fears something might have gone wrong. He checked his wristwatch as the responder tried explaining the policy again to him -11:59pm. This was strange, too strange of his Lissa. If the damn cops were not going to do something, he would. He grabbed his jacket and his wife asked him where he was going too, her eyes reddened with tears, obviously distraught, with her hair which was usually neatly done hair unusually hassled.

She explained she had called all her friends but none had seen her today. He replied “I need to look for my daughter by hook or by crook” “Our daughter”, Mrs. Wilde corrected.

He stomped out of the house, his calabash-like stomach wobbling as he walked out, worried. He got into his truck and fired the ignition but it wouldn’t bulge. He hit the steering continuously, cursed under his breath and kick-started it again, this time, it made a tumultuous sound as tires rolled in the sand and sped away like lightning. He visited her friends that he knew, they all had not seen her. He went to the road, with torchlight in his hand, he was waving a picture of Melissa with blue shorts and pink singlet to anybody who cared to listen to his questions.

Tired of asking and searching, he entered his truck and cried like a baby. He could not bear to lose her. She had brought nothing but joy to their lives, ever since the doctor had informed the couple they couldn’t risk having children as April’s taking in could cause her her life. Mr. Wilde felt April’s life was worth much more. That was when they decided to adopt.

They intended to adopt a little baby and were carrying out necessary documentations when they were asked to sit in the reception. Mrs. Wilde turned to find a little Angel staring at her like she wanted to say mother. She had signaled for the child to come and she walked into Mrs. Wilde’s arm, smiling. Her lovely eyes and innocent heart melted hers. She fell in love instantly with this Angel. When a social worker came to whisk her off Mrs. Wilde’s arms, she had refused to go and started crying. It was like this little Angel had chosen them and that was how Janet was brought home. Her name was later changed to Melissa after a beauty mermaid because she truly looked like one. The trio had become best friends that they felt she could never hide anything from them. How was he not to fight for her, she might be scared wherever she is and in need of her daddy. What if she is being killed or raped right now? This thought drove him insane as he started the truck and drove into the famous Nevara woods.

He came down from his truck and was shouting “Lissa! Lissa!”. He shone his torchlight here and there. He fell down to his knees and gave a loud shout. He broke down into tears once more. His phone rang. It was his wife; maybe Lissa was back. He hurriedly answered the call and cold hear his wife’s shrill voice on the phone “They called me. They have Lissa and they want a million dollars, no cops at 4:00 sharp tomorrow. Please do whatever you can I need my daughter alive, please”

“Calm down April, who called you?”, a scared Mr. Wilde enquired. “I don’t know, but it was a man, I want my daughter back, get the money and give it to them”, Mrs. Wilde replied, wondering why he was wasting time asking these questions.

“Ok, I’m coming home right now, Darling”.

She slowly awakened. Her neck hurt, everything hurts. She was blindfolded and could not see anything but her hands had been tied to the back of the chair she sat. “Who are you and why I’m I here?”, Melissa asked. No reply just static. She could perceive vegetation and mist. They were in the forest! Where in the forest she asked herself and why.

Someone opened the door of something and closed it after entering. They must be inside an enclosure in the forest, she calculated judging from the fact that she was not cold. She felt the person was looking at her, “Who is that? Where am I? Is that you Tyler?” The person removed the blindfold and truly it was Tyler. He was laughing like the devil himself. She quickly looked around and saw they were inside a wrecked plane, filled with so many rubbish -old tin cans, broken television, sticks, old blankets, torn pillows so many thing she couldn’t take note of.

“Well well well! Look what we have here! How has the hunter become the hunted? Yeah? Surprised? I know you’ve been following and I’ve planned all this for you”

If not that she was tied up and her fate unknown to her, she might have started having imaginations of kissing him. His voice sounded like soul music to her ears.

He clapped his hands three times like kind of a signal and two guys opened the door which have been replaced by an iron wide enough to serve as a door and entered the plane. They all had same lonely, neglected look, except the first guy was lanky and had tattooed every part of his body. The other looked more like a Tech guy; he was fat and was wearing glasses. By the look of it, he was the shyest of them all.

“This is ….. what’s your name again? Yes! Melissa”, Tyler was grinning from ear to ear. “Well, guys it’s time to have fun”. He indicated to the fat one to loose her. He advanced towards her and loosed the rope they had tied her with. With this Tyler and the lanky one dragged her to the floor and began undressing her. She was pleading and when her pleas fell on deaf ears, she struggled to get rid of them. This action only bought her a dirty slap and several punches from Tyler. She was screaming so loud that Tyler used a dirty rag to stuff her mouth. He held her hands and they took turns to rape her.

Mr. Wilde had only half a million which he had withdrawn from that of him and his wife’s account. They still had half a million to complete it. He was going to borrow from business partners; a lot of them were indebted to him. After making a few calls, he had all the money ready. They sat at home to wait for the kidnapper’s call as he had said he would. He checked his watch, obviously inpatient. His wife had cried her eyes out so that there were no more tears. The phone rang and Mrs. Wilde stood up quickly but her husband got to the phone first.

“The Abandoned Circus, Washington Way 4:00 on dot”, the telephone lines went dead. He looked at his watch 3:28pm, he had enough time to get there. He grabbed the briefcase lying on the floor and walked to the truck. He got there exactly 3:58. He alighted and shut the door after him with the briefcase clutched tightly between his hands. A skinny boy with a hood on and a mask approached him. “I’ve got your money but I need to see my daughter”

“You want to see you daughter alive, then drop the money and turn back slowly. No pranks, else your daughter will suffer severely”

Mr. Wilde turned slowly away as instructed and hoping to hear his daughter’s voice heard nothing except for the crows croaking. He turned and found both the case and the guy gone; no sign of Lissa.

The Sheriff Department placed missing person posters of Melissa. They had been asking questions and making investigations. It’s been three weeks and they hadn’t found Melissa.

After sweeping the whole county and the forest, Melissa was found. Dead and cold. Her body had been mutilated, her left breast chopped off. Her skin had been burnt by cigarettes and flammable liquid. Her vagina was enlarged, too enlarged maybe from being pierced over and over with maybe a wood or something obviously large. Her eyes had been plucked out and some of her fingernails were broken probably lost when trying to struggle with her kidnappers.

Melissa had been missing for three months and who’s to tell the horrors she had gone through. 90 days of suffering, agony, pain and hope; hope that her father would find her. Yes he did find her, but just stone cold dead.

After several investigations, they couldn’t match the DNA from the semen they had found to anybody’s but they did find a strand of hair in her fingers. Hopefully, this might lead them to the suspect.

The detective in charge of Melissa Wilde’s case knew there was more than one suspect judging from the injuries on her body.

The DNA matched one Larry Caldwell’s and after interrogations, it led to the other suspects. They were charged with murder and served time.

It been ten years now! These men are free men; free to oppress beautiful girls like Melissa again.

Yes our Melissa was blindfolded by obsession for just one man which led to her death but she really did love him, truly she did and they might have had lovely kids now. But he chose to walk down another path blinded too by hate for society and the world which he melted out to Melissa.

Melissa’s mother died of severe heart attack after hearing the devastating news. Her father is locked away in the care of psychiatric doctors.

Just a crazy Nigerian teen who dreams of writing.....
