My Diabetes

I was diagnosed in 2004 with diabetes type II and I said to myself, like everybody else: "Why me?”. The doctor told me to either follow a special dietary system or take pills regularly. I decided to try food management. However I was not sure how effective the outcome would be. Recalling the beginning of this new experience, the first thing I did was to buy a glucometer to check glucose while fasting and two hours after each meal.

I began educating myself on the disease. It is very important for patients to know about their disease and become doctors of their own. I also used to consult dieticians and nutritionists for advice on the best diet for diabetics, and browse the Internet for recent studies and research on appropriate food that suited my health condition. From my own experience, the best diet for diabetes type II is based on low glycemic food such as raw vegetables and berries for fruits. Adding a little cinnamon to fruits or olive oil to salads is very good. Small amount of almonds everyday could also help. Drinking water on daily basis is also helpful.

Following this diet on daily basis for 14 years, I am still without medication and my morning blood sugar went from 1.58 MG/DL in 2004 to 1.10 Mg/DL (Al Hamdou Lillah). I am much healthier and focus more on my work than before. I am certainly much happier with the new lessons learned: 1- If there is a strong will there is always a way. 2. Nothing is negative, learn from it and use it positively.

Thank you God for showing me, with diabetes, the way for a better life and better health. Everything from you is a Blessing.
