INTO OBLIVION

The rain had stopped, day was breaking, and on the branches of the leafless trees birds roosted motionless. Their little feathers bristling in the cold morning wind as I clear my throat pronouncing the beginning of my day.
What do I know if what this day may bring to me? I know nothing. Beyond a bare, weather-worn wall, about a hundred paces from the spot where I stood is a friend of mine with a phone in his hand. I studied his pulchritude without any notice from him. What do I know of this man? Well, that’s the stuffs I would like to put a veil.
The sparsely fogs that pitched through and soft cold blew of the morning breeze impetus me to lay in my bed back again. As I was leading my steps to my bed when my friend named Nail called me.
“Chloe, we need to go early to the school”, he exclaimed as he was holding now a bottle of water he get from the nearby water dispenser.
I paused for a moment and leaned my head to the voice’ fountain.
“All right then”. I simply replied. “No more extra sleep,” I added as I took my last morning yawn.
An hour had passed and now I barely hear an incoming footsteps whose rhythm had been recorded within my ears. I knew it’s him.
As the footsteps come closer to our closed door, I hurriedly open the door. This place, constructed in a singular and congested manner, still remains, and is inhabited by different students from different places bearing their own cultures. We are one of them who also aspire to earn a diploma in the wide platform of studying.
I took my bag and we hurriedly went our way to the school. When our first class was done, we made our way to the school’s oval where benches are occupied by some college students.

2
I always love the place. It always left an enthralling picture that refreshes me from the strenuous demand of school’s requirements.
We sat on the bench as we were getting our outlines to study for an incoming exam. At first, I was able to study but as a couple of minutes passed by, I found his voice annoying as its volume and speed increased.
“Pssst...Will you please minimize your voice?” I suggested as I quickly made my eyes back to my paper again.
The exquisite swaying of the grasses’ blades as the wind blow in the front of the bench summon me to sat on the ground and watch the tiny insects as it leap from one blade to another.
On the both sides of the field lie the busy hallways which were filled with many students bearing different stories that is coming to and fro.
I continue studying as I notice that he draw his self to the spot where I sat. He continued reading aloud and explaining the lesson to his self. It irritates me.
“I don’t know what is wrong with you”, I simply stated as I keep the tone of my voice in a lower level. I let go of a deep sigh.
He always teases me. Sometimes I thought the day will cry if he can’t make me mad. Well, I am accustomed I must say.
An evening broke as our last class ended. We were heading towards our boarding houses with some of our jester classmates who always love to play jokes.
This is the story that happens every single day. But one day, a slight change happen.
It was our last class in that day when the night embraces. We were wending our way home when I, Time, Fhan and him could be seen walking gaily under the dark aisle of the lined huge trees of the university. I was singing a song while Time and Fhan were chit-chatting with each other when Nail suddenly screamed “Snake!!!”
He threw a twig while he was extremely laughing on his prank.

3
I was frightened to the extent that I found myself catching breath like I was running for my life to be save. Immediately, the whole attention of them was caught by me. Fhan tried to call for a help while Time go with her as they were running towards the cafeteria to look for some water. Nail fanned me while massaging my fingers. I felt like I’m dying. I hated him for his irresponsible action. I know he knew that I got such condition.
The night were becoming older when we arrive at the boarding house.
He done that to me not only for once but a couple of times. I always told him not to do so for he might take my life away from me. He listened for a moment but forget it afterwards. Well, that’s him. The childish him.
One day, I was totally exhausted and mad when he teased me. He was trying to read the notes I wrote that were posted on my wall.
“Stop reading it”, I rebuke him with a lower tone of my voice.
“Look, she’s beautiful when she’s mad”, Time said as she was also laughing.
“Yes. You’re right”, he responded as he continue teasing me.
I felt like I’m going to burst like a volcanic explosion. I found a statistics book on my side and out from my anger, I threw the book to him while saying
“I hate you. You’ve been doing that all these times and I’m tired of adjusting and understanding you!”
Tears trickled down in my cheeks as I lie in my bed.
A silence broke the atmosphere and again I hated him for building up the monotony of my world.
An afternoon arrived and one exam is waiting to be knocked down. When I was checking my bag to get a ball pen, I found out that I have none. I phoned him as I was requesting to bring me a ball pen which I putted at my deck.
He arrived and just as I told him, he brought me my
pen.
“Ball pen? Have you bring it?” I asked. He lend me the pen without a word and I felt the sincerity of his humiliation towards me.

4
My conscience pricked me so hard leading to a sleep deprivation.
When the morning broke, I hurriedly prepared myself for my class. He never talk to me since then.
On the other night, I come to him to ask an apology.
“I’m sorry what I have done yesterday. I was just driven by my anger.” My voice was full of remorse.
“I don’t like to be scolded amidst a throng”, he stated without a sign of forgiveness.
The misunderstanding was unfixed and I let its mess pervades.
Since then, everything changes. No more him in my life. No more laughter’s, no more pranks but only pain.
One morning, our way crossed on the small aisle inside our boarding house. I was with Fhan and he ask her.
“Why so early for our class?” he asked while smiling.
“Nothing, we’re change. You know”, Fhan replied while continue walking. It happened that our eyes met and
he hurriedly go inside to his room. I stole a glance and leaded my way.
Days had passed by and still there is no sign of reconciliation. I felt a twinge anxiety on our prestige but I can’t help it through.
He had his own world now. I used to see him on the road all alone. I took pity on him for I saw no friends to cheer him up.
Our once colorful world were now fading into an endless dreary gray as a sad, empty eyes, forever weeping invisible tears for the warmth and life we had once known. Slowly, the world become silent.
I realized that the smallest thing can change your life. In a blink of an eye something happen by chance in the least expected. A single moment of misunderstanding is so poisonous, that it makes us forget the hundred lovable moments spent together within a minute.
One dreary afternoon, I sat on a couch as I stolidly gazed beyond a narrow, weed-grown pathway that wound its way into the fecund cornfield.

5
Sighing impatiently, I reminded myself that there are some reasons why we are here. Some things in this world are better left where they lie.
Should we let our friendship conform into oblivion’s countenance?
