Honey Bee

It was in the garden I became acquainted with ivy's gray, beady-eyed, cannibal lizard.
While raking a gravel path free of Eucalyptus leaves, I noticed a honey bee coming towards me
low to the ground encumbered with much nectar. Little bee followed the gravel path between ivy,
looking neither left nor right, thinking only of home.
Lizard was hidden under an ivy leaf waiting for little bee to come within range. At a
critical moment, he sprang from concealment catching Miss Bee in his mouth. I made my
presence known to the beady-eyed villain; he dropped Miss Bee staring up at me, giving little
bee time enough to escape ten yards away. Alas, she was grievously wounded, unable to leave
the path.
Lizard was torn with indecision; should he flee losing lunch, or pursue his pray? He went
for little bee. I was unable to prevent his reclaiming the victim; last I saw was loathsome lizard
dragging helpless bee into the sanctuary of his ivy patch.
I philosophized: the animal kingdom is cruel, ecology at work, et cetera, et cetera. I
finished raking the path and pushed on to other duties needing to be finished by noon for Fred
and several others would be waiting for me to check our watches against the big circular
company clock
